As someone who's family is in the Azores (Pico specifically) and is moving there from Canada...it drives me crazy when tourists litter on our Island. No.1 annoyance for me because its malicious and demonstrates lack of respect. If you do this stay off our Islands.

Dear Jeff, First of all I want to thank you and your team for your amazing videos and for sharing them with us. My wife and I were last on Maderia 18 years ago as part of our honeymoon and will be visiting this beautiful island again next week for 14 days. I used your videos and your passion to get inspiration on what to do, where to eat and what to watch out for. Of course, it's bad when tourists are careless and pollute the environment. Unfortunately, this is not only the case in Madeira. But speaking of the environment, you are often looking for new ideas for vlogs in your videos. One thing was missing from my point of view so far: Scuba diving. My wife and I got our diving license from Manta Diving Center in Canico de Baixo 18 years ago. This has fundamentally changed our lives, because it has brought us to beautiful places like Madeira and met great and interesting people. Diving is more than just sticking your head under water 😉 . I would love to see this topic in one of your next vlogs. Maybe you like the idea too. Greetings from Germany Mario

Hey Mario! Thank you for the kind words and super happy we could inspire you :)) I’ve actually been wanting to do a lot of scuba related stuff on the vlog yes. I’ve only ever dived once and loved it, so I do want to actually take the course and dive some more and of course document the experience for the vlog :) alông with some other ideas as well of course :)) so hopefully sometime in the near future yes!! Maybe it can be as much of a life changing experience for me as it was for you ;) thanx again for the thoughtful comment and hope to see you in one of our Land Rovers next time ;) cheers buddy! ✌️

I agree with what you say about some tourists not respecting the island. I’ve visited Madeira twice now and am going for the third time really soon. So far I have been 13 times on Madeira island and it was always a pleasure driving. More relaxed driving, yes even the steep hills or in the fog, because Madeirans really know how to drive and paying attention to other drivers. Madeirans also communicate (short honk) to say thank you when they appreciate it when you are being polite. It always takes me more time to adapt to belgian drivers when I"m back home. Oh and what really annoys me is that tourists always using their brakes instead of engine braking to slow down (shift down one or two gears).

And please, where is this road so that we will never have to be on it? :D All the best to you Jeff.

Ahah this road is in Ponta do Sol. My general advice is that if it looks super duper scary, don’t do it. Especially in the rain. Try and “follow the road signs” instead of Google maps. You find lots of lost tourists in places the shouldn’t be because of Google directions. Try do it more “old school” style, observe the map and look for main roads, highways, etc… The rest, use your instinct, be polite and remember some people are off to work, dropping off the kids, etc… Try not to be “in the way” during peak traffic etc, anyway yeah I hope that helps??

Talk about thieves!!! Well if you get in the pissed off mood again...maybe you should do a short piece on what to look out for from certain rip off agencies feeding on tourist. I'm sure if you compare 1 weeks touring car rental costs (and all the rental hidden shit, dissatisfaction, agravation and driving up and down roads which ever way, never traveled before) with 1 week of HTR's touring adventures, visitors may be better informed and surprised at value for thier money? Hey, maybe this could be a service that you could to offer??? The streets in both Azores and Madeira are notoriously small, however, the roads were not built or meant for modern cars. Tourists need to recognize that these are islands that were colonized in the early 1400's and it's roads were made to accommodate horses and wagons on cliff sides. Of course you will not have a futebol field! If you are scared to drive on the streets, take public transportation or catch a taxi. There are so many transportation options in Madeira specifically for tourists. If a tourist still has a problem with the roads, a simple solution would be to just not visit the island. If you cannot appreciate the island as it is, you should not go at all. And if you think that road is bad, try driving in Flores, Azores.

I'm not sure why it pisses you off in the the first part of this video. Ok, "most dangerous road" (and their reactions) could be a bit exaggerating. Is it a one way road? Those tourists are driving slow and nothing bad happened. Maybe the road signs are outdated if it's a one way road? It's just not a safe road. Nothing wrong with that, Just have a few extra signs next to the road. Cash = king? Cash = also outdated. Keeping some cash is good tip, but not someting to be pissed about, I would say. I my country there are many places you can't do anything with cash; only with your card. (it's easier, more safe, digital reciept, etc.) Littering: No one should do that (anywhere)! Good point!
@Hittheroadmadeira2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sven! What irritated me was the fact that it was advertised as “dangerous” but only if you don’t know how to handle it, yes, they handled it ok, but it’s not exactly encouraging and it brings a negative image of what driving is like in Madeira. I’m just standing up for our island and her people that’s all ;) Cash is still very big here mate, I know even myself, I’m not a big fan of using cash, but I always have some on me because in Madeira, at the moment, you will need it at some point. Thanks for the thoughtful comments and I hope you stick around !! Good things coming :) Have a great week.

