It’s only because of the insane rule changes. NBA players who played in the Euroleague said it’s harder to score in that league than the NBA. It clearly shows the NBA rules have gotten worse through the years. Luka Doncic said the NBA was far easier to score than the Euroleague. This is an offensive easy mode era.

It doesn’t change the fact that the rules are at an all time worse in the NBA today. Luka still didn’t back off the fact that it’s easier to score in the NBA. Discourse about past basketball vs present basketball is so difficult to have because there is no actual way to make things fair. If we flash back just to 2010 just think about how far the game has come. Think about in 2014(IIRC) and the clip of PG shooting the shot from the logo, and how impressed everyone was. Now we have 5-10 clips in the last 4 seasons of LeBron (considered and average shooter) pulling up from the half court line with 20 seconds on the shot clock and draining it and we are unfazed. Really ask yourself how the 2010 version of yourself would react to a 7’5” rookie shooting 45% on stepback threes. The game has evolved so much in just two decades and I don’t think we really stop to appreciate how crazy it is.

@@tyresejones3535 this is a really interesting conversation imo. The overall talent in the league leads me to think they wouldnt look as dominant as they did. I think they still would be the leagues best by a good bit but the Celtics and Nuggets are constructed so well I think they would give them a run for their money. Ultimately a team with Prime Curry and KD is nearly unbeatable but I think modern teams would make a series far more interesting than anything we saw

Using the wrong terminology and it’s still inaccurate. Ralph Sampson existed. He just didn’t shoot threes because it wasn’t essential to the game in the 80’s. “Nothing is new under the sun”. You referencing 2010 lmk your knowledge of the game isn’t that in depth, which is why you think the game has “evolved”. Basketball isn’t better or evolved. Sports science & medicine evolved. Cultural attitudes changed. Money & revenue changed. Rules changed. Basketball is still the same simple silly game Naismith created.

I don't want to reveal my age, but I've watched NBA games from the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and modern times. Honestly, it's all irrelevant. Every era has its share of bad teams, and we should appreciate basketball for what it is. We have superstars today, just like in the past. Rules have changed for a reason, and we should enjoy what we have. Let's not forget how much we missed sports in 2020 when it was taken away.

The late 2000s to the early 2010s was the most balanced era imo. Offense could still be offense, but the defense was still allowed to be defense. Teams were often scoring in the high 90s or the low 100s in regulation, and it would take them one or more OTs to score 110+ points or more as opposed to now. I think that the NBA can still find that balance, but they actually need to try to find it and commit to it. I don't like a lot of the things that occur in today's game (weak foul calls, foul-baiting), but I also don't agree that 80s or 90s basketball was that much better.

The 2000’s is for sure one of the best eras talent wise. The league was packed with great players in their primes like Kobe, Duncan, T-Mac, KG, Shaq, Dirk, Iverson, Kidd, Nash, Ray Allen, Melo, Wade and young LeBron. All of those players in their prime meant for one of the most exciting leagues ever. Even then, the 2000’s had it’s own flaws. The officiating in that era is probably the most shady it’s ever been in history. The Donaghy scandal doesn’t help matters either. The Lakers and Spurs also being in all but one Finals also sort of impacts its legacy in its competitiveness.

On thing to take into consideration I’d say more with kyrie and luka is the able handling rules. If you use the 90s regulations those two are getting called for travels and carries a lot. And for KD I think the Boston series as well as the series against the grizz exposed all you need to do to slow him down. All you need to do to do is get up under KD and make it hard for him to get to his spots maybe foul him occasionally to stop him from getting into rhythm

As for the handling point, these players do these things because they know they can get away with it. If the rules tightened up, within a season they would adapt to the new restrictions.

Agree on this 100%. Looking back, I think 80’s Jordan has caused a lot of people to remember the 80’s differently then it should. I see a lot of people online absolutely slandering both Magic and Bird’s achievements in the 80’s as purely team success to prop up Jordan. The amount of times I’ve seen Magic’s MVP’s on the 80’s flamed to make Jordan look better is insane. And his own failures given a pass because he “Ran into great teams”. Now this isn’t a Jordan slander post. I know Jordan was still great then, and was absolutely tearing it up but we shouldn’t use that to tear down the success of other players. It also results in other great players of the time like Moses Malone, Sidney Moncrief, Dennis Johnson and James Worthy getting forgotten or underrated because the 80’s is lumped in with the 90’s too often because of Jordan.

The problem I have with the 90s in general is that people from that decade have had a strangle hold on society for far to long. The people from the 60s-70s and even 80s era who criticized the 90s have mostly died off or are over looked while the 90s basically have free reign to criticize everything uncontested. Explain this to me: how can rings from the 60s and 70s be discredited and looked down on but when we try to look down on the rings of the 90s it’s wrong? It’s unfair to use the bill Russell argument but 90s fans use Jordan’s 6-0 as the bench mark. It’s similar to the NFL Joe Montana and terry Bradshaw had 4 rings and by the time Brady got to 4 rings he’d already had 2 SB loses and one of those loses were in an undefeated season plus his 2 loses came from Eli manning who was a .500 QB. So my thing is if Brady with SB loses was called the goat because it came to him just having more rings then why doesn’t that rule apply to Jordan? Brady even left to stacked team and won a ring and no one discredits it’s but in the NBA it’s different? I think we say we’re done with the 90s because we’re done with the double standards that the 90s era clings to

💥💥Even though I couldn't stand Michael Jordan I prefer the 1990s basketball. I don't even really watch NBA anymore because they don't play defense I don't enjoy watching two teams shoot 40 + 3-pointers. The uniforms that these teams be trotting out a lot of times are horrible. Like the NBA just ain't and im ok with that. I may have pay attention a little to the NBA during the playoffs that's probably the only time. At least in the playoffs they actually try to play hard and they attempt to play defense so i may warch the playoffs here and their when i can but i don't make it a priority. But watching the regular season no thanks. if the players don't care about the regular season why should I care about the regular season. Oh and another thing another reason why I don't really watch the NBA that much, the TV broadcasters are terrible over the last 10 plus years. Compared to the broadcasters we had back in the 1990s on NBC and TNT and TBS even in the early 2000s the the NBA announcers were better back then.

The 90’s weren’t a horrible or weak era, that’s a huge myth. Jordan played against half of the best players and defenders of all time in that decade, a lot of them were in their primes or entering their primes. This includes Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, John Stockton, Gary Payton, Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler, Joe Dumars, Shawn Kemp, Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, Alonzo Mourning, Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond, Kevin Johnson and Mark Price. He faced many of these all time great players in the Eastern conference in his day. LeBron only faced one all-NBA player in the East during 2011-2018 where he made 8 consecutive Finals runs and that was Derrick Rose.
