For those who don't know: It's the same size of OS data, but the misunderstanding comes in general all data storage like you use on computer, cameras etc. When you buy a storage like for example 512gb, not all 512gb storage can be used, more like 460gb can only be use. For instance on the video that "unusable" space they considered it as system. For those who question why there is unusable TL;DR would be Convertion misunderstanding on technical than advertised on data. A quick google will be.

True.. The same.. With the storage... I still don't get why they advertise HDD and SSD 2TB when it shows 1TB and 860GB.
@ninjata069 ай бұрын
@@mircioniIt's related to Windows and how it reads storage. Because Windows and specifically CPUs work in a binary code they use the number 2 to the power of some number, which in this case is 2^11 or 2048 GB. Now because storage works in decimals they use the number 10 to the power of some number, which in this case is 2*(10^3) which equals 2000 GiB. And because of that storage of drives is measured in Gibibytes not Gigabytes (1GiB is 1.024GB) . That's where your difference is. And after that when you boot into Windows it shows you the wrong information. It actually shows you the storage in GiB (1860) not in GB (2048) but Windows thinks it's GB because that's just how their UI works and is something that they should fix. I hope this helped you understand.

Well for an android replacement, I use LineageOS to breath some new life into old hardware. My Tab 3 (10,1) (2012) is a very good exaple: I think 1,5GB of ram, 16Gb of storage and with an x86 CPU firstly hard to run some sort of new opperating system on, but secondly has no benefits of a x86 CPU since its just running android apps, but all the withdraws like heat and low battery life. Now heres the kicker: on the Samsung ROM, with what this thing shipped with, it had almost no storage about 50MBs, was lagging, an could connect to YT because the app wasnt supported anymore, and in the browser videos were kinda okay, but the playstore was just awfully slow. 10 min to load the page of Hill Climb racing, not even installing it, just loading the page. Now on lineageOS, i choose the nano package of Gapps (Google Apps) which just includes Play Store and some services that are required to run. 8GB of storage left, battery life for ages, YT works, but it comes with some graphics bugs of Android 7. Like Image line remote not working. But for Spacedesk or lite gaming its absolutely fine. Best part: lineageOS is free Did that to my old phones and tablets aswell, runs like a charm

Fragmentation problem. Android does not offers: "Defragmentation" . So all that fragmented up space is unusable and is included as system. Huawei has released a new smarphone OS which is 3 times efficient than the linux kernal (written about 45 years ago). I can only hope it would be at least open source and Sweeten smartphone users' experience. Because Google never had better employees. They just hire the fresh college passouts. Here is the answer. Maybe.. Whenever we get a storage device of let's say 512 gb or 256gb. It's not actually 512 or 256 gb. The actual size is way less than the said amount. U can see the storage size by just going to my pc and there will be a bar showing the total actual size of the storage the same thing happens with smartphones. But rather than showing it directly, u need to connect the device to your pc and then check the storage through the "connected devices"

A 512gb chip requires additional data to manage the partitioning. This is why a 1tb drive is never actually 1tb once it's in your pc
@niveZz- Жыл бұрын
yep that's why
@nimamaster6128 Жыл бұрын
I used to believe that too until i saw a video from ThioJoe. It's not the partitioning, the storage devices are actually accurate on their size for example if a hard drive says it's 1000 GB it's 1000 GB. Every OS aside from windows both shows the numbers in decimal and uses the decimal naming system which is megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte etc. Windows on the other hand uses the decimal naming system but shows the numbers in the binary naming which are MiB, GiB (GibiBytes). Try it yourself, a 1000 GB drive on windows shows up as a 931 GB which in reality is 931 GiB and if you do the math it lands on 1000 GB
@nimamaster6128 Жыл бұрын
The difference between GB and GiB is that GB is 1000 MB and GiB is 1024 MB Edit: Actually that's wrong. Decimal system uses powers of 10 while binary system uses powers of 2 Decimal: Every 1000 bytes is a kilobyte, every 1000 kilobytes is a megabyte and so on. Binary: Every 1024 bytes is a kibibyte, every 1024 kibibytes is a mibibyte. So binary equivalents of decimal units scale as the unit gets bigger.
@nothcial Жыл бұрын
Wrong wrong and wrong. The code you would need to support 512 gigs is really small. And the reason why the 1 tb drive is never a tb is because the manufacturers use a different way to measure data. While the os uses another method. (1024gb=1tb) rather than (1000gb=1tb) which the manufacturers use to cut some costs.

The system is using it for something called the Dalvik cache or the ART cache. You can think of it as paging in windows.
@bc100dev Жыл бұрын
A paging file on Windows is rather a virtual memory. Android uses something called "Java heap", which initializes from a JVM (Java Virtual Machine). The system sets a fixed size for it, so that app processes can allocate it. So the system is filled with either junk or external memory (or in Android & Linux: swap space).
@free_tiger1 Жыл бұрын
@@bc100dev Android doesn't have a JVM , the Dalvik cache (in older versions of android) and the ART cache (in newer versions) is the JVM. so they are the ones maintaining the cache which works sort of like a paging file, in that the compiled byte code for an app which is generated on first run is stored (on a version basis).

I think there's also another reason. Usually, even though phones are stated to have 512gb, they actually don't, and therefore the system memory appears to be using more storage to make the total storage seem like 512gb. I forgot the source of this, but I did read it and it makes sense

There should be a new law that states companies are forced to disclose the actual available storage to the customer not the size of the storage unit itself.

I felt this was necessary the day I bought my first phone. It was advertised as 8GB but I only got about 4GB of available storage.

That's the thing... the system storage isn't really taking that much it's just the partition where it CAN use 89 gigs but if you do some modding you can use that up but just know that your phone might end up replacing your files with its own.
