I live in the Pacific Northwest in the USA and after what happened in Maui we have all been getting neighborhood meetings together to get a phone tree but also how we can all help and what to do in a "natural disaster", whether it be fire or earthquake. We have all been through it but seeing how FEMA failed miserably we all feel safer if we can help each other in an immediate situation.

And this is exactly the reason why you are bound to be successful in creating a productive and happy rural home in Spain. You have the right attitude, sensible perspective and willingness to work and learn that will help you to thrive both as an individual household and as part of the community.

A very honest conversation that proves the point that we don't know what we don't know and supports the concept that as in most things there is a learning curve that can feel difficult as you go through it. I do think you two should be proud of the adaptations you've made and the skills you've developed to build up your homestead. It takes time. Cheers!

I understand where you are coming from. I've been living this life for over 10 years now. And loving every minute. But the initial struggle to juggle work life to support the "homesteading" life is very real.. I no longer work for wages anymore and have been pretty much surviving off what I produce here on my farm both for myself and to sell for at least the last 6 or 7 years now. I love watching you guys develop your property. You are doing an awesome job. Love from Australia 🇦🇺

The good news is, the only deadline is your own. So you have the freedom to stop one project in order to do another that suddenly has priority. And needing more money than you thought you would, that's about to be a lot more with a baby. So you do what you can with what you have at the moment. You'll get there. Honestly, I think the only thing you both might be guilty of is trying to do too much. Hey, you're at 85k subscribers! Congrats. They say things get better financially when you hit 100,000. You did several things simultaneously that can be beneficial. Having chickens 🐔 helps to produce manure. Planting trees when you get land is a good thing because it takes time for them to grow. That's what I did as well (on a much smaller scale 😉) Getting my fruit trees was very important for me. The tiny house had to wait. I still have to do a lot in there to make it more comfortable but at least the trees are growing and we can harvest a lot of 🍎🍏🍑🍒 already. All the best to you. You're on the right way. You learn as you're going ahead.

In my opinion there is 2 choices: 1. mortage and a comfortable home together with waking up early with a siren, trafic jam and all other including things, worryes about a job, boss, competition etc. etc.... 2. tools, dirty jobs, buying milion materials forever - living out of comfort zone (for a while). And thingstend to not change: you discover how to make a beautiful thing or solution, before it is ready you already want a another new beautiful thing or solution at home. :) Wish you all the best!

Thanks for this wonderful video. Both of you are extremely hard workers. This will eventually pay off. You won't always be doing the difficult jobs because you will have finished some of them. You are very young and strong and intelligent. I admire you so much. My husband and I are old, but we still can take care of the animals and gardening, preserving, mending things when they break or wear out. I thank the Lord for blessing us. I love it because I was born and raised on this land. The family farm was sixty acres, and my first husband and I bought 4.7 acres from them. Since my siblings and I were taught how to do everything about farm life, that has helped us. My present husband was also raised on a farm, so that helped. I researched anything that I didn't know, purchased books and magazines, and now I use the internet. I love utube! The quickest way to find things and learn how to do something, as you know. I am also involved in crafts. My mom taught me and my sister how to sew from a very early age because that was how she was raised. I have always enjoyed being busy with countless things. I think that is therapeutic. Don't ever give up, but you do need to take time to rest so you won't wear out your body too soon. Especially since you are nursing your baby. In order for you to produce plenty of milk you have to eat very healthy foods and get enough sleep. I am not being bossy. I just want the best for you. And I know you know all this. I guess I am being like I am with my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Take care! You both are special people. Janice from Arkansas USA

Really nice discussion! We made a tiny stone house to work off grid with my parter, and we literally spent a week trying to find the cheapest shovel, we never owned one before, and even the basic things felt like a big investment. its amazing how much the little things can add up! Especially with a lot of retailers trying to up-sell you all the time, have to stay strong and get the one you need and no more! Much love, keep up the good work! ❤

One thing I have done (mostly unplanned, unwittingly) is learn all sorts of things to understand, from why chemicals, herbicides pesticides fungicides fertilizers are probably the worst things for healthy food, foods and animals. Repairing things is another, understanding why certain parts are very important for safety and maintaining things for the longer term. Language is certainly a good idea, it enables flexible thought processes and social connections. Bottom line, keep learning.

Gracais, chicos. Abrazo!

Finally a realistic view on the whole thing, I don’t think it is for me to live off the grid. I would love to grow my own food in a garden but I don’t think it would fix me. Currently I reside in a closet so I definitely am someone who thinks “when I’m out of here I will…” ugh, it’s frustrating to feel like life has been paused. To your point about being sure you like this lifestyle, my husband and I felt compelled by climate change dread to see if a more sustainable lifestyle was for us. We decided that an easy way to try it out at first was to use our vacation time to work on farms. For a year we would take a week or two at a time and WWOOF on different farms that were doing the kinds of agriculture we were interested in. After that, we decided we wanted to try for longer, so we both took sabbaticals and traveled for the following year working on different farms. We learned a lot, mainly that farming is a very, very difficult way to earn a living, and that we should be a bit realistic about how to diversify our income, especially in the beginning. But we also learned that we definitely want to make that change and pursue that lifestyle. By the way, we are currently looking in Spain for land. If you have any tips and are interested in having neighbors around your age who are interested in ecology and water cycle restoration, we'd be happy to know of anything available nearby.

Really great video and such valuable insight too I moved to Spain 4 (nearly 5) months ago so we're at the bureaucracy/paperwork stage 😓and I think it's probably been the most stressful time of our lives to be honest, but at the same time I wouldn't give it up for the world, I've just fallen in love with Spain and all I need to do to ground myself is just look around at the beautiful surroundings 🥰 We've actually lived in x2 rentals since being here (x1 in complete remote & high up on a mountain - but had to move as there were some miscommunication with the landlord allowing our x5 dogs 😕) and our current house is still rural but closer to a small town with a beautiful large garden for the dogs. But we are going to purchase a house in the next few months too. So although this was quite stressful, it actually gave us some valuable insight as to what property would suit us in reality - so my advice to anyone planning to move out would be to rent first and try it out, this is because on paper (and pictures) we would have jumped at purchasing a property on the mountain (1st rental) but the reality of that property was just a nightmare - so I really think us having to move seemed to all happen for a reason, so now we're at the stage where we are located in Spain and know exactly what property would suit as our forever home before actually purchasing 😀 Also another random note 🤣 - If anyone is moving to the South of Spain and wants to buy/adopt young hens 🐣🐔 , don't make the mistake we did and get them during summer 😱, get them during winter or up-until April - they don't start producing eggs otherwise (or they are more prone to underdevelopment) - A lesson we recently learned 🤣

Wow congrats on the move and battling your way through the bureacracy. I can't imagine people who move countries voluntarily more than once in their lives... once was enough for me! But like you say, worth it. Hope you find what you're looking for and yeah, it's great to try stuff out, and probs a lot more doable and affordable here than looking for short term rural rentals in the UK for example!

Hola. Sigo vuestro canal hace tiempo.

I couldn't agree more with the topic of not romanticizing this lifestyle. My entire extended family is composed of farmers with small homesteads like yours, and during childhood my sister and I were often sent to my aunt during vacation times because my parents had to work and so we could also help her in her farm. They never had time off, and never had vacations, because like you said, there were animals and chores to be done every day. Even though I love the countryside because of my upbringing and rather be surrounded by nature than in a city, I do not wish that life for me because I know from an early age how hard it can be. So I find other ways to be around nature and the countryside that work better with the life I want to have.
