Aside from their go fast build and on road presence , i think these old cars even in standard form where very good cruisers and fantastic highway cars as long as your wallet was full enough to pay for the fuel bill . Had an immaculate XR GT in the early eighties in Sydney. Did a few runs to Melbourne in it, before the speed restrictions we have now & just sit on 100/110 mph no sweat - great hwy cruiser. Had a set of Cooper exhausts on it & that 289 sounded superb - girlfriend at the time said she could here me coming 3 blocks away. Sadly it was written off by a woman running up my arse whist stationary doing a RH turn on the Windsor road. But once I got my GT fix went on to get an XT & later an XW GT but still have a soft spot for the XR's. Must say that XR in this video is superb - a real credit to the owner.

@@weldmachine Interestingly I bought the wreck from the insurance company & it was sold to a panel shop in Sutherland. I don't know if they planned to re shell it or what happened to the vehicle. It also copped a hit in the front as the rear impact shunted the car head on into coming traffic - so it was well & truly stuffed. I was in the GT car club in Melbourne for many years & the club would not recognize re shelled vehicles unless they were GT shells as genuine GT's.

Were the 390 and 427 FE big blocks ever factory installed in Australian Fords?
@KG84C7 ай бұрын
No, locally made inline 6s ranging from 144 to 250 cid, imported Windsor's 289, 302, 351. Cleveland imported till early 70s, then produced locally at Ford Australia engine plant in Geelong, Victoria. Last one made about 1983. We also had a 302 version of the Cleveland as a sort of "econo" V8. All small port heads but mid 75 both 351C and 302C got factory 4 barrel Thermoquad, and the dreaded EGR. Google "Bill Bourke 428 Falcon", it appears the Ford Aust managing director had a one off big block made, sadly auto box. FE, forgotten engine.

To my knowledge they were all imported here. We did cast our own Clevelands though. We phased the Windsor out by about 71 and then went with the Cleveland from there on through to 83/84. @johnniethepom29054 жыл бұрын
@@Starlight_GT its blipped on the down change to help match the lower gear revolutions to the road speed of the tyres . It puts enormous strain on the drive train components if not executed precisely. On the contrary the up change need the engine revs reduced to allow a smooth gear change again avoid excessive wear on clutch , gearbox , prop shaft and differential . The first component to fail with repeated up revs on an up gear change would almost certainly be the clutch . Mind you 650 hp is going to tear most drive trains apart if not driven with a mechanical sympathy.
