The most epic glider flight of my 3 days flying adventure. You feel like a tiny bird in-between the huge mountains. Passing the Kitzsteinhorn and Hintertuxer glacier - two stunning ski areas in Austria. Only with the power of nature!

It is really interesting to see how he turns into the updraft to swoop up along it. Also what a cool experience to hear only the wind whip over your aircraft as you fly (aside from the constant whine of the variometer).

@@n16161 i never knew they filled the wings with water for ballast either. Is there no issue with the water freezing in this environment then?
@bruh-vy1he
@bruh-vy1he 2 жыл бұрын
well it depends from the environment you are flying . For example in a hill or mountain there are spots of hot air that cause you to gain height .
@n16161
@n16161 2 жыл бұрын
@@joemay6907 I think that they do not have to worry about that for a single-day flight when the ballasts are filled just before flying. For the amount of time spent at the freezing temperatures, that is such a large mass of water (that is sloshing around) that you likely do not have to worry about freezing being an issue. However, if you are dumping water in those low temperatures, you might potentially have to worry about the drain valves freezing up.

I was as teenager only pilot of RC glider ... I suppose that's exactly the kick u get fro m doing it. It's a mental challenge to master, and with every flight, you extend your skills. It never gets boring. Now Iam professional sailor, and still it's the same feeling to understand weather and navigate distances of thousands of miles ctossing trans continental oceans without an engine. Just remember, that gliding or sailing depends on seasonal conditions, so knowing about these princips by mother nature and geographical conditions is a steadily learning process. It's fun and a challenge.

That was so relaxing. It really was. It made me feel like I should have tried this. I have flown a 150 and a Piper Cub solo, and flown with many friends. But never a glider. You made me so comfortable with what you were doing - circling in thermals, accruing height when you needed it, and then flying so close the mountains, and such beautiful scenery. Thank you Stefan. That was outstanding flying.

People who fly gliders are truly special... no engine, solely rely on their skills for reading wind patterns. Incredible, I know I couldn't do it. It's crazy how you find the pockets of warm air rising and use that to elevate. Insane. Just insane.

You can imagine the glider sliding done a "slope of air" - the angle of this slope is defined by the configuration of the wings, so a glider has a very flat/gradual slope. And a heavy glider will glide down that "gliding slope" faster than a lightweight glider. Similar to a heavy car which rolls down a hill faster than a lightweight car. Of course you can empty the water tank during flight if you don't need it anymore.

Thanks, Thomas! For a WeGlide story it is easier to take pictures with a camera or a smartphone. The timestamp of the photo will be associated to the flight track automatically. When I record videos I can make screenshots of the footage but the timestamp is not accurate or not available. The workload for me to record a video story, comment some parts of the flight and -focus on flying- is already at my personal limit. Also the video editing, creating a thumbnail and publishing of such a video takes me several hours up to one day. I will need to find a way to speed up this process and also improve my WeGlide story ;)

Thanks, Johan! Perhaps other pilots would have been faster aswell ;) Every time I´m in the Alps with my glider, I´m blown away by the scenery and how cool it is to fly there.

Awesome vids :) Me as a glider student pilot (with around 14h in air 17 years old) these films help me a lot when it comes to learning flying in a thermal conditions. It would be great to see you talking more about technical things like searching for thermals ect. Waiting for a new series :)

Thank you :) For me it is also difficult to explain what I´m doing there and not everything what I´m doing is perfect. But I will try to films some more educational content in the future.

@@SteFly You really should give it a go, Setfan. In my own experience (in other subjects) I have noticed that you actually get better at what you do when you are forced to go back to basics and think things through logically, in order to teach the subject to someone else. (It could be: Next step = Stefan the Gliding Instructor)

@@SteFly There are several points that could be useful for an educational video. If you talk what you are feeling, what are the indications that you expect. Often you wait way longer than i would, to start your turn. Also the audiovario lag seems quite high. Are you using thermal helpers, and if how? In these (great) videos you often you cut away before i expect a correction of a thermal center. I would say they are not very educational for a beginner like me and the student above. G. Dale describes the sensations that you should look for very well, i guess: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZvXaWqLbdaMeKM But this is without nice gliding footage/ live commentary. I am trying to achieve my Silver badge this season. ...i have done my 1st 100km 6 turnpoint declared task. Furthest point about 30km from home airfield. www.weglide.org/flight/70217

I always though that Bruno Vassel did a better job with flight footage and conveying the feeling of flying and you were always ahead when it came to everything on the ground (showing the glider inspection and explaining things). You made a huge leap with your flight footage these last few videos in my opinion. I love the longer cuts without music. Good work!

Stefan, thanks for 3 super videos. Did you manage to keep your water at the low point early on? Perhaps an overview of the total distance over the 3 days. Also some very low points spotted, please take care, we don’t mind if you land out safely!
@SteFly
@SteFly 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes I kept my water ballast at the first lower points and had it with me till the last 70 km of my flight. Without water ballast it is a completely other glider and it would have been hard to fly so far.

I am just looking into the glider (and for the future perhaps PPL) scene, and this looks so cool! I have absolutely no experience with flying, itself but played a lot of simulators and a study related to aerospace. How do the systems run? Is there just a battery inside the glider or does it uses something to charge?
@SteFly
@SteFly 2 жыл бұрын
I started with gliding and didn't want to make the PPL training. For me it is boring to just fly steight and spend a fortune for the fuel/ overhaul of the engine. 😂 But also to learn the basics of flying before the PPL , gliding is a great choice! The avionics run from two small LiFePO4 batteries with about 10 Ah @12V. For charging you take them out.
