Although my mom at 86 years of age had sharp, normal mental capacity-no signs of forgetfulness-dementia-etc, she suddenly one day started acting confused, irrational, and bewildered. The doctors told me that this is the beginning of her mental decline-but it was an experienced, sharp nurse who told me to insist that I have the doctors check for a urinary tract infection. At first, I thought “what does that have to do with her mental decline?”, but she explained that urinary tract infections in the elderly will cause them to suddenly act like the way my mom was acting. She turned out to be absolutely correct. She had a serious urinary tract infection. Once they gave her the antibiotics, she returned to herself again. It made me wonder how many other elderly people were misdiagnosed as early onset of dementia when in actuality he/she had a serious urinary tract infection.

Happened to my mother too after her KN replacement.....Hosp staff did not pick it up they kept on writing dementia on her notes ....I removed her from hosp & took her to her GP who trained in the UK . Asked her to prescribe Macrodantin she agreed as she said it was prescribed for many elderly & those in nursing homes in the UK ....After first course of meds my mother was a new person she was then prescribed a low dose each day until she passed 5 yrs later 🇦🇺 .

This is an amazing story! Thank you for sharing your mom’s experience. It seems that common infections such as UTIs should always be ruled out when someone 75+, 85+, and into their 90s, is doing and functioning well and is suddenly confused and irrational. To just pronounce someone as having dementia is either a negligent doctor or one who is not properly trained.

Good God I hope they knew about this!!! Get your mom D-Mannose ASAP Because it pissed off my own urologist LOL pun intended, when I yelled at her and asked why they never told the elderly about this product... my mother never got a UTI again when she started taking the powder, you can also take the pills but the powder is better as it encourages more liquid drinking. Also Jelly drops is a good product for the elderly if they're not drinking a lot, it started in the UK

I nearly died from having sepsis, twice, due to kidney infections. Antibiotics prescribed by doctor's, we're not helping, and actually making things worse. I started on cranberry supplements, with probiotics, and added apple cider vinegar and oregano oil. i haven t been in the hospital for nearly a year, now. If i had just continued to go to the doctor's, and not started on the cranberry supplements and oregano oil, I believe I very possibly, would be dead, by now. Oregano oil , kills e coli, and the cranberry keeps the E coli, from attatching, to the bladder walls. You must keep the oregano oil dosage very low, and only take it occasionally, for no more than a week to 10 dqys, at a time, as it is damaging in high dosages. For proper dosing, do your own research, on-line.

What I have learned that helped me : hydration is very important - never to hold urine for a long time .... when you have to go - don' t wait ... go. I have a long arm attached to my shower head and after wiping myself front to back I have a lower body short shower after a bowel motion - Pass urine after intercourse - Rebuild your immune system with probiotic and prebiotics - find Kefir and fermented food - take anti infective tablets Hiprex ( 2 daily ) avoid stress if possible learn to meditate - sleep enough . Cranberry jui but not the commercial variety - the one from chemist or healthfood store ... or the high potency tablets. Work on yourself learn to became more peaceful . All of this has worked for me very well as a diabetic. Good luck - much love !

Very surprised that you did not mention the use of D-mannose . There are now good studies demonstrating its effectiveness (but only for E-coli). My older mom takes 2g every day and it works. Before she used to get UTIs almost every month, now it is exceptional. People that have these as recurring infections should be notified of the existence of this product. It is also effective in case of infection but the dose is much stronger (2g 3 times a day). It is just as effective as antibiotics without the problems.

Are we still in the dark ages, when a doctor tells us to wipe front to back? Millions of women end up with a chronic embedded infection because they were not treated quickly enough or with a long enough course of antibiotics. Patients should be scribed based on symptoms, not any test. We have over 450 different bacteria in other bladder and any one of these could be causing symptoms. Just because e-coli for example shows up, it doesn't mean that's the one causing symptoms. Most are unknown, so would not be recognised. Maybe purchase Cystitis Unmasked by James Malone-Lee, he spent over 45 years researching embedded UTIs. Sadly he is no longer with us, but has a fantastic NHS team at the Whittingham as well as 10 Harley Street, that see patients who have ended up with an embedded uti, because they were not given a long enough, not high enough, course of antibiotics.

