Bought one fir 20 bucks today. Looking to restore it . Drove 1.5 hours one way for it..been looking fir a jack. And these restoration got me so ready to clean it up ..it's going up slowly 🐌

I was fortunate to have a Sears store near where I grew up. Ninety percent of my tools came from their Craftsman line, and they had everything you could imagine. I remember too when "Made in Japan" meant junk, but that got turned around pretty quick beginning with the Toyota and Honda cars. Thanks, Roadking.

I was going to SAY... The one you're fixing looks like my early '80s ATG(?) from Japan (I'll confirm the brand when I look at it later). I was thinking about throwing it out later today, which led me to look for repair options. The last time I used it (about 20 years ago), I had my '74 Grand Am up in the air the front to install my rotors that I'd drilled & non-directional finished AFTER I painted them red, so they looked pretty kickin'. Went in to get my wife to take a look at them (yep, showing off) and, when we came back out, the rotors were sunk about four inches into the dirt because the jack had failed. Played hell getting another one under it : )

I sold jacks like this one back about 25 or so years ago. They were imported ( in Canada) by Jet Tools, at the time,, and sold under different 'brand names." The raised or cast in number on the lifting saddle, usually meant the capacity, i.e M150, usually meant 1.5 tons. This is an interesting repair. I'll be looking forward to Part 2 now.

My dad bought that exact jack new in 1970 something. It is the green model with the sears sticker still in it. That jack has built big block Chevelles, 36 Fords, lifted jeeps, and much more. Still works perfect to this day and I use it.

There was a second number under the second model number you showed. Took a lot to bend those. Easy enough job taking apart. Good luck with putting the new ones on.

I have a jack that is very similar, it was given to me by a friend. It was no good, so I changed the oil which came out black (and still didn't work). I then dismantled it and found the seal was a black crumbly mess so I went to a bearing supply and took the piston and bore into them and they found a suitable jack specific seal and O rings. I then cleaned it all out and rebuilt it and it is still working some two years later.

Somehow, your friend or someone must have put brake fluid in it thinking it would be OK. Don't work that way. Hydraulic jack fluid is the only fluid that should be used.

Looks like a fairly straight forward repair. I would be so tempted to replace the valve also.

Yeah I though about it!! I'm thinking the valve is good, but maybe some seals are worn, causing it to lower unwanted!! Thus causing someone to overtighten it enough to bend the steel gears!! I won't be surprised if we have to go a little deeper into it!!☺

Exactly my thoughts too. I found the piston seal to be most common failure for leak down on those animals. Loved the comments on those Chinese jacks. There are some things in life to avoid. There are times when one will go underneath something without jack stands because, well - it will only be a minute!

I have the same jack, but the Sears/Craftsman version, circa 1989-ish. Nice strong jack, the only complaint is that I can't feather it back down. Everything I jack up comes to a crash landing. It's like "everyone clear?, OK, CRASH!" I even pinned a buddy's arm in an upper control arm once. He's like "OK let it down..., pick it back up. QUICK!" Interested in seeing how yours functions after the repair. Obama gas, ha, ha. My kids will always remember my rants about it.

I have the same jack, made in Japan. I bought it new in about 1983. It is a copy of an Australian made "Armstrong" brand Jack. Mine has recently starting to leak down so it needs a rebuild. I just need to find a seal kit.

In Australia they where called a Hi Lift Armstrong Jack,, I think they where from Japan a long time ago,,I still have two of em and are great for 4 wheel drives

Thanks Drew!! I did see that, I don't think it's enough to create a problem!! I think the seals were probably leaking and it was lowering by itself!! So the best way to fix that is to turn the handle till you bend the steel cogs eh!!☺

Sheet pans? Yes, that shallow pan is STILL available. Go to a place that caters to commercial food preparers. (Bakers, prep cooks, dessert cooks, anyone in the food prep business.) You are looking for a full-size sheet pan. Vollrath is a DECENT manufacturer. steve

I have the same exact jack. Used it several times a few months ago, but now the white handle won't budge/turn at all (need to turn it to the right so it actually pumps up, it's stuck too far left so pumping it doesn't raise it). Any ideas?

Y'know, that US washer under the one spur gear might have raised it up enough so that it allowed the gear teeth to be slightly un-meshed. I never did anything like that, BUT I have known mechanics to sabotage shop owned equipment they don't like so they can order new stuff. Floor jacks being one such item. Regardless of the added washer you would have had to really twist those gears HARD to do that. I sure hope the valve is good. One of mine needs a rebuild as it leaks down slowly (I have the kit) but in any case it's a cheap part as you say.

I have a JC Penney 1-1/2 ton floor jack that I bought new in the 1970's also made in Japan. It looks identical to yours except for the color which is black and yellow. I have the original manual with parts list including an exploded view. I would be glad to send you a scanned copy of the manual, but I don't know how to do that other than with an email attachment.

If you knew how to gas weld you could rebuild those gear teeth back up and reform them with you diamond grinder. It would have only taken about 1 1/2 hrs to do that then let it cool. Re-assemble and build it up. Then check to see if it will lower and pump back up. If not then replace the "O" rings.

Don't know if you have this info already; if it's a Craftsman/Sears, the three digits 328 were sears code for Tru-products inc. as mfg. They had a subsidiary Tru-lift, which made hydraulic rams, jacks etc. Here's a trademark filing website www.trademarkia.com/trulift-73381917.html, from 1982. Hope it helps.

I did a bit of looking at old jacks online and found one picture of a jack that was similar enough that it might be made by the same company as yours, just at a different time. Anyway the picture was titled 1943 Walker floor jack. I know that Walkers jacks last for years (I have two from the eighties) and I also know that Walker has built jacks for tons of people to put their names on. Walker colors are blue and yellow but I've seen Walker floorjacks in all kinds of company colors. I could be wrong though. I found someone asking about a floorjack with the exact same casting number painted red, it was identified as an AUSCO D-7400 whether it was MADE by AUSCO or by Walker I don't know...

My jack has gears that are in good shape but they don't mesh. I can't see any way to either lower the stationary gear or raise the gear at the end of the handle. The handle gear is below the stationary gear.

What people don't realize is your jack may look like crap on the outside but with some new Jack oil and some new seals that you can buy at Harbor Freight oh my gosh you got a new Jack cuz all you do is have to grease up the coaster Wheels that's it I'll replace them and if any of you don't want their Jacks let me know I'll pay the shipping and handling and I'll take that Jack right off your hands

Do you suppose the bottom gear was held on with a nut or bolt that's been broke off ? Check for slop,bush if needed should work for many more moons.
