I’m very much enjoying this series, and looking forward to seeing how it evolves. I read somewhere that by layering dramatic colors and marks beneath your finished layers, the finished pieces will have “history.” I wish I could remember who to credit with that description, but it helped me understand why the initial layers are so important. Your videos are illustrating that very idea, as well. Thank you for sharing your process!
@jclosestudio Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Kate! Yes, building layers is such a great way to create depth. Also makes the process really interesting because the painting constantly keeps changing and evolving.

Where you used the "transfer" paper at 8:13, you wrecked your painting. It seemed like you were punking yourself, especially with the smudged finale. Overall though, I can appreciate your courage and it inspires me to run fearlessly to my drafting table. You're a sweetheart and worth watching.
@jclosestudio5 ай бұрын
Haha, wrecking my paintings is very much part of the process. It helps to add interest within layers and gives me something to respond to in the next step.

Thanks so much, Susan! I use Jackson's own brand painting panels: tidd.ly/3YPx3Mq You could also use plywood from the hardware store and get it cut to size. To prep the panels I paint gloss medium on all sides and then apply two coats of gesso to the side I'll be painting on. I’m an artist and paint realistic art. I love abstract art and tried to paint abstract but I never like the way it comes out. I always feel like it looks like something a little kid did when I paint something. Any suggestions ?
@jclosestudio6 ай бұрын
Tricky! It's not necessarily a bad thing if it looks like a little kid did it😉 But I get your point! To make an "aesthetically pleasing" abstract painting the most important thing to get right is the composition in my opinion. Take a look at your dark and light values. What shapes do they create? Do you have a good range of sizes in shapes? Is the composition balanced?