I had surgery to remove a large sacral chordoma tumor from my sacrum and lumbar spine. Because of the tumor, I have lost control of several functions, one of which is passing urine. I was suffering a new UTI practically every month. While I was in the hospital to address an MSSA staph infection that was growing around my sizeable collection of titanium parts that were installed to keep my upper skeleton attached to my lower skeleton, my Plastic Surgeon / Oncologist discussed with me about me possibly getting a suprapubic catheter and ceasing the use of a catheter going through my urethra. I went ahead and had the procedure for the suprapubic catheter, and ever since that time (approximately 1 year) I have had zero UTIs to contend with. The suprapubic catheter is proving to be vastly superior in my case.

I had recurring UTI symptoms which sent me to the off hour clinic more than once. Oddly, no bacteria was found in the culture. After watching many masterclasses online I decided to do a parasite cleanse. After 30 days on a capsule which has mimosa pudica as well as the usual antiparasitic herbs I noticed that I had urinated out some small odd curved items that looked out of place. They were big enough to see and not microscopic. That was 2 years ago and I have not had any urgency, pain, or uncontrollable releases. There are very healthy parasite cleanse protocols out there that are quite inexpensive (less than the copay for dr visit).

The side effects of these two medications were so intense that I had to stop taking them gradually. However, my immune system reached a very low point and I ended up with UTI and in three days with sepsis. I became delirious lost all energy and joint stamina and developed low grade fever. I contacted my urologist who prescribe an antibiotic for seven days. It did not work. Then he prescribed another antibiotic and I started feeling better. At the onset, however, I had no symptoms. Thank you. I went to urgent care in January asking if I had a UTI, and doc said it must be just a yeast infection, or a bacterial vaginosis. I wasn't sexually active, so it would have been from something else. They finally diagnosed me in March, but by then it went to my kidneys. Then came almost three months of trying out antibiotics which: 1) didn't clear it, 2)maany made me very sick (extrene fatigue, iron issues, extreme leg pain within a day, nausea, etc). It finally got better in June,. Please make sure to advocate for yourself and demand tests in doubt, and repeeat them within a week or two if not better. Some doctors can be reckless, assuming , arrogantly, who you are as a person (downplaying symptoms), and rushing you out of the office so they can go home. Oh, the cause was e coli: I later remembered I had diarrhea in December. I forgot about it until e coli was seen on the test, and I was asked if I had anal sex - I had no sex at all in a while).

Doctors can be frighteningly stupid and arrogant. I have no clue how most of these people got through medical school. I cared for my 80+ y.o. parents for 8 years. What I saw and learned on the way to the funerals terrifies me for my own old age. With both parents I was asked if I just wanted to put them in a hospital bed and they would be "medicated" until they died! No exageration! This country has zero respect for the elderly or younger people with disabilities. It makes me sick the shoddy - or lack of - care, compassion and respect the elderly and disabled are given in this country.

There was also some nonsensical speech but it had stopped before the ambulance arrived. One thing I didn't mention they felt was related is I had been falling a lot and hitting my head, had several CAT scans. The full diagnosis was not seizure, not stroke. Probably accumulative mild concussions and UTI. About them not diagnosing, I am a medical lab tech. I had never heard special symptoms for older patients. Primary ignored "blood in urine" and patient's rights: four months ago I notified my primary physician I had extreme blood in my urine, he stated "peep track of it" . . he was out of the office that day with a doctor on-call and no office support. None reached out to me, infection was at the state of "sepsis shock" when I arrived at the emergency room, they did what all country medical teams do, traveled 1 1/2 hours from their facility to a "state of the art hospital specializing in sepsis patients." Spent four days, many tests with normal results. Added gift: yeast infection with anti-bionics took close to two weeks to clear up. This was my second UTI in my lifetime (81 years old) . . . healthy, no health issues . . . physical/blood tests once a year . . . of course I no longer see this primary since "patients rights were ignored" (in my attorney hands) I'm a RN still working - NYState-USA🌹

Primary care doctors are a waste of time in my opinion. Many times, I too had primary doctors that missed something that ended up becoming more severe or a full blown issue at some point. I no longer go to primary care doctors for much of anything. For my yearly physical I go see a gynecologist because she specializes in that specific area. I also go to see an otolaryngologist for my ears and nose, etc.

Never (knowingly) had Covid, but I am now suspecting all these weird new symptoms are from the 3 unowhats I had. I wonder if whatever. The vaccines did to my immune system is common in other folks who are now getting frequent UTIs? I'm 68, have had a bladder infection for 12 years. Only one symptom, foul smelling urine with no other symptoms. Throughout the years my FP has put me on several different antibiotics. Symptom went away while I'm on the antibiotic. But about 2 days after finishing the antibiotics the symptom comes back. I'm also diabetic. Saw a urologist and she recommended that I go on a low dosage antibiotic for the rest of my life. I told her no way, because I feel that would do more harm than good in the long run. So, I just deal with it. Was told it's caused by the ecoli bacteria. I've taken all the sanitary precautions but still nothing changes. Ever since menopause I've also had the problem of my bladder not completely emptying when I pee and sometimes I have to go pee again a couple minutes later to finally empty the bladder. I've tried pushing on my bladder to try to completely empty it but it doesn't always work.

