In the word sword, the w is not pronounced, but it does turn the o into a diphthong, it becomes u-o, as one vowel: suord. It doesn't sound like sord.

Honestly don’t ever hear people pronounce status as you said is ‘correct’. I always hear it with a short ‘a’. Also didn’t agree with niche. And for brands I would say go with the pronunciation of the country it came from - we Americans pronounce Adidas wrong so I would go with how it’s supposed to actually be pronounced. A fun one for you to pronounce is pralines - a sweet treat. In Louisiana and surrounding areas they pronounce it praw-leens, but others say pray-leens. So even within the US you’ll find words pronounced differently.

Very good examples! But even US native speakers struggle with English words that come from foreign languages. Case in point: Entrepreneur. It comes from French meaning "one who undertakes" (a project, business venture.) In America it is often pronounced "entre-pre-noor" because the "eu" sound doesn't exist in English. "Eu" should be pronounced like the "ir" in "circle". Alternatively, say "neur" like "nerd" without the d at the end. Or the er sound as in "early". So "entre-pre-nEr" instead of "entrepre-noor." Another difficult one is "connoisseur" which is pronounced quite differently : connAisseur. What's more, these pronunciations may be different in different parts of the US. You'll hear "Uh-merica" instead of "America."

Marina, you did a superb job but… So many parts of the US, so many fascinating dialects… New England, Southern, Midwestern, etc…. Also, there are awesome ethnic nuances of the spoken language. You teach your Californian pronunciation of words calling it the “American English.” Why? Did you know, for example, that the folks living in Greenwich Village (NYC) speak the easiest-to-understand language? Did you know that a native Minnesotan calls a “can of soda” differently from his/her Texan counterpart? I suggest drilling more deeply into the beautiful diversity of the American English language. It’s a fabulous journey! Perhaps in one of your future advanced courses? Good luck!
