Such Awestruck talent is Billy. I’ve owned every album beginning with CSH in 1971. Even his early and later unreleased works of art are masterpieces. Thank you for blessing us with so much beautiful music that will stand the test of time.

I love how the sound quality makes the piano sound like it’s underwater. It fits the song really well

Have this on a cassette of demos. Wish they had remastered it on his My Lives boxed set. Would have been great on Cold Spring Harbor.

It is so sad that this wasn’t on cold spring harbor where it belongs or on a later album as a bonus song or something

if i'm thinking of the right song it is on it, it's Nocturne's Original Lyrics before he took them out and made it an instrumental

This is so beautiful, I really wish he put it on his album. I still don't understand why he hated his first album.

He didn't hate the songs on it. He hated that it was produced at the wrong speed which made everything sound "off".

@@WheelzOfFortune True. But I don't care, still a underrated gem to me.

In fairness although there in nothing wrong as such with the songs on Cold Spring Harbor and they were all pleasant enough, there were probably only two standouts and those were "Everybody Loves You Now" and "She's Got a Way" with perhaps "Nocturne" without lyrics a third.

@Owen Franklin Billy writes the vast majority of his songs bar the odd extra cover track on hits albums or guest appearances and he tends to write the music first and then adds lyrics to them later. This musically sounds a bit like Tomorrow Is Today from Cold Spring Harbor from 1971and sometimes with Billy, a complete song can be formed from earlier written parts of other songs that as full songs themselves never get completed or end up being discarded in order to become part of another full song. So maybe that is happened here and this song or the feel or parts of it ended up as Tomorrow Is Today.

While this an alright song by casual standards, by Billy Joel standards this belongs in the trash. Even if it had good production and arrangement, the melody just isn't strong enough. This is a good example of the crap great songwriters have to get out of the way to make way for the truly great songs. Very cool to get to hear it!

Before trashing one of the legends of our time, remember how old he was when he wrote this. Please post your music here for everyone to hear as I'm sure you've sold more than 150 million albums..

You may be right that this does not stand up to some of Billy's best songs (NY State of Mind, Miami 2017, Vienna, etc.) but it is certainly as good as some of the early material that wound up on Cold Spring Harbor and it is interesting from a fan perspective to hear what Billy was writing at the time when he was young and developing his style.

Billy doesn’t write to make hits or to impress anyone. He’s a composer and expresses his art. Period.
