You know those KZbin videos with the annoying titles like “This One EPIC Painting Hack Will Totally Change Your Life and Make Your Art Into Instant MASTERPIECES”? This video is the type of real, practical, mind-blowing wisdom those videos wish they could deliver. This technique should be printed on every paint bottle like the Toll House cookie recipe is printed on bags of chocolate chips. What I’m trying to say is…THANK YOU for saving your viewers from litres of wasted paint!

Hello Jennine, l didnt know about the mother colour until a few weeks back while at a weekend workshop where this was explained. I've been painting for years and it's such a useful tip. I do like your explanation of it, you make it very clear. Thanks again......Alioban ❤

I have been watching your videos for a while & never guessed that you had taken CVP. I took Nicks SPARK course this year which was fabulous… I think one has to ignore the American way of talking … when sentences don’t always finish, the repetition of ‘you know’ ‘ kind of ‘ & everything is super / beautiful. Nick is a very charming host …..

How did you set up your wall mount columns to hold the canvases?
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio Күн бұрын
Hi Lynette! For my painting wall I’ve screwed IKEA Ivar corner posts into the wall. I’ve painted the posts white to make them blend into the wall better. Into the holes I add metal bolts from the hardware store. I can move the bolts around, which means I can hang my paintings an any height and move them around easily.

@jclosestudio thank you so much! I've seen it done with wood and dowels too. I really appreciate you sharing. We are so similar in our intuitive style. Love watching. Maybe I'll be brave enough to share once my studio is done. 👏🏼 beautiful work you have 🩷

I want to know about abstract work. I just learned about neutral colors and I don't know how to add vibrant colors into my field of view.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio Күн бұрын
Hi Troy! There is a lot that makes a good abstract work. I think most important is a good composition. And that it makes you feel something. But it's all very subjective. Might have to make a video on that! Colours very much depend on the colours they are next to. A fairly muted colour will look more vibrant next to an even more muted colour. And if you have only vibrant colours in a painting they lose their intensity without a muted colour next to them. So to show off vibrant colours, place a muted colour next to them.

I started with Golden heavy body but switched to liquitex soft body. I still use my golden paints at times but I prefer the consistency of the soft body paints. I also like that they a bit more matte.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio 2 күн бұрын
I love Golden too. I found the sheen of the Golden paints depends a lot on the pigment. Some are very shiny, some quite matte. The Liquitex seems more consistent.

Hi Jeannine, I'm enjoying this series so much! Apologies if you have answered this question elsewhere, but I'm curious to know what type of wood panels you're using here? Are there differences between cheaper panels found in basic art shops vs others?
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio 2 күн бұрын
Thanks so much KT! I use Jackson's own brand painting panels: tidd.ly/3YPx3Mq They are MDF with a veneer. Even better would be plywood. You can buy plywood from the hardware store and get it cut to size. I recommend 5mm for small sizes. To prep the panels I paint gloss medium on all sides and then apply two coats of gesso to the side I'll be painting on. Hope this helps!

Jeannine, you didn’t use one here but occasionally I see you with these small palettes with plastic (I think) lids that you use to mix up a color and then save. I can’t find them anywhere. Currently I’m using small mason jars with lids but they can get gummed up with paint, etc.

Hi Mark! Those are the standard containers our takeaway food comes in here in the UK, so I reuse those. I bet you can find them online though wherever you live. Here is a link as an example: amzn.to/3APSF1t

I love that this is a review, but make it artsy! It still very much feels like you and allows us to see how YOU would use the paints in real life! I’ve only used Liquitex basics and their inks so I’m intrigued! 🤔

I love your paintings, and these on paper are quite beautiful. While I enjoy Liquitex soft body, the nozzles get clogged very quickly. So you will want to keep a toothpick or pin handy. And when they run low, you will need to pop the top off and just dip into the paint. For those reasons, I prefer tubes myself. I feel like when I use heavy body, I can easily enough add a medium or glazing liquid to make the paints looser (like a soft body consistency). But that is just my preference. Also, next you might want to try Liquitex acrylic gouache! I had never heard of acrylic gouache until a couple of years ago. It's in the same types of containers as the soft body paints, but because they are gouaches they are completely opaque. Even the quinacridone magenta, which you would expect to be transparent. There is a beautiful shade called Light Blue Permanent which I think would look lovely with your warm, muted red browns and the sort of Naples yellowy-yellow that you often use.
@jclosestudio
@jclosestudio 4 күн бұрын
Hi Kathleen! Thanks so much 😊 Squeezing the tubes once there isn't much left is a very good point. I have the same problem with my larger System 3 tubs. I usually add some fluid medium when they are basically empty and shake to get most of the paint out. I have used Turner gouache before, which is also acrylic, but never the Liquitex. Need to look into that Light Blue Permanent, thanks for the tip!
