I do most of these things like paying attention to what I go into the most and picking best and worst hands and so on, but another thing I do sometimes is pick a few good tech cards and duel my opponent normally but only using one of those techs each time and switching it each duel, then see which they noticed. The ones that got their attention are either good and I should run at two or terrible in which case it's out. Obviously I ask them whether they noticed it because it's good or because it's bad lol

I was a "day 1-player" and had 3 formats in whose I played competitive (second generation of chaos format, Peak of Synchros and the Rabit-Wind-Up-Inzektor-format). Funny thing is that my skill evolved differently in each of those formats. I was 14 or 15 when I had to pull off with my budget deck against all those standard-chaos-decks with 3 Cyber Dragons, BLS and such. I adapted by running metacalls like a burn-quickdraw-engine (stealth bird, Sillva Warlord of the darkworld, gravity bind, Des Lacooda, Spirit Reaper, Magic Cylinder etc.) with my own budget-version of choas (Chaos Sorcerer, Skelengel, Thunder Dragons as CD-substitute etc). I analysed the meta and all weaknesses I could exploit and strenghts I had to be aware of and I rolled a numbers game by calculating odds. It was great as I was able to go second place on my locals, which raised my rank somewhere up to the 50s in germany. The peak of synchros was fine as I played my own version of tengu-plant with a zombie-engine, which had a better grindgame than other tengu-plant-decks and was more consistent then sychron-mash. Got third and learned about memorizing my opponents graveyard as two of them tried to cheat by using effects like bulb multiple times. The dino-rabbit-era was cool too as it was basically a stone, papers, scissors-system. Some techs really paid off that time, as did staples like Effect Veiler. Played a very basic version of Inzektors, with Sektcalibur as a tech as it wasn't popular that time. Gorz saved my sorry as a few times though. All in all, I have had just a few rules of preparation: 1. Play against every meta-ish deck as much as possible to learn the patterns and functions 2. think outside of the box; some great techs are "old worthless cards" nobody would see coming 3. don't be too proud to take advise. It won't harm you to at least try out something 4. Play every day against different decks if possible to stay in form 5. Most important: Just have FUN!

One thing I recommend: If you're testing how a specific 2- or 3-of card helps in your deck, draw an opening hand of 4 + the card you want to see. Or, act as though going second and draw 5 + the card you want to see. Play out the most optimal plays you can and see if that card helps or is actually a brick.

My friends sometimes do a challenge with each other sometimes. Stack all spells/traps on top and monsters on bottom and vice versa which is a good way to play test since some decks worst hands could be a hand full of spells and traps
@protectagainstmstds97547 жыл бұрын
My personal problem is that I can focus too much on my plays weaknesses instead of their strengths. For example: Drident turn one can halt all my plays and I will lose to Zoo...BUT once I'm actually in the situation, I can find ways to play around problematic situations and cards that I never thought of when I was just doing theory based testing. Sometimes you have to throw yourself into the fire to learn how to avoid getting burned.