My mom is 83 years old and has dementia. What make her more prone to UTI is due to her diahrea from tube feeding. She got her first UTI this week and the only reason why it was found was because she was acting different as in confused and have trouble expressing herself than usual. She had a slight fever that caused me to worry and brought her in the er to have it checkout. Sure enough she had a UTI and the urine culture indicated it was e-coli. Luckily, her e-coli can be easily treated by many different antibiotics and she was back to herself with in 2 days. Her white blood cell count and fever return to normal and poof. She was back to her normal self, alert and talkative. Just remember that you can have diarrhea while under antibiotic treatment so don’t be alarm. I wish there are ways that I can help to prevent this better for her constant diarrhea from tube feeding makes it more difficult to prevent her feces from contaminating her urinary path ways. Having diapers on all the time only make it worse. All I can do is now watch her more closely for weird symptoms and act quickly. Any suggestions to help minimize would greatly appreciated.

Last one was on a holiday weekend, and couldn’t get a referral to go to a walk-in clinic, so I went to the hospital. Got some antibiotics which gave me some relief by the next day ! The nurse said to stop taking the med prescribed and the pharmacy would have a new one ready for me shortly. I asked her why, what was wrong with the first med. She said it was NOT killing the infection in the lab so I needed a new med. I was shocked and grateful to find out they actually did that! But you probably want to do both. The dipstick can identify a UTI in a minute. The culture takes a day or two. Urine is placed on and put in an ideal place for bacteria to grow. Little antibiotic dots are put on the surface. Bacteria will grow around the antibiotic or not. If the bacteria grows you have UTI. If it does not grow around one of the dots it means that is that antibiotic will cure your UTI. They may have a newer method.

Another cause that mimics bladder infection symptoms is Interstitial Cystitis. It can't be diagnosed with a regular cystoscopy because the damage is coming from underneath the top bladder wall. Urine testing won't show bacteria because there's no infection, although it certainly feels that way. A more advanced cystoscopy done specially for this chronic disease is warranted. I had incontinence op 20yrs ago from then on I started getting urine infections. I was 50yrs old. I am 70 now in fact I had to hand sample in to clinic last week there was 2 bugs in it. I have to take antibiotics on a regular basis. Anyway a few years I was rushed to hospital I couldn't breathe. I was put on oxygen straight away. Next day a top lung Dr came to see me. He said I was a mystery patient & him and the anesthesiotist plus another couple were going to have meeting bout me. As it turned out inside my chest was badly scored & my lungs were filling up with fluid, I was in for 2wks & it happened year later. I had been on the nitrofuriton for 7yrs & wasn't once during that time. I found out later woman are only on them for 3mths & being monitored. Next was the other one u mentioned my body started fighting them, I could watch the hives coming up. Amoxocillin don't work anymore. Now I am put on different antibiotics every 3 months. My lungs are still not functioning 100%. My worry is that my body will eventually build up a defence to the one's I can take.

At one point, I had 5 UTI's in 1 year. My doctor ended up prescribing Hiprex as a med to take as soon as the symptoms occur. This is a very strange coincidence. Last night at 2 a.m., I started getting the pain and burning, so I got up and took 2 tabs. By 4am, the symptoms eased a little. I'll take them for the next 3 days to eliminate the infection. I always ensure I have a bottle in my med cabinet. Cheers Rosemary Perth Western Australia 73yrs

@roses9339 - I totally agree with you. I have had the samme experience! Haiprex really helps preventing infections. So why does dr. Sinan not mention this simple remedy which is used for people with urinary catheters in hospitals etc? Getting antibiotics constantly is certainly not healthy, prevention is far better! Women after menopause who are susceptible to get a bladder infektion, e.g. in connection with intercourse, can easily avoid infection by taking a few Haiprex tablets starting the day before. I'm 78, male, and have another UTI. This is not the first time. This time I tried to treat it with cranberry juice, high dose vitamin C, and waiting for the immune system to kick in. But although the symptoms were not getting worse, they were becoming annoying, such as even more bathroom breaks during the night or while out shopping. So eventually I bit the bullet and joined the dreaded 8 a.m. telephone queue for my GP, knowing that I would have to go through the long list of questions the receptionist needs to ask. Anyway, now I'm on a 7-day course of nitrofurantoin, and already on Day 2 I am getting some improvement. No side effects so far.

