850hp BMW M3 v 860hp Ford Mustang: DRAG RACE

It’s time for two tuned RWD monsters to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile!
First up we have Mat in an F80 BMW M3. Normally this would be powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six, however in this instance, the two turbos have been switched for one massive turbo, and as a result, it can produce 950hp and 1,100Nm of torque!
However, it can only hit that much power on a prepared surface while it’s rolling on drag slicks, and seeing as we have neither of them, the power has been dialled down to 850hp & 950Nm.
Next up we have the Mustang. Under the bonnet it’s powered by a 5-litre V8, however, this one has had a supercharger added to it, so the output is now 859hp and 902Nm!!
The BMW also has one key advantage over the Mustang - it comes with an automatic gearbox, while the Mustang is a manual!

Best piece of advice: when you launch the f80, it will keep upshifting for you until 3rd gear so if you shift, it will bog. Have it programmed for D3 and that thing will fly like a damn bird. Manually shifting i like it for the canyons, but straight line, D3 is a monster especially with a tune transmission.

thats because beyond a certain horse power level you really should have the xdrive system. whether front or rear the car will spin its wheels and rear wheel drive has even less traction than front wheel. I think the mustang would lose to awd bmw

I’ve owned both of these (stock), currently in the F80. I cannot imagine what doubling the output does to the traction issue, as the car wants to spin through 2nd and 3rd even in stock trim. The turbocharged torque spike makes its very difficult for the car to put the power down, where the 5.0’s linear power band allows torque to build gradually- aiding in traction. This went exactly how I thought it would, great video!

there is a really BIIGG improvement if you have the Comp version. The driving dynamics on the Comp are like a lightyear better. I have driven multiple non-comps and owned a 2016 speed yellow comp. Never had problems with putting the power down (MPS4) and on a wet track the car was incredibly good.

@@Tatts084 It has something to do with dampers, springs and anti-roll bars, that's for sure. I am not an expert. The drive is incredibly different especially in slippery conditions. On a 3,5 km track a difference of about 3 sec with same tyres. edit: and that's in dry conditions, in wet much bigger difference at least when I am driving 😄

@@Tatts084 So with a supercharged V8 the powerband is similar to a Naturally Aspirated car (linearly increasing power steadily all the way through the rev range) where you essentially get more power the more rev's you give it, and unless there is a restriction in the intake, exhaust or head (cams, valves, ports) the engine will make max power at redline (7000-8000rpm depending where you decide to set it). But with a turbo car like the M3 the car is almost naturally aspirated until the exhaust spools the turbo enough to create positive boost pressure against the engine. So most turbo cars with a larger size turbo to make 800+hp will make little power, then around 3000rpm the power will start to increase and it will hit that point where the engine is happy to start making lots of torque from the boost the turbo is supplying, which creates more exhaust gas, which spools the turbo even more. So suddenly the power will ramp up increasing very violently until just after max torque, where torque will start to decrease and the increase in power will start to slow down, eventually rolling over and power will start to decrease. Usually this is where you would put the rev limiter so you dont start to lose power while racing. The problem with this is the sudden surge of power to the wheels and spike is torque is very difficult for the tires to maintain traction. But essentially you have gone without power early on in the rev range and you want to bring it up to max power as soon as possible. Often it is faster to adjust your boost controller to bring the boost in more steadily over a thousand rpm instead of trying to hit max boost all at once. Doing this will create a more linear power delivery which is easier for the tires to maintain grip. But ultimately it's choosing the right size turbo and having the power dialed in as quick as possible, but also just slow enough that you can put the power to the ground and therefore be as fast as possible with the maximum amount of power being put to the ground at any given rpm and road speed. It takes a bit of time and effort, so most people just smash the boost in and try to manage the loss of traction with the pedal, often cooking the tires more often than racing.

Given the 1/4 times even with tcs issues I’d like to see some dynos for these cars lol. I had a 600whp C63 that ran 10.8 on street tires no prep. 🤷🏼‍♂️

An 850 hp car rwd don't do better 400m than a 650hp one..the 850 will put a train gap on half mile,1km or mile..400m in street it's no good for rwd cars at over 600whp

I wish Tom wrigley was behind the wheel of the M3, not only a tuner but he is a British racer, M3 is not something anyone can just handle. And traction fully off would have done better. Well done lads good video 📹 👏
