I was the king of scratches. They literally stopped putting me on jumps because like 3/4 of my jumps were scratches. I remember being near the door after they circled the DZ three times; finally got the yellow light and they scratched it. After like 8 hours, Green Ramp and all that bullshit. My CSM told me he'd never jump with me again. His loss.

As a retired paratrooper, I remember my first jump in a T10 parachute out of a C119. Col. Welch (seen in the movie Green Berets) was driving around the drop zone in his Jeep checking on his student jumpers. My parents viewed my first jump and them attended my Jump School graduation. Good luck to all members of the 82nd Abn Div. Love you all.

My drafting teacher from 71st high school in Fayetteville was in the beginning of the movie. Mr Nielsen was the Danish speaking soldier. My dad's A team was in Georgia and offered to be extras in the film but they said that they had enough extras, so they sat on the hillside and laughed at the Hollywood version of their job.

hey man, you might not see this in time, im 18 and got slotted for airborne in my contact, i leave on the 10th for BT and i’m not worried at all i’m worried about jumping out that damn plane lol, my main worry is jumping out and then spinning out of control. how was your first jump? can you describe the feeling when you were next in line to jump out the door
@schellman8482
@schellman8482 Жыл бұрын
@JustJJ You probably haven't jumped yet if you left for basic 2 months ago because you're either in OSUT or at AIT, but it's not that bad. Airborne School is a 3 week course and weeks 1 and 2 all you do all day everyday is practice jump procedures, jumping, parachute control and landing (and running, alot of running). You'll get good at it just pay attention and put in the effort. As long as you perform a good exit you won't spin out of control, and in the video, you saw the risers tangled around a little bit and they'll teach you how to fix deficiencies like that before you jump like how the paratrooper in the video did. The only hard part is doing that first jump but that's all you. You'll be scared, heart racing and all that, and a little bit of fear is healthy and normal, if anything it keeps you alert and ready to perform to your best. You just gotta jump. You'll do fine bud, and the more scared you are to do it the more proud of yourself you'll be when you do do it, as well as surprised and happy when you see how fun it is.

The new chutes (T-11s) are actually better. It took some getting used to but it’s more responsive. It gets untwisted much faster when you bicicycle kick in the air and it doesn’t oscillate nearly as much and it doesn’t take much of a pull on the risers to stop the oscillation. I can also control the rate of descent a lot better. My best PLFs are with the T-11 Now because it’s more maneuverable in the air and more responsive with the various riser tugs, you get a lot of dumbfuck wild paratroopers who sky shark across the sky much more quickly and dangerously than they did with the T-10. With the T-11s, I learned to cut away from everyone as soon as I could, even if it meant adding another 10 minutes of walking to the assembly area. There was always some dumb idget doing stupid shit in the air. My airborne philosophy is this: you’re buddies on the plane. You’re buddies on the ground. But you’re not buddies while you’re in the air. I never had a person run into me in the air and get tangled up in my chute or steal my air and cause me to free fall but if those things ever did happen to me, I would have made that paratrooper pay dearly

I heard "oh shit!" and looked up in time to see shadows of two people walking across the top of my chute... 🤪 they both popped reserves, but both failed. they came down on two half collapsed canopies like a sack of wet mud. SPLAT! Knocked the wind out of em, but they were fine.
@youtubecommenter37
@youtubecommenter37 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the exit. If you have a strong, L-shaped exit and the winds are reasonable, you shouldn’t be twisted up. But sometimes the winds are harsh and you get twisted up anyway. Paratroopers are trained to check for that right away once the chute deploys. You pull the risers apart and bicycle kick as fast as you can. That causes the chute to untwist

When you have 100's (or more!) troops in the sky at once, you DON'T want the forward speed and rapid turns that a "modern" parachute allows... nor do you want to be hanging there all day hoping the enemy will follow the conventions of war and not start shooting until you are all on the ground. I feel like you know this, and I have just fed a troll, but what else do I have to do at 0323?

Maybe they should camouflage the canopies of the parachutes dark olive green and black for night jumps, where they wouldn't be nearly so visible as the paratroopers descended to solid ground. If they weren't sure if they were going to jump in daylight of the dark of night it shouldn't be too much trouble to have the option of light colored or camouflaged canopies. It might save a few lives.

I tried to share this VIDEO on my Facebook and it disappeared. I can't try to share the goodness of the Army if my videos disappear. I'm sure someone is hacked into my phone and has been for a very long time. I reported it. But, it is still doing things without my permission.

I remember my 82nd welcome to Ft. Bragg meeting in 1983. LTC Nick Rowe taught us the HOOOOOOOOAH! sound. Jumped T-10's from C130's and a few C141B stretched starlifters for a few years then they started SAAR and -1B training from UH1H Iroquois . Do not recognize this chute in the video.
