#86 Windows have arrived, Building a new Battery Box

I'm building a new battery box to better protect them against the cold in winter. I'm also installing a new system from Victron. Geppo has the windows ready brings them in his Panda 4x4.

This project, Martijn, story telling, brings so much joy to me. Please don't give up on what we call "dutch oven" cooking. This cast iron pot was an indispensable item on the early American frontier. Here, there were simply too many coals on the lid. The dutch oven adds so much to the ambiance of an outdoor event around the fire. Loved seeing Geppo's artful work and his beautiful dogs. Shout out to all the helpers. Thank you, Martijn for all.

There is also a recess for a thermometer between the lid and the pan to monitor the temperature. With more and less coals, you can manage the temperature of the Dutch oven.

But I don't understand why he doesn't lift the lid during baking, not wait until the very end when the pie is burnt. Lift the lid, check the pie, put the lid back for another 5 - 10 minutes. So soul-destroying after all the effort and ingredients have gone into the pie only to discover later it's pretty much ruined.

Apple pie! It was watching the episode when your parents were visiting and your mother made that epic apple pie that hooked me on your videos. I was so impressed that your mother could make a pie in such rustic conditions without all the bells and whistles of pastry making! When the pie was pulled out of the coals and the Dutch oven was opened, I literally exclaimed with amazement at such a delicious pie. Then, the next morning, the three of you sat stoically at the stone table, eating that mouth watering pie with your coffee… I expected to hear, “mom, this pie is great!” But it was so quiet until your mother said something like, “it cuts very well” - of course apple pie makers all dread a runny pie, so I know what she meant by that. Then she said something about the nuts… I would have been jumping up and down with joy at such a success! After seeing this remarkable episode, I went back to number 1 and watched all the others. Your mom’s pie made a Martijn fan of me. Every project undertaken with such care… So today, as soon as you started making the pastry I knew what you were up to. Apple pie just like Mom’s… But as soon as it went on those glowing hot coals I said out loud, “too hot!” But kudos to you for trying and eating it anyway. I’m sure when your oven is installed your pies will be as epic as your mother’s! Thanks for another great episode. Can’t wait for next week.

@@SuperLittleTyke Freshly laid eggs do not have the typical taste. The tasty aroma only develops in the first three days after laying. As boiled eggs, they are difficult to peel and the protein is very gritty and they are difficult to mix for baking because the white is still a solid lump around the yolk. Eggs are like wine, they get better as they age. Expect three to six days. For beaten egg white they should be at least a week old.

@@ws4860 I fried a freshly laid farm egg yesterday in butter and it was perfect. And if the white is still clumped around the yolk you can chop it with a knife and watch the white spread over the pan. Been doing it for years.

Put the batteries on a shelf. Keeping them off the ground will significantly help. Just 30cm off the ground will really help battery life.

Right, never put batteries on the ground. Also, if the temperature drops below freezing, the electrolyte in the battery will freeze and expand, which can cause the battery to crack or rupture. If the battery isn't fully charged, there's a risk of freezing at milder temperatures.

You might have to add something for the Winter for your Chickens too. They wont mind the cold as long as they stay dry and are protected from the Wind. But they will need high Energy feed (Raisins, Nuts, Oil and Vitamins ) and of corse the Water must not freeze. Also, and this might be a Problem, you might need to install some artificial Light, as they will need at least 12 hours of Light to eat enough. Their Crops only have that much Capacity. The white Chicken has a large Comb and Wattle that might in danger of Frostbite but I dont know what you could do about that.

Good choice on the windows, Martijn...I know there are ups and downs to every project (I was so looking forward to seeing them in and the shower window is really gorgeous) but when those are done they are going to be so beautiful and you will love them every day that you see them. I could see through your posture that you were disappointed. It will work out. The seedling mat solution is an extremely good choice (I use seedling mats every spring to start my garden and all my exotics and I wouldn't have thought of that one). I think I would have made myself a battery cellar (using the natural temperature of the soil to insulate against cold. Here the average temp of the soil is a consistent 55 degrees F (12.7 degrees C) which makes root cellaring (keeping cheese, veg, fruit and wine) perfect. I know they do the same in your region because I watch a yt channel that specializes in keeping alive ancient traditions that are just over the mountains to the West of you in both France and Spain. It is hilarious that you tell your chickens to "Come"...and they do it! 😂 Why is there always one that refuses to use the perfectly good nesting boxes? Before your next video my Bresse chickens will hatch and I will be up to my ears in little fluff balls.

Hi Martin I not sure that the cabinet insulated with installed inverter and battery in the same place is a good solution. The inverter must be ventilated to reduce its temperature: if there is not any air vent in the cabin the system could shut down for overheating. During the winter this problem could be mitigated by the external low temperature but during the spring / summer the problem can arise. The second point is the battery could produce gas during its functiong, typically during the charge phase; and also in this case is suggested an air vent. Some time is used a fan that is controlled by the charge state to reduce the presence of the gas. Last suggestion using a cheap thermostat and a resistor (normally used in electric cabinet to keep the cabinets warm) you can keep the cabinet and battery over the minimum temperature required by the producer. Please check with your provider of the devices. 😁 any way you are doing a really impressive job

Question is the window glass for the shower area have a reflective outer tint. That makes it so you can’t see in that much. I noticed that on your friends window or door at his house. But from the inside it’s like a regular view. I have that on my sliding glass door I love it!

I’m watching this on Tuesday afternoon because my sweet wife and I went to Turin (from the Ligurian region) for the first time in 6 Italy vacations in 9 years. We walked quite a lot, 6 miles the first day and 9 miles the second day and enjoyed the city very much. The temperatures were reported to 22F degrees above normal in the Piedmont region so it was HOT for this Maine/Pacific Northwest boy but we’re on vacation so EVERYTHING is better than working! My wife knows I’m fully addicted to your videos and we intend to buy property here in Italy… she loved the farmlands surrounding Turin and we often looked up into your mountains wondering if it were cooler up there. While I doubt we are up for the exceptional challenge you have taken on, we will be patiently watching and waiting for the opportunity to be your (paying) AirB&B guests at some point in the future. Martin don't put so many coals on the top of your Dutch oven and rotate your lid and your pot! Your effort is so commendable because cast iron on an open fire is an art! I love watching Kent Rollings on KZbin! I've learned a lot!! Love you so much!!😘❤️👍

God, I love watching the chickens free, enjoying the meadow, and following you. Looks like the egg production is up. The night scene with you walking between the cabins was spectacular. The color of your egg yolks is fantastic. Such a deep yellow, they're almost orange. SO fresh! An easy way to move a pie crust is to fold it in quarters, move it to the pan, and then unfold it. How exciting to have a better battery system AND new windows all in the same week! Looks like you'll be warm this winter - that will feel good.

You should consider building a “mini cellar” for your battery system. It will be insuleted from freezing and also during summer from overheating. On a hilly land like yours should not be problem.

You control the temperature of the oven by how many coals you put on top. 3 shovel fulls is too many. May about half a shovel full, spread around evenly. And you can check it after 15 minutes and close it back up again if you want.
