Where I am originally from, we call this game "swamp." The only differences are the fact that scores are kept, and some minor rule differences. Scores are determined by whether you're under or over. Everyone starts at 0, and anytime you're over, that gets added to the score. Anytime you're under, it gets subtracted. There's two rule variations. The 8-trick player has to call trump *before* card swapping, and swapping trumps is forbidden. In addition, it's possible for the 8-trick player to declare no trump, in which case, no card-swapping is allowed. However, if the 8-trick player does not make at least 8 tricks, the other player(s) have the right to swap double the amount the next game.

How are scores calculated ?

In this game you don't keep score. You play until you reach a round where any player wins 5 more tricks than they needed or 5 fewer than they needed. The winner is the player in that round who won the most tricks over what they needed

Ian Hibbert You see all your cards before calling because you need a lot of help to get 8 tricks. But you can try your way if you want it more difficult.

I play on PlayOk card games and you can only see 6 cards before making trump,no idea why.Ive asked but noone ever answers

I found there are rules for 3 5 8 in Wikipedia. It says there you see your 16 cards before naming trumps and then you pick up the 4 card kitty. They also say as a variation you can pick up the kitty first. I assume the PlayOk website must have different rules.