This is only really about cystitis in women. This is huge problem because UTIs in men is common in old age due to poor emptying and is so seldom talked about. My husband had months of trouble, masses of anti-biotics and still takes D-Mannose everyday to prevent trouble from E-coli. E-coli is only one of many infections that cause UTIs and infrequent in men. If only doctors would talk more about UTIs in men and the elderly.

That's (to say the very least) extremely misleading. The vast majority of people get minimal side-effects from antibiotics, probably at most a mild stomach upset. Urinary infections, especially in older people, are not trivial, and need to be treated properly, which generally means antibiotics. You shouldn't make baseless claims that could put people off having effective and safe treatments.

Thank you for this info on bladder infections. Mine started in mid-October 2022. Seen 7 doctors. Problem still persists. 1st Doctor - urine sample, diagnosed bladder infection, prescribing antibiotics. Discomfort in lower abdomen disappeared. Replaced by intense sensation just before peeing, that I thought at first was pain. Same sensation when urinating sometimes & intense if dropping onto a chair too hard. Had to press very hard to get urine out, till discovering pushing was effecting my anus. Thought it had become an infection in the urethra, cause that's what it felt like. Google gave me second opinion. 2nd Doctor - urine sample, prescribed second course antibiotics. She made no comment after I said I thought it was now in the urethra, & she later refered to it as a bladder infection again. 3rd Doctor - urine sample, third course of antibiotics. 4th Doctor - referred me to a clinic for tests and thereafter to another hospital. 5th Doctor at clinic - seven extremely painful attempts at extracting a PAP smear & gave a clear AIDS test. When asking Google why a PAP smear is so painful, the answer was, that its not at all painful though some people might experience discomfort. This one wonders how PAP smears are done in America as opposed to this South African country where the pain immobilises you? 6th Doctor - previous PAP results not provided, so he had another 2 highly painful PAP smear attempts, prescribing Penicillin without establishing allergic reaction. Thankfully, I read the box & was then given Austell-Ciprofioxacin. Diagnosis: "Shift in flora suggestive of Bacterial Vaginosis" 7th Doctor - returned to the 5th Doctor with severe flu & same urine condition. Prescribed Penicillin which she exchanged for Austell-Ciprofioxacin the next day. I advised each Doctor that the infection started the day or two days after I ill-advisedly smeared Anethane Cream between my legs at the utter nagging insistence of a peculiar person I know, who handed me the tube without the box. None of the Doctors seen responded to that or thought it relevant at all. Only one doctor said it was not for internal use. Me, I think the Anethane caused this condition. There was no burning urine, discharge, smell, itch, rash or other manifestation. The sensation is not as severe as it was, though still strong. Started getting nauseous occasionally (I've seldom been nauseus in my life), followed by nausea every day now. Heartburn, headaches (didn't used to get them often). Calf & foot cramps when sleeping or on waking, after none for over a year. Hand jerks when working with the computer mouse. Somehow, not writing the same. Irritable as hell. Feel peculiar, just not right. Guess I'm wasting my time here too. Just to put it on public record - if an 8th Doctor asks for a urine sample I will get on top of his desk and give it to him there.

Hiprex turns to formaldehyde in your body. That's what prevents the UTI infection. You cannot take it when you have an active UTI -ONLY as a preventative! . I'm not sure if I should take it or not! There's other natural things you could do- taking oil of oregano and oil of thyme and cloves all together WITH FOOD-but it was SO STRONG -my stomach couldn't take it! Kept getting upset stomach and the runs -it was TOO strong for me- maybe just the oil oregano alone would work. I agree ,it's VERY IMPORTANT to stay off starches and sugar and dairy too ! It's not easy plus the MD said after you go through menopause, your hormones get low and can't protect you from UTIs They recommend estradiol cream- my naturopath said better to take the NATURAL form of it- estriol. but my md didn't want to give me a script for that- so I am taking the estradiol . I don't know if it'll work -you'll have to take it long term.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, cranberry capsule or sachets are common and you can buy them over the counter. They can be helpful if you take them before the onset of symptoms (ie before you know you have a UTI) to prevent a UTI but this often involves taking them everyday which can be cumbersome. For some people that get UTIs a lot, this one option of many in the toolkit but for most people, who have maybe 1 UTI a year, this is too much effort to take something everyday.
