81hp to 115hp! - Shop Talk Episode 4 - 114ci High Compression Gear Drive Cam

In this latest Shop Talk, Jamie and Mike go over a recent build where we installed a 114ci High Compression Gear Drive Cam Piston Kit for the Milwaukee Eight Motor. At the end of the install we had increased both Torque and Horsepower from stock 102tq/81hp to 123tq/115hp. A list of parts used are featured below:

142 horsepower 106 Twin Cam is what I ride. Reliable and will live long with 4 3/8" stroke. Not a fan of increased piston speed with big strokers. I built it using S&S crankcases, heads, and cams. 55mm HPI throttle body, and 625 cams. 10.8 compression ratio. Happy with it.

1:15 "relating in...we don't want to go, we don't want to talk about that" LoL! Everyone knows but the Harley gods will be angry with you if you mention it. I was going to get woods 222 or SE204 cams because I forgot about the tensions. I don't want to go back in there if I don't have to plus "1:04 ...because tensions tension" I might be able to push the engine just that little bit more with the geared cams. Well worth the $200 difference. I just hope my crank shaft runout is in spec and my gear lash is right off the bat.

The M8's are pretty tight engines and more often than not are in spec. If the lash is out there under/oversize gears available. HDCS has them in stock.

Enjoyed the video. My question to you is, with this direct gear drive for the camshaft. How do you eliminate the "Whine", if too tight, or how do you eliminate the "Chatter" if too loose. In short creating a quiet running efficient engine. I like the idea of the direct drive, but if it makes noise...what good is it? Just asking. It's a well known problem with this new M8 engine with problem of oil system once we do upgrades with the upper ends. Seems like the stock system cant keep up with the increased power from the big bore kits. Am I correct in saying the new fuel pumps/Cam Plates from S&S and Feuling have eliminated the issue with Sumping? Thanks!

The noise is very slight if any. We have installed a lot of them. The "sumping" issue has been blown way out of proportion by our friends trolling the forums/KZbin. There is nothing wrong with the stock oil system or tensioners. However, there are upgrades for them just as there are for all motorcycle/car manufacturers that have modification history. I like that gear drive set up. But I hav heard that the M8 is not uncommon for them to have over 5-6 thousands of runout. Is that something that you guys see? I’m wanting to do the gear drive but I don’t want a noisy motor or for the gears to eat themselves. What’s your thoughts on the gear drive VS chain?

Joe Vandivner We hardly have one that doesn’t spec out for the gear drive setup. I would say you info is inaccurate. If we where talking twin cam your comment would be correct.

Since Harley got rid of the roller bearing what happens when the crankshaft starts running out of spec to those gears?

The gears actually help the bottom end maintain it's specs. The gears hold the movement of the crank in check.

hey moonshine I got a question I have a road king classic 2008 and I want to change the spark plug cable do I have to take off the gas tank or what do I do I want to put the 10mm new cable. thanks.

If you can get in there between the tank and rocker box you don't have to do anything. Sometimes it's easier though if you unplug the fuel line, remove the bolts on the tank and just lift it up a little.

Not really with stock mufflers but our 2-1-2 headpipe uses stock heatshields and isn't real loud so it looks stock. We are building what we call "highway sleeper" buds all the time with up to 150tq! Alot of the nitty gritty is on my Instagram @m.v.o_motorfast

I know the run-out is very important when choosing gear driven cams, and yes the run-out may be ok right now but what about in the future when the crank runs out of spec, because let's be honest when we build our bikes for power we will naturally as men beat the living crap out of our bikes in the name of fun Wich we all know will put the cranks out of spec. So wouldn't it be a good idea to have the crank welded and trued before considering gear drives?

Great Videos! I got a 475G camchest kit. I put the cam gear on today and it appears to pressed the cam into the bushing in the S&S camplate. It will rotate, but I can move it with my hands like you did in this video...it's alot tighter in the camplate. Is that normal for a S&S set up? Thanks

What happens when you you start loosing your crankshaft bearing tolerances over time with this set up :

Actually the gear drive setup helps maintain the crank shaft tolerance due to the nature of it's design. That is a big reason it is critical to achieve initial.runout tolerances.

Using the dial indicator that far offset from the actual movement will give you pretty inaccurate results.

It doesn't matter where the indicator is. It is a precision instrument. As long as the indicator is stationary it will be accurate. You can ensure it is stationary when it always returns to 0.

I think "Catastrophic engine failure " was the words you were going to speak. Checked my tensioner shoes a few years ago and one was worn to the metal base. Had gear drives installed. Stupid engineering. "We'll just let the customer deal with it since the warranty will be out."

duane howard not necessarily. Granted you lose the Harley warranty but there are aftermarket warranties that cover specific upgrades like this. My dealer was the one who told me about it. They sell such a warranty. My warranty expires in September so this winter I’m putting a different cam in it.

I feel like I've lived too long. Having been on a Harley for 51 years. It seems like Harleys Reinventing the wheel. I understand that the aluminum cylinders are great for heat dissipation but I don't like to for head bolts that doesn't work well for high performance. We never had cam chains on our cam we always had a Gear Drive. My 74 Shovelhead hot motor had more 115 horsepower. Solid lifters shovelheads. My current Shovelhead chopper lifts the wheel and second and third no problem. I know what Harley ought to do get rid of all this stupid chains reinvent the Shovelhead get 5 head bolts going on each head get some solid lifters going maybe some water jackets I like that's a good idea they're on the right track. But stop Reinventing the horsepower game it's been done pick up a book read. The current bikes are better bikes. But we had better technology in the 70s. What you guys are doing is melting the two and that's good. But hardly has to stop doing stupid stuff on their bikes. Cam chains oh my God. Old guy talking. I'll keep my shovel to Harley gets it right.
