The Quadrajet carburetors have always been my first choice for carburetors. I'm a retired GM mechanic and from my many years of experience, I've figured out that most people that call the Quadrajet carburetors junk, do not know how to adjust or work on the Quadrajet, I've only had one Quadrajet in my lifetime that could be considered junk, that was because the butterfly shaft on the front primary side was completely wore out, it was on a 1969 Chevy station wagon with a badass stock 350 engine that would flat out run like it had a high output engine in it.
@glennmanchester5696 Жыл бұрын
You guys are absolutely correct and if you have the carb that came on the engine it was born with especially Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles they were absolutely amazing but some guys would grab on off a 454 and stick it on a 305 and wonder why it just didn't seem to be absolutely perfect for that engine lol smells a little rich at idle the carb is junk gimme a POS Holley lol

@glennmanchester53352 жыл бұрын
If it bogs when the second aries kick in it's out of adjustment the air doors can be adjusted to change the time and how quickly they open there is a fine line there that I will admit the trick is this jump on the pedal w all the primaries but zero secondaries for about 15 to 20 seconds then stand on it maybe 10 seconds is the key you just have to give it a little bit to get the rpms at least off idle. And ready to take a big drink of gasoline at once I used to hold it in low till the rpms got about 2500 then stand in it and jump would be conservative it would break the back wheels loose when the secondaries kicked in with at least a decent chirp then it stayed toe into it till it shifted and snatched another three feet of rubber ...

That putty they put on the carb is a trick rebuilders use just over all the lead plugs because sometimes when the lead plugs get old they will leak and putting some epoxy or jb weld over them will seal them up for a while. It seems like a decent carb hopefully you won't have to mess with it again and just enjoy it.

I’m impressed. Being visually impaired, I used to hang around grandpa while he would work on his old vehicles. @ BowtieGuy601, what brand and type of intake manifold is on that engine? It looks like one of them cheaper in price intakes from China, so my main question is, did you have any problems with it mating up without any vacuum or coolant leaks? Wow every mechanic I've ever talked to said just the opposite that they are the best most longest running w out issues carbs on the planet I think the guys your talking to aren't really mechanics ...and are not going by experience with the q jets or if so say they suck because when they take apart a Holley they are the simplest most generic type of carb that love fuel a q jet has metering rods and is a bit more complicated but will use much less fuel than a Holley does

The engineers at Rochester spent a lot of time and money to make a great carb that will not only get really good mileage but also transision from primaries to secondaries smoothly if it doesn't someone has changed the settings or changed something to make it not work as designed. They perform on a performance stand point as well as any Holley will without having to spill gas all over the place changing jets I've only changed jets in a q jet once and it wasn't due to a lack of performance they only made two sizes 750 and 800 now how come every other carb manufacturer has to make a 500 600 750 850 etc ?? Due to the at the time an engineering marvel the secondary air doors coupled with secondary metering rods that only feeds the engine it's on the amount it needs and no more it works on engine vacuum the more cu inches of displacement means stronger vacuum signal thus opening the air doors further hense more fuel and air enters as I said there hasn't been nor will there be a carburetor made that's even close to the reliability and longevity you'll get from one the days of carbed engines are long past and one day will be not even considered a viable way to run an engine but for the time we used them the q jet ruled of course it's just my opinion and I always hated Holley and never felt any square bore kick like one or require less tinkering with so idk these mechanics you've spoke with obviously are intimidated by them because they are not a generic simple thing to work on I guess so maybe that is a reflection of the mechanical ability they actually possess ??
