I’ve got 7 different colors in the way from Barlows, I’m not casting my own jigs(yet), but I’m gonna try the coating soon, the walleye run is coming fast for the Detroit River. Thanks for this video!

@gutshot300mag it works great man. My jigs don't wear out. We lose them before they get any paint damage! We're going to be making deep drop jigs soon and using the same process. I preheat my molds a little differently. Pour the recessed side of the mold as full as reasonable then rest it, hot lead side up on top of your lead pot. Works well for keeping it warm if you need a short break too. Easy to tap off and remelt or store though not as pretty as the Fort Knox of ingots you've got on your bench. 😉 I think it's worth mentioning some safety tips: molten lead is very hot, over 600F, and can severely burn anything it touches. My worktop is testament to that. So no sandals or shorts, keep your work area free from clutter and your attention free from distraction. And yes, even after thousands of jigs I've spilled lead on both jeans, shoes and worktop. It was hot but I spared myself serious, blistering burns. Great tip on twisting that sprue! Thought I was the only one that did that. Cutting it off only leaves a sharp end that really needs to be removed by other means. Also your jig rack from the threaded rod is very similar to mine. Seen so many "solutions" to jigs sliding into each other that just don't work. 10-24 threaded rod does the trick for me. It's inexpensive and infinitely customizeable. For curing I prefer to orient my jigs "head up" by clamping them in a fixture. When hung "head down", if there's lots of powder, some excess will run down to the head and make a noticeable hardened drip. Jigs clamped in an upright position lets any excess flow down toward the hook where it can be removed without affection cosmetics or concealed by any jig dressing. There are over priced commercial clamps @ $20 a pop but I fashioned my own for about $7 each. I used aluminum angle and some self adhesive high temp silicone rubber strips secured by a couple of thumb screws. Great content here! Really neat to see someone else with some of the same solutions I'vs discovered over the years. Well done!

@michaelotto8696 Thanks man! I'm going to have to try that clamp thing. I like the idea of the "drip down" instead of filing it off later even though it doesn't happen that much. @atrkyhntr I don't know that there is a time frame for baking. Definitely next day will not be an issue. If you haven't seen them yet, I have a whole playlist on jig making here: kzbin.info/aero/PLYKMXAVLid5VE6GaFF6XPjokHYBIyV0gr I hope you subscribed and turned on notifications with the bell icon for the upcoming new fishing vids too! I tried to find in description What paint do you use
@scottnra
@scottnra 5 ай бұрын
@Stabicraft1450 I use the powder paint from Barlows Tackle. barlowstackle.com/barlows-epoxy-powder-paint-2-ounce-bottles/ They also have the Pro-Tec powders. I get all of my jig making stuff from them. Great outfit and good pricing. Please tell them Scott from KZbin sent you! Thank you for watching! Great video with useful tips. Thanks for sharing this. I hope to build a jig rack like yours. You made good use of the space in your oven. Do you every have paint clog up the eye of the jig when you bake hanging jigs?
@scottnra
@scottnra Жыл бұрын
@robertchadwick2925 only if I get a little slow on the dip. If you do take something that fits in the eye like a paper clip, hook or whatever and punch it while it's still hot. The paint will stick to the tool and easy be pulled off after it cools in a few seconds and your hook eye will be open. Don't forget Barlows Tackle is a GREAT resource for materials! www.barlowstackle.com tell them Scott from KZbin sent you. :-) Thank you for watching! You can easily chip off any paint on/in the eye when the jig is cool enough to handle before you cure/bake. I've got a small, trashy pocketknife that sees lots of edge damaging duty. Doesn't have to very sharp, just enough to flake off any excess paint and handle easily. Always work from the lead toward the top of the eye to avoid removing any paint from the jig itself. One other thing worth mentioning. Any serious mistakes can be recovered by tossing the jig(s) into a jar of acetone. Be careful, acetone vapors are not great for you and are extremely flammable. Even heavy, multiple coats will be softened enough to wipe off in a day or so, just give the jar a swirl every once in a while. Rinse after wiping with clean acetone and you're ready to paint from scratch!