This was hard to watch. I couldn't finish it. So much ranting I couldn't hear the message. So rude about that old couple driving o the road. How are you supposed to know which roads are dangerous in advance. It's not like google map tells you. It would be nice to have useful non judgemental advice.
@Hittheroadmadeira Жыл бұрын
Not being judgemental Mei Mei, the only way to know is to see with your own eyes. This road in particular looks scary already in the beginning, that’s why I say, “if it looks scary, stay away” Try stick to the main roads and if you’re really not sure, take a taxi or have someone drive you. Of course google will always redirect you if you choose to skip the scary roads ;) hope that helps!
@flopunkt36657 ай бұрын
I think Google Maps prefers the main roads. It's other apps like Waze, Via Michelin, Apple Maps or a car navigation that might choose some tiny steep roads.

Preventing these shitty roads is quite simple, once you get to them, you’ll notice “ah, this is one of those shitty roads” then you can have a choice to either take my advice and carry on the safer path, let google re-route you, or you can blindly drive ahead putting yourself in the same situation this guy did. I’m in Madeira right now and I can honestly say I don’t care what pisses Madeirans off. They’re all rude and arrogant. I’ve met two people since I landed that haven’t been total d*cks about anything and everything. My advice for a visit to Madeira would be: Don’t leave Funchal. Anyone not involved in the tourism trade will treat you, at best, like you don’t exist and at worst like a massive inconvenience no matter how polite you are and how much effort you put into trying to speak in their mother tongue for THEIR convenience. It’s a genuinely beautiful island, and for the record I’m over-polite if anything, but this trip has been marred by the locals. I will not be back and based on the reception I’ve had so far, both the locals and I will be delighted with that. Never had an issue like this on multiple trips to countries around the world. It’s genuinely got me baffled. Super hostile place.
@Hittheroadmadeira Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your bad experience Ben, wouldn’t know what to say, I’ve not experienced such. I communicate with locals daily, tourist-related or not, and very rarely get hostile vibes. Don’t give up on us just yet my friend 🙏 all the best
@ohsouthlondon Жыл бұрын
@@Hittheroadmadeira It’s a real shame because the island is extremely beautiful and absolutely worth exploring. I try to visit non-tourist areas in any given country as I’ve found that with the proper respectful approach you can experience genuine culture unaffected by tourist trade. I didn’t have to go far (Meu Super in the North of Arco de Calheta) before myself and my Mrs were called gringo and gringa by an unhappy store man, who then proceeded to make jokes in a mix of Spanish and Portuguese with other locals in the queue. My crime was apparently my presence as I’m travelled enough to be quietly friendly - I don’t make noise or mess in peoples place of work, I always give way to people in narrow aisles. I had my items and was queuing to pay 🤷♂️ The experience was almost universal across the island. There were absolutely exceptions to the rule, several people were very friendly across the weeks that I was there but generally the place didn’t live up to its claimed hospitality. People were dismissive and rude, often grunting or failing to respond at all. My Mrs ventured out by herself one time only to be met with a literal chorus of invitations to perform various acts on blokes outside a bloody Pingo Doce! She doesn’t even get that in London 😂 Beautiful island but nothing that can’t be found in South America where the locals actually will receive you with kindness and warmth when approached respectfully.

@@Hittheroadmadeira Even the guy from Madpoint cars was like “here’s your car, you owe me extra for your flight being late, you’ve got ten minutes to leave the car park or you have to pay more, good luck”. Another shame because Madpoint were really well priced, the car was outstanding and the contract was really setup to deliver a stress free transaction. For the record, I highly recommend them, just don’t expect any customer service!

@@ohsouthlondon May I ask which month you went there? I went there for an entire week early October last year and people were nothing but friendly and helpful. The only exception was one old lady in Funchal when I asked about the right bus stop to the airport. She yelled at me in Spanish "Sabe leer?" 🤣
@ohsouthlondon7 ай бұрын
@@flopunkt3665 I went in April. Admittedly I went as far from the tourist areas as possible. I’ve travelled extensively and I’m no wallflower so I’m not playing ‘Karen’. My Mrs felt very unsafe going anywhere alone and did so only once during which she was accosted by several individual groups of men. I’m overly polite if anything, and all too aware that the locals are living their daily lives, as opposed to me swanning around on holiday, but even I found myself getting pretty annoyed with attitudes in the main. For example we were trying to work out whether we could park by a supermarket one day and the locals outside a nearby cafe were literally shouting at my Mrs, whilst the cafe owner was telling us it was fine. Only the fact that I had my now upset kids in tow stopped a few of them from being invited for a more in-depth discussion. As with everything, there is a balance and a few locals were very pleasant to deal with but emphasis on ‘few’. Perhaps it’s my appearance, I’m 6’6, big build and tattooed so maybe there’s some bleed over from the whole macho South American culture. With that said, Madeira is a truly stunning island and my experience doesn’t appear to be universal so I would highly recommend it to anyone considering visiting. The infrastructure is great, most of the island is highly accessible and it’s quite unlike any other place in Europe.

I don't understand the local traffic system. Is there any road sign showing the direction you are going ? If the road is not accessable, should there be any sign asking you not to enter ? I am so sorry that you are pissed but tourists are not familiar with the environment, may not realize the road system there.

Hey Cathy! The drama was all for clickbait 😂 in all seriousness, I was trying to give some value and help people be a bit smarter on the island.
