Hey Tyler You asked for other tips Uncle Ben Eller suggests you also do burst picking. Pick at half speed, then bust at full speed for say 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 notes then return briefly to the half speed. Sort of interval training for your fingers.

Tips to improve picking speed 1.Playing with feel and rhythm by using a metronome or a drum machine. 2.Feel relaxed and synchronize both hands 3.Avoid String hoping as these would decrease your speed eventually 4.Use One way pick slanting like downward or upward pick slanting when you come across even number of notes per string change. 5.Use 2 way pick slanting when you come across odd number of notes across string change. 6. Use cross picking when you come across one note per string or alternate picking arpeggios. I figured these tips solely from youtube guitarists 1st tip from Stevie T and Tyler 2nd tip from Tyler Larson and the rest of the tips from Troy Grady. These are the tips that I follow and it helped me a lot. These tips helped me to play play every alternate picking sequence that I come across..And also it helped me to shred 16 note triplet notes and also 200 bpm shredding with ease...,👍

"Use crosspicking" you say that as if it was easy lol.
@christians.77177 жыл бұрын
Don't forget economy picking, will also help. String skipping will make you slower, but also changing strings does. Thats ok, just train it. Nobody wants to pick insanely fast on one string or only go to thet ones beside it. You just need to learn to be even faster on string to hit that speed you want at string skipping. Use the tip of the pick and try beveled picks like chicken picks (Badazz suggestion 2,5mm) Settle for one pattern don't change it, while speeding up! Overall I think tip 1 and 2 are the most important. You need to be relaxed to avoid injuries and you need to hit the beat in order to sound good.

If it's something that I've learned from Shawn Lane, and John Petrucci also mentions this, is that if you feel stuck within a certain tempo on the metronome, you should bring the speed up to a level where you can't play what you're working on, and then bring it back down to where it's comfortable again. I have noticed great results doing this.
@hyenaswine3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I feel like I use three steps to get things up to speed: 1. play slow till a plateau 2. play too fast 3. then the hands find a way to get there, they evolve, compensate.

Bleed is actually a lot about of endurance as opposed to speed. If you have even a lil decent picking technique you can play bleed and build endurance rather quick. Ive learned over the last 17+ yrs that proper picking techniques in different styles is THE key, and for me was the "final key" really after multiple plateaus through the years (was self taught). When someone is on the stage and they can have a adrenaline dump the fight or flight. When this happen a person can do what is called hyperventilating or shallow breathing the air does not go down to the lungs and I have seen people pass out and then they start breathing normally. It is the brain saying hey we are not get O2 and it takes you out so it can take control of your breathing. You can also have tunnel vision, hearing an sight slow down, shaking, and other symptoms of adrenaline each person is different. As a x-SWAT police officer I just started breathing deep and slow and the that usually gets rid of a lot of fight or flight systems. The breathing you are describing is called hyperventilating or shallow breathing. I agree I get real nervous playing in front of my Instructor and I am most likely was holding breath and my hands shook I have only been with this instructor once and he has had and continues to be a studio musician in Nashville and has been playing for 35 years. So I completely made a fool out of myself I could not do nothing right. So that I could get rid of this problem I asked that we just talk and get to know each other and that helped. I have a lesson with him this week and breath thank you for pointing this out I did not notice but I bet I was holding my breath.

@wonnie7 жыл бұрын
I think pick gauge and string gauge is pretty subjective and not as fact as you say it is. I play on 11-52s with a 0.48mm Jim Dunlop Delrin pick and I would say that I'm pretty fast when it comes to picking (although now I prefer working on my legato and chicken picking). Paul Gilbert's official picks are now 0.5mm and he plays 10s-11s on his Fireman as well, and he's a pretty fast and accurate picker. Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes used to use 0.6mm Tortex on 9s (but on a 28" scale which increases tension)... Daniele Gottardo 11s... Tom Quayle 11-52s... The list goes on about people who play fast with different setups. More people go for lighter gauges for bending instead of consciously thinking "oh man, thinner strings = faster speed!"

I would suggest anyone practicing anything to play with a little bit of distortion (somewhere along the lines of AC/DC) because it will amplify any subtle mistakes or nuances (i.e. sympathetic strings & improper string dampening) that you will not hear on a clean channel. I would also suggest playing through a distortion channel that will do you no favors. Meaning no delay, boost, overdrive, reverb or any other effects. Keep as dry as possible in order for you to hear exactly what you're playing and to gauge whether or not what you're playing is clean. If you can play and sound clean through a sound like that, you will sound clean through anything.

You have to be relaxed to do any physical activity at a high speed consistently. Practice really slowly at first until your muscles get used to the motion of picking, so that you can speed up without you muscles being super tense.

What I do (at least for rhythm picking speed a la big 4) is go for eight notes down picking 2 measures, alternate 16ths for 3 measures and repeat 4 times. I then just go one measure each, another 4 times. I then add 10 bpm and go again. After I hit my max, I decrease by 10 bpm each time to "warm down" my forearm

I have a question for others, and this video seems like the perfect place since I am struggling with picking speed. I have been practicing with a metronome the 3 notes per string yngwie lick. I have my metronome set to 50 bpm, with 4 clicks. I play the lick 6 notes per 1/4 note. I am getting frustrated because as soon as I go up to 55 bpm, I start to mess up bad. My question is: How long did it take you to be able to play a lick at shredder speed? 1 month? 1 year? I get the concept, play cleanly and gradually increase your speed, while making sure not to proceed to the next level until your playing is clean. I am stuck. I can't get my hands synchronized and my picking feels very poor as well. I just hope you all can tell me how long it took you to get to fast. I am stuck at "Step Dad speed".

Oddly I switched to a clean channel to work on something else the other day and then worked on a riff I am trying to get neatly at speed and discovered I was nowhere near happy with it on clean. After that I switched to clean for speed pick practice a lot more and just occasionally on distorted. Pretty good tips all around though. Though I did go the opposite of picks, went from a 1.0 to .88 and eventually on a hard .73 All 3 of those feel ok for me.

Practicing along to drum loops and backing tracks is okay, but this can tend to be too comfortable and supportive like a safety net. Much better to use a metronome where there is nowhere to hide your bad technique, and you can really feel and hit the first stroke of every four notes etc.
