Thank you for posting this video - and BTW, at 2:30 your camera is perfect, we can see the lever down inside the well. 👍 I'd like to add a couple more tips, because I'm trying to do this right now on a Buick 430 with the carb still on the engine - nobody wants to disconnect a QuadraJet fuel line if they don't have to - and of course I can't tilt the car 90° to help me get everything back together... 😉 For anyone also trying to avoid removing the carburetor, THE most important thing is to cover the air horn perfectly before you try to pull the clip off the top of the internal/upper choke rod... We don't want that thing going down into the engine! Another trick for getting the lever out of the well vertically is to hold a magnet (I'm just using a pen-type telescopic one) on the top of the disconnected upper choke rod to attract the loose lever down inside and pull it up and out. Well I'm back... To get the rod and lever combo back down the well and on to the choke shaft, without benefit of turning the carb on its side to keep the oval hole in the diagonal position, I used a stupid-simple trick: I laid the pull-off/fast-idle assembly on it side, with the upper choke rod temporarily connected, and lined it up with the vertical 'line' made by the big hole for the mounting screw and the indexing 'dimple' above it. Then I just used a single flat wrap of masking tape to hold the rod and lever at that angle. That allowed me to get the lever back down the well perfectly lined up to put the choke shaft through it and reattach that side assembly. The last step was to open the throttle, fully close the choke & release the throttle, and then fully cycle the choke by hand to break the tape loose.

Thanks for the video. Always wondered why choke would never work properly. Finally got my 1972 Corvette starting and running great from a cold start like it did new. Thanks again.

seriously though , It was together at one time already , it is made to fit keep a cool head and it will go together If you struggle or get frustrated , take a break and tinker with something else , then go keep trying ... it will fit

Is the rod always in that higher hole in the actuator? What is the 2nd hole below it for?
@QuadrajetPowerLLCАй бұрын
Yes, always in outer hole.

Is there any way to prevent the choke rod from popping off the lower piece so easily, like maybe some kind of small cotter pin or something?
@QuadrajetPowerLLC8 күн бұрын
no, they didn't have clips. You may need a new rod if your end is too short. We sell them at www.quadrajetpower.com

@QuadrajetPowerLLC When I posted that I thought the issue in the video was the one I had but I found it was connected. I've been tracking a different unrelated cold running issue, I had it running for about 30 seconds and kicked it off fast idle apparently too early which caused it to die. Then I tried to set the choke but it wouldn't set and it was hard to start and wouldn't stay running. After 30 minutes of settling down, the choke plate fell down on its own allowing me to set it and it started (but ran rough for some other reason). Is it normal for the choke to not be able to be set after it was running but not long enough to be warm? This is from a '78 Oldsmobile 403. I'm very very new to carburetors and trying to learn as much as I can, your channel and rebuilt kits have been helpful, thank you.

Quite a useful video for my E4MC which is on an '82 Toronado. Thanks! How about a video about how to change the secondary doors spring, by the way??
@marko784328 күн бұрын
CHANGE the air valve spring, or adjust it? I've never had to replace one, but of course there is the tiny flat blade screwdriver & Allen wrench combination.
@IvoPoblete28 күн бұрын
@marko7843 Change it bc my spring is all tangled up due to shady mechanics my grandpa took his Olds to back in the day.

I have a quadrajet rochester carburetor on my 327 small block chevy I ended up ordering a used carburetor off ebay and all numbers match. I watched Your video when I install this choke lever and and get it set up do I need to install a hose on passenger side of carburetor to operate the choke or how does that work
@QuadrajetPowerLLC8 ай бұрын
No hose needed for divorced choke carb. Choke element sits on intake and connects to carb with rod.

I have a 79 qjet. Choke rod does not use retainer or screw. Its bend just hooks up into the hole on the little adapter screwed into the end of the primary blade. Problem is the rod does not provide solid fit thus the connection has movement that translates to blade wiggle..... How to correct ? Pull secondary apart ? Or can i disconnect rod from it's lower attachment , free it then bend it..etc. Carb is on manifold. Thanks
@QuadrajetPowerLLC2 жыл бұрын
Most have some wiggle with the choke rod and connection to the choke flap. Many of the rod holes are slotted to allow some movement.

Looks like someone disabled the chock on my qjet Card has Been working ok until recently engine is stalling at random times fulls speed or any speed engine dies. Would this be due to the chock. Being disabled? Or something else? Replaced everything else that would be a cause. Fule pump. Distributer plugs etc.
@QuadrajetPowerLLC2 жыл бұрын
With choke disabled, make sure you tie open the primary choke plate so it can't close on top of carb. Fuel delivery or electrical could be issues, but rule out the easy things first.

helpful video thanks 👍👌🏻 i have a 1975 Buick skylark with a divorced choke the problem is that the choke does not open by itself when the engine is warm no matter how long i wait or how much i give it gas and it always start, stalls first. what could be the problem?
@marko784328 күн бұрын
If it was completely disconnected, the airflow would open it. Therefore, I'm thinking you've got a rusted or broken coil in the manifold, or some other physical jam.

If the choke flap won't close all the way manually, you may need to bend the rod some to make sure it will.

The rod end is so short and the fit is a little loose so it does not stay on. Thirty tries later and it keeps falling off during this process. Bad design.
