Yes it was. It was devastating. It's the German Air defense which is overrated IMO. Still good but not as good.

Look at recent US Bombers WW II for some discussion of this, with real facts and explanations. Short story is that flak was much more effective than fighters, but it took 5-20,000 shells fired for every bomber brought down. Radar bombing on cloudy days reduced flak effectiveness, and chaff and jammers reduced German AAA radar.
