Love the selective ignorance part. I once heard that if we're in an ocean of knowledge, we shouldn't try and drink all the water, we should learn to swim across it. We don't need to know everything.

Yes and it is impossible to know everything. Plus, knowing a lot of things intellectualy isn't the best knowledge.. the best knowledge is known by experience (without science, beliefs, words, langage....), you can reach it by meditating, contemplating, krishna yoga or even DMT, ayahuasca, LSD or mushrooms...

This video came out in the perfect moment for me. After 1 year of lockdown, I’m addicted to reading news (I refresh news pages too many times to be healthy ) and social media drains my time with nothingness. Anyone else like me??

It’s been really helpful for me to break my screen habit by being intentional and setting boundaries. First, no multitasking. When I’m turning on the screen, it’s with focus and intent. It’s like shopping with a firm list vs just browsing the grocery store aimlessly. No scrolling while I’m talking to someone, no checking pings while I’m in a meeting, and no videos while I’m doing other work. When I’m using my phone (or iPad or PC), it’s for a specific purpose, even if that purpose is to watch KZbin recommendations for the next 30 minutes (and disable autoplay). These days, I’m asking myself “is this KZbin video how I want to spend the next 7 minutes of my life?” It’s a surprisingly potent question that helps me turn away and do something else. As for boundaries, I have no screens after 9 PM and no screens in the bedroom. I sleep so much better. A past benefit was that I’d get out of bed quickly in the morning because I was bored without my screens, but that has faded with my decreased addiction. Nowadays, I just find it interesting how constantly stressed my wife is with her phone and email dominating her attention when she’s going to bed, waking up in the middle of the night, or waking up and browsing before getting up. I know that didn’t work for me and it’s a reminder of the pain that my disciplined behavior helps me avoid.

Best advice of the decade (or two)! Our attention and will power are like iron filings and phones and social media are like 5 pound neodymium magnets. That pull is so strong especially if you have some other excuse to touch the phone like (as you said) using your phone as a watch. That is true for almost 90% of all people under 30 I know.

Thank you for this. My life is pretty chaotic or so it seems. The more I think about it, it’s just poor time management. I’ve recently started reading about stoicism, and journaling. I never knew there was this way of living or seeing the world. I am constantly glued to my phone or my TV for longer than I care to admit. As of today I’m deleting all games, FB, unnecessary notifications off my phone.

Curious. Just watched an episode of the Kung Fu 1972 TV series, and that idea was all over the place, both from the Taoist and Franciscan sides of the question. "The Chalice." But the Taoist version had been mentioned before in other episodes. There are many points of contact among Stoicism, Taoism, Christianity, Spinoza's God, and other views. Most curious.

I have DELETED all social media save KZbin as it’s my substitute for tv and movies and I use it for kindle . I can say without a lie that the only time I touch my phone is to answer a rare call and text play Spotify on my morning walks or to use as a watch ( I don’t own one). My battery lasts a day and a bit and I have no underlying angst about an argument I was having over nothing to someone I didn’t know in a unknown location of I don’t know where. My life and brain have opened up and amazingly my unnoticed stress levels have disappeared. I feel like I’m not missing anything and gained a significant portion of my brain and life back.

This is brilliant! Thank you for your great information and teachings. BUT…. the part here about being a little ignorant by choice is the thing I have found caused good, moral, religious people I know to ignore so many serious infringements to happen in our society that have resulted in us here in the U.S. to now live under a tyranny that we’ve never before experienced since our founding. MOST of my friends and acquaintances in my circle purposely ditch their devices, observe a strict sabbath, etc….and they also are completely CLUELESS to the extremely threatening and dangerous laws, senate bills, overreach etc that have been quietly creeping in here in CA that now has created a place where the sovereignty of the INDIVIDUAL FAMILY to be seriously threatened. They CHOOSE to cover their eyes in order to “have peace”: We’ve lost many rights as parents because good, Christian/Jewish/ Muslim etc parents chose to take soooo much time avoiding the “stress” of daily news and the world. I’m just saying way more of a balance than you suggest here is VITAL to us not continuing to allow more of our freedoms being taken away from us while we take our leisure time. More people are actually living like you suggest, than you think. And too much of that has led to those who are in charge to quietly take away so many precious freedoms and morality we used to have.

Yeah that’s what I was wondering too, I don’t think we can say the concept of stoicism escapes the idea of slavery, but it’s a far better slavemaster than average things we can find ourselves enslaved to. The catch with thinking like that though is it doesn’t give that same motivation to escape the things you’re enslaved to. It’s much more rewarding to say I’m going to get freedom than to rather say I’m going to get a better slave master
