Hey fellas, guess what? It ain’t easy but got it off. Using WD40 and Kobalt 24v impact driver. This video was helpful in that the screw turns clockwise to remove. No help from Kobalt service call nor Lowes store. This video did the trick. Thank you.

Thanks, Phil! There's another Kobalt 80V model that utilized an Allen wrench to stabilize the bolt, but my trimmer is just like yours -- which needs the flathead screwdriver. Now, to figure out how to fasten this Shakespeare Push-N-Load 3 Blade head since the threaded shaft cannot be locked...

Thanks. Really helped getting the head off Kobalt 2580-06 trimmer! Did anyone viewing this video find a good replacement head for this model? Tried one universal one but it wasn’t threaded to fit on threaded screw of the trimmer. Would appreciate knowing where a replacement head that fits on the model kst 2580-06 can be found.

I have one of the heads without the flat head screw on top. The trimmer was some sort of “Special Edition” for Lowe’s. While it looks like an Allen head on there instead, it isn’t. It took me a while to figure it out, but you can’t take that bolt out on our models: instead, you have to flip the trimmer over and find the little hole in the metal on the other side of the head. If you slide something in there (I used an Allen wrench) and spin the head, the wrench will slip farther into the mechanism at one point, which locks it in place so that you can unscrew the head by hand.

Thanks Phil! I had some trouble until I held the screw motionless with a screwdriver (I used a vice grip on the screw driver for leverage) and then tapped the flange where the cover snaps into the head tangentially with a hammer to get it started (so the housing spins counter clockwise). The hammer boke it loose right away.

So you rotate the head counter clockwise and the screw clockwise? I'm confused because his hand was blocking the screw. My screw is stripping more and more each time I try. Is that because I'm trying to loosen it by turning the screw counter clockwise??

Success! I'm giving the bolt loosener the credit --although it was still tough. I left it on there for about an hour and tried again. It was similar to a "normal" very tight nut or screw -- twisting the screw to the right and unit to the left.

The threads are M10-1.25 pitch right hand The Echo Speed Feed 400 Universal kit will work if you can tap one of the metal adapters. It has to be the universal because you need the white insert for the bump feed to work properly Removing the head is the hardest part. I used a racket with a straight screwdriver bit. I would agree spraying some PB Blaster or other solvent on the top. There was some thread lock on it Search Kobalt 80v and seed feed 400 for the video.

If your trimmer is a Black 80 Volt, it is left hand threaded. CW spin it to take the driver head OFF and use the locking hole and Allen Wrench trick. This trimmer above takes a Lowes special order item #2098003 SINGLE molded SPOOL AND BUMP KNOB newer integral single unit. If your trimmer is a Blue 80 Volt, it is right hand threaded. It CCW spins OFF and has a locking screw as shown in this video. The Blue trimmer does not use the Lowes #2098003 replacement "spool". "large bolt with nothing to unscrew"? I think you mean the Driver Head has an aluminum threaded looking recessed left hand threaded nut with no way there it is tapped for another screw like in this video. If the date on the battery holder is before 2019, it's an all black Kobalt KST-140XB-06 accessory capable type trimmer. Left hand threaded. After about 2019, the trimmer plastic parts are BLUE and is likely a KST-2580-06 unit. HTH, Stefan

Still working on this despite seeing the video. I am turning the screw right and the spool left. Can't budge it yet. Looks like it has some blue Loctite on it -- but that isn't supposed to be too tough. Put some bolt loosener on it and it is sitting while I look for a giant flathead screwdriver so I can get some good leverage and not ruin the screw head. Any help would be appreciated.

Screwslot got mangled from impact driver but managed to remove head. I filed down threads to clean up damage then tried putting on new Kobalt head which was sold as correct replacement for 80 volt units and wouldn't you know the new head has left hand threads but shaft is right hand threads! Lowes/Kobalt is a disappointment for parts. I have 4 80 volt units but i think i will eventually replace all these with a real tool brand such as Stihl or even Husqvarna now that this 80V technology is widespread. Lowes is useless for knowledgeable customer support. Greenworks makes many of the Kobalt tools btw.

Dude! Stock head is a total Toy!! What a POS.. Hard to believe they did this. Burnt out my first Gen 1 80V with a Pro big boy head using huge string. Wow this trimmer is a beast!! even speed 1 was brutal w/ twin 21" big string giving 4 cutting edge. Will take out most any gas powered Trimmer if it has a Pro Head.. Took a while to burn it out.. overheated.. BUT!!! The top part of the stock head is a centrigugal fan.. you have to keep that part of the old head. Thinking cut the top fan part off, and adapt what's left. Now I have a Gen 2 80V... trying to get that to work w/ maybe a semi Pro head and medium string.. Why doesn't anybody just make a head that fits this fine trimmer, and includes the cooling fan function??
