I hope everyone is staying safe out there. I stayed up super late putting this together last night because I can see a lot of people are having a difficult time coping with recent changes to our industry. I’m confident that these changes are temporary, and if you can weather this storm and take this time to better yourself, when all these gigs come roaring back, you’ll be in a much better position.

I’d already made the decision to take the time to learn new stuff to further extend my skill set. In my case I’m going to learn Arduino programming as there are many great cheap kits and online programming resources. I’ve found the key to actually leaning is to set yourself ( better still have someone else set it) a task , so that way there is a distinct goal. Just fiddling with a console doesn’t mean you can operate program it in a real world situation

Really solid advice all round. I run a small rental house in the UK and we've just had half our upcoming work cancel in the space of 48 hours. Going to use the time to train up our crew, maintain equipment and dive into some R&D. We are opening our doors to local freelancers who want to drop in and use this time to get hands on experience with gear and I know a lot of other companies are doing the same, I would urge people to get in contact with local suppliers and see what opportunities there are.

WOW, you couldn't make this video at a better time. my gig this weekend got nixed and schedule moving forward is very shaky. When I was notified, I immediately setup my FOH in my living room and began to program and experiment with this new found free time. I always try to use my free time to learn new tricks and program new effects for my show.

All very helpful advice, thanks for looking out for us! I'd recommend Resolume and Blender, both powerful software with easy learning curves. There's also something incredibly calming about your voice haha much needed in these difficult times. Looking forward to more content!

This is my story... I'm British, and was in Dubai when this all started to go down. I had 4 gigs lined up out there, back to back, and they all vanished pretty much overnight. The furthest I got was turning up to a load in for a corporate event, and it was cancelled before we even opened the first truck. About weak later, the company I was working for came to me and said straight up that they need to end our contract immediately. I am friends with the MD of the company, so I was very flexible with them, unlike most of the guys, I didn't demand a 50% cancellation fee, and only asked for my day rate for the 2 weeks that I had already been out there. They said they'd have a new PO sent and signed on Sunday last week. They flew me back, and now they're ghosting my emails. I don't want to mention names, but they are one of the biggest lighting companies on the planet. I heard from a friend who's an employee at the company, that the Dubai office has laid off 30+ employees as of yesterday. This is hitting the event and entertainment industry really hard. My next gig is in May...

In the LED video world, I would recommend diving into ROE Evision, Novastar, and Brompton if you work for a video company/freelance as a LED video tech and are still a bit hairy with these processors. Take a processor home and a panel that works with it and try to learn where every menu option is. You never know when you'll need to troubleshoot a screen and know where one specific menu option is in order to fix some odd visual glitches, or how to reload the calibration coefficients for a panel.

It's unfortunate because we come from a world that is accustomed to exact dates, times, scheduling, etc. Having no set, or even estimated return date is what is so new to everyone. I totally agree though. Learn, study, make new contacts. The chaos will return. we know it. 🤙

Not huge crowds, local regulars mostly and although we are cautious, we feel better mentally being out with each other and singing and talking.. We were supposed to have the Juno's tomorrow but thankfully they cancelled it.. And The only reason I say that it would bring people from all over Canada here.. And so far we are doing good in our infected number... I feel for all the financial implications of this, and I am soon to be hit with it as well. I had a job lined up that I was confirmed for minus signing the paperwork and now it's possibly vaporizing. But I'm just gonna use this as some time off away from school/work this summer, work on my lx/laser/video integration skills I've been accumulating and wait until this fall to jump head first. There's gonna be a lot of people leaving the line of work, and definitely looks like there's going to be a massive influx of rescheduled events when this all blows over.
