It’s time for another Germany vs USA showdown!!
Mat’s lined up in the Mustang Shelby GT 500, and alongside him, we have the oh-so-rare Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series! The question is, which will come out on top over the quarter-mile?
Well, let’s see how they compare! Starting with the Mustang, it’s packing a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 under the bonnet that can put down 760hp & 850Nm of torque. It drives the rear wheels only, and it weighs in at 1916kg.
As for the SLS, well it’s a whole lot lighter, tipping the scales at just 1,550kg! However, it’s down on power… It may be housing a 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 upfront, but it can ‘only’ put down 631hp & 630Nm. What’s more, just like the Mustang, its rear-wheel-drive only.
So what do you think - will the more powerful car be victorious? Or will the SLS snatch it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Would've been way more expensive if it weighed less. The Mustang has always been about offering thrills and a V8 at the lowest possible price, obviously the GT500 is a completely different beast but it doesn't stray that far from that mindset.

The Shelby GT500 carbon fiber track version is around almost 100lbs lighter than the base model which weighs 4,187lbs. The Shelby GT500 is heavy because it has 6 intercoolers, huge brakes, and a dual clutch transmission. Dual clutch transmissions add weight as well.

Interesting story: I was a salesperson for a Mercedes dealer just outside Detroit. A colleague said we had to go pick up a car from Edsel Ford II. I agreed to go. Out comes a 2012 SLS. I met the man also and he took me on a tour of his personal collection, which included two GTs, an original Lightning, Mustangs, etc.. We took pics together at the end. That was a great day! P.S. How he got the SLS was also a great story.

You can see how much hp means in this video. the mustang is as heavy as a truck but the extra 130hp makes that mean little when the car has traction and can put it down. SLS would smoke it with extra power.
