We feature and drive this extremely rare Dick Johnson Grand Prix Turbo Ford Falcon, believed to be one of only 43 examples ever produced back in the period of 1982/83! Combining the ever-reliable Ford 250 Crossflow six with a healthy sized turbocharger, along with various body and mechanical upgrades, these special edition Falcons bearing famous Australian Racer Dick Johnson's name were an absolute rocketship.
At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

I`m still a bit of a fan of the 60`s and 70`s , i miss my little 289 XR, that was a good car , XY`s my all time fav of the early henrys , also quite liked the XD`s , back then we had the police contract and i always had a woody jumping into an XD V8 interceptor , not that fast by todays standards or probably even the turbo six , but still a good no fuss quick cruiser .

Was only suggesting last week you feature some XDs or Es and here they are...and then some! Good on you Glenn...you've done it again! Yeah mate - can't help thinking "what if" had Dick gone down the route of homologating the Grand Prix. And considering how bulletproof that old 250 workhorse was it would only have been a matter of turning up the wick if she wasn't keeping up with the opposition on race day! But as you said he was still a relative battler back then and so he never had the factory backup or influence over Ford that Brocky had with Holden. Seeing how hard that Grand Prix went made me think twice about replacing the 250 in my XD with a Clevo...but only for a brief moment hah! Cheers Glenn...legend!

Thought of you when I uploaded this and glad you jumped on it. We'll be featuring more of his XD and XE collection sooner than later too. Yes, I reckon these cars would have been a powerhouse in Group A race trim, it's a big engine and cubes plus a big snail hanging off the side usually ends up being a positive. But, it'd be damn hard to match factory support with all the R&D side of things. :-)

@@GlennEverittMasterofMachines it would have made a fairly ordinary Group A car would have been in the 5500cc and over weight class with 13" wide tyres and a min weight of 1400kg so even if it had bulk grunt it would have chewed through tyres and brakes and in endurance races would have needed loads of fuel stops for fuel.

4.1X 1.4 is 5740ci and 1.7 near 7 litre. So with whatever equivilancy they used it was too big a capacity. A turbo 200ci ends up 4620. But would the short stroke 200 do the job? And stay together. They do rev far freer than the 4.1. Close ratio single rail would be ok but the diff and axles probably not. efi XE 4.1 is a LOT more than a 150hp 111kw for the carby engine with 325nm of torque. EFI engine is far sharper and quicker than a 302 XE over the quarter. V8 XD XE Falcons were 12mpg asthmatic pigs. Fit an XB camshaft and they are immediatly far better. Block off the egr and the heat passage under the carb and probably retune the carb extensively and then you have a nice engine Though IF you do that fit a mild cam, Performer intake and a better carb and it will be better again. The XA XB engines had no real faults and did not wear out like the later ones either. XCs are not great but the XD XE V8s simple had the valves burrow up the ports and wore the shit out of the guides. And left top ring marks as well. Earlier engines did not ever do that

A mate had a GTR not an XU1 but well sorted and the Friday night 1/4 mile on Leeton Rd was a good money spinner for him against the HO’s and Monaro’s. Always thought a turbo Cortina 6 would put the cat amongst the pigeons, never did anything about it....same old same old, shoulda, woulda, coulda! Will say this though, had the best engine builder on the planet in that town...Mario Barbagello-Maverick. Died in a HT Holden with the owner Paul Panabianco testing an engine rebuild on Lavender bend just out of Griffith. Both gents were doing what they lived for....

actually, to be eligible for racing under FISA Group A regulations a manufacturer needed to make a minimum of FIVE THOUSAND base models in a calendar year, in other words 5000 4.1 turbo falcon four door sedans. To make the car more competitive and more suitable for racing a manufacturer or it's delegated representative could make (again a minimum of) FIVE HUNDRED SPORTING EVOLUTION models, like with the VK Group A blue meanie. This is why it never came to fruition, Ford Australia in the early mid eighties were not interested in performance and were officially not supporting manufacture racing, and in no way were going to make 5000 turbo falcons with out intensive testing, and DJ simply ran out of time and had to go the Mustang route i.imgur.com/6rystOm.jpg

SMH , or imagine if the TD Cortina had descent brakes now That car would have been a giant killer and left XU1's in its dust id take a Ford 250 six over a Holden 202 anytime the torque and the reliability of the 250 were amazing , Ford should of brought in the crossflow heads much much sooner and industry around them could of been made , i grew up in and area where a guy had a 250 TD cortina that was Turboed no wastegate either!! That was some awesome accelerating car the massive G force that thing could create was incredible , i don't know how many diffs he blew but that thing would smoke up the tyres for well over 2 telegraph poles lengths , im sure he could tell you a story or two about what he did it in

I bleed blue, and never knew that these Grand Prix models were Turboed!!! OMG! Its taken me near 30 years to learn this. The only other thing they forgot to improve on the Grand Prix was the steering wheel!!!! They needed a smaller sporty wheel to make it at least feel better in your hand, unlike the standard bus sized stock steering wheel they had, exact to the base model GL XE Falcon of the same year. The Fairmont ghia got a nicer steering wheel! I think they missed a trick Dicky & FoMoCo, but overall, what a silent beast!

As a 70 years young bloke I wonder if any of you have had the pleasure (?) of being in a steel head 4•1 crossflow xc falcon fitted with a super charger. The one I punted around for a short while was a 36k mile station wagon. Very interesting on the corners if you forgot about the supercharger. 😁.

Xe's and Xf's are lightweight falcons compared to newer ones, very light. Makes sense a straight 6 turbo would be very quick.

Back in the late 80's at an Auction in Melb, two xf silver Faimont Ghia's Falcons went under the hammer, bankruptcy, one had a single turbo the other a twin turbo.I ended up speaking to the man who built them, I think he said he was hoping to get ford backing to produce similar models.Didn't happen he went under,I ask him about the performance of the cars,he told me they had got the twin turbo up to 180mph.be interest what happened to them.

As a kid in the 80s , the letters V8 and Turbo were eye catching. I remember my dad owned an XD panel van that he put headers and cams on, even the old 4.1 without a turbo in the early 8s wasn’t slow for its time :) this car with a Turbo 4.1 would have insulted most cars back then! Torque is king :). low down punch is so much fun!

Yep, I was going to buy an exa turbo in the 90s , just didn’t have enough money to get a good one :) I did however buy my dream turbo AWD pocket rocket Nissan GTIR, that was fun :) now I’ve gone electric and the torque is phenomenal, but I’d love an old XD !

Try buying new tyres for these old cars now. There's nothing in 14 inch, and only BF Goodrich in 15 inch. They sell nothing that actually has grip. I'm having similar issues with my Escort on 13x7's, Cortina on 14x7's and Falcon on 14x8/14x10.

The did not come out meth and water injected at all, it was all super and unleaded was just about to hit the market, which is why it went to group A and no other reason, due to the fuels used at the pumps ie: super ,which unleaded came out thus cats as well? they make out like this is 500hp and 500NM of torque as well, when in fact it really had just as much power as the 351's did a little more around 160KW that's it and massive turbo lag as well, full stop? What ever happened to channel 31 and your XY GT ford freak show ,gone way off the charts hey mate, lol:)
