Almost all the Buddha statues and ancient buildings in the game are modeled using 3D scans of real objects from various temples across mainland China. For example, the smiling statue at 1:00 is based on the statue of the Twenty-Eight Constellations at Yuhuang Temple in Jincheng, Shanxi. The massive Maitreya statue at 1:05 is based on the stone carving at Feilai Peak in Lingyin Temple, Hangzhou. Additionally, there will be many treasure chests in the game, and each one has a unique model, as they are all based on 3D scans of various Buddhist temple treasure boxes and even some cultural relics.

Guys, if you are interested in the storyline, you need to read 西遊記 Journey To The West. It gives you a lot more details of the characters. For example, Wukong learnt to do 72 transformations. But Erlangshen (the handsome guy) in the game can do 73 transformations. He was a few enemies defeated Wukong in the story.

@@8Bites Hahaha, Wukong himself is a monkey. Goku turn into giant monkey is different from Wukong, but his name is Wukong in Chinese. Wukong is a key character in the story of journey to the west, he can transform into 72 characters. He also can replicate himself using his hair (or fur). The weapon (rod) he used is in fact a pillar of Dragon's palace, which can resize and shrink into a toothpick like, that he used to keep inside his ear. Flying cloud is his vehicle. Throughout the journey, he fight many monsters, that's why he also being greet as "Buddha of War".

His story has been poplular in Chinese folklores for thirteen centuries and was written down by 吴承恩/Wu Cheng En in 16th century in his novel 西游记/Journey To The West, where 'West' means India, the home of Buddha. In Wu's novel, Wukong is a Monkey Jing (妖精/Yao Jing means animals that got magic power and got human shape and wisdom. They aren't neccessarily good or evil ) born in a seashore stone and grew up in Huaguo Mont with monkeys fellows there. Wukong is very powerful and learnt his 72 transformations from his teacher Master Bodhi . The Heaven(天庭/Tian Ting, the gods' kingdom) dreaded Wukong's power and decided to confer on him a honour title: 齐天大圣/Qi Tian Da Sheng/Great As Heaven together with a job in the Heaven . But Wukong quickly found gods' life very boring---he is a carefree wild monkey anyway. So he wildly ate all the magic peaches prepared in Queen Mother's birthday party---the Peach Festival and went straight back to his home Huaguo Mont. The Heaven felt humiliated and sent forces to capture him. But the warrior gods are no match for Wukong. They attacked fellow monkeys in Huaguo Mont and irritated Wukong. Wukong then beat all Gods from the Heaven. The Heaven panickly called for help from Rulai Buddha, who seems to have infinite Buddhist power. He came and sealed Wokong under Wuzhi(five-finger) Mont. 500y later in Tang dynasty, the human emperor Li Shi Min asked the young renowned Dharma master San Zang to go on a pilgrimage to the west to Buddhist Paradise to take Buddhist sutras of 'transcendence and persuasion for good will' back for his people. Guanyin of South Sea, the mercy goddess, told San Zang to save Wukong from his Seal under Wuzhi Mont. In exchange, Wukong promised to protect San Zang along the way. While Black Myth: Wukong's plots and characters seems much more closely rooted from original Journey to The West story, though still quite some differences. When I was a kid my mom told me not to watch out the road at dark new moon nights because Xiaotian Hound ate the moon up and left no moonlight! China is like the Greek and Rome in East Asia. Its culture has been spreaded all around East Asia for thousands of years, so no wonder many people from different East Asian countries know Wukong's stories. It's cool this ancient Chinese tale is still widely liked and being adapted. But notice that the Japnese comic Dragon Ball does not have much to do with the original myth in storyline. Dragon Ball only adopted Goku's name and few settings like the nimbus cloud. While Black Myth: Wukong's plots and characters seems much more closely rooted from original Journey to The West story, though still quite some differences. So do not think of Dragon Ball's plots when playing this game, that'll get you confused. Hope you'll enjoy the game cuz I'm waiting for further walkthrough videos!

Many of the building prototypes in the game come from Sichuan, and the pavilion where the Poison Enemy King is located is from Lifeng Temple in Nanbu County, Nanchong City. The Han Que background shown in the promotional video comes from the Han Que in Pingyang Prefecture, Mianyang City. In addition, there is the Heavenly King Hall in Ping'en Bao'en Temple and the Piluzana Buddha statue in Mingshan Temple, Anyue County, Ziyang City.

The story in this game is very distorted. This so-called Monkey King was very arrogant. He was a monkey how lived for thousands of years and had turned into a power demi-god or demon whatever you want to call him. He had no parents. It was known that he was born into this world as a result of an explosion of a giant rock. Somehow, the heaven saw his power and believed his could become a real demi-god. He was taken to the heaven to serve the heaven king, but he started messing around believing that he was very powerful to even take on the heaven king. After messing up almost the entire heaven, Buddha appeared and captured him. Buddha knew one day this Monkey King would be helpful to a Buddhist monk who would be going to the west to collect Buddhist scripts. AND Buddha knew that this monkey wasn't bad in nature. Because this monkey wasn't born from parents, he should be able to learn the meaning of emptiness. Buddha in Sanskrit means "thus come" or equivalently "thus go". You came from nowhere and you will end up in nowhere.

Basically a lot of manga n anime are using journey to the west characters, especially a group of 4, master the monk, wukong, piggy head, and sandyman as fundamental characters. Probably some story writers will replace/add some characters, but you will always see "wukong" as an important character in the story.
