In this episode I take a look at the Yamaha CS10, a little analog single-oscillator synthesizer, that resembles a toy keyboard. I also show the Yamaha MR10 drum machine.

5:44 It's because there's a zero missing. It's a Yamaha YM10150D, Key Code Tone Generator. It's a hybrid between analog and digital. The "base" signal is digital, and the modifications are based in analog circuits.

Mister Shledge No, a DCO is an analog oscillator - it just uses a digital clock to control its frequency. The CS01's chip generates a digital waveform based on what key you press, then that waveform gets converted to an analog wave and run through the other analog components (filter, LFO, etc.).

Its analog oscilator actually. There is high freq master VCO (which is also connected to pitch bend) that then gets divided down and waveshaped by YM chip. Key decoding / osc control is digital, but sound source is fully analog.

the problem with simple synth circuits like that is that the sounds don't have much depth or richness to them, so a lot of effects don't really work well. A delay pedal would be sweet, and maybe a flanger but without the body of sound that a multi oscillator synth in unison mode can do, effects might end up highlighting the rough edges rather than creating a full, good sound.

Did you know that when you press more than one Rhythm Select buttons on the MR-10 (and they actually stay down, sometimes they wont stay locked if you press more than one) you get a strange mixture of the rhythm styles you selected, which results in some quite interesting combinations... :)

The Yamaha CS01 is one of my favourite instruments. I have the mk II-version which I purchased brand new in 1984 myself. I have played it on stage and in the studio and it is one of the greatest monosynths and at least my favourite. I have also several other ones, even the modern ones like the Korg Monologue (which is also great) and many virtual analogue ones (like Waldorf Rocket, Yamaha reface CS, the Roland boutique series etc etc), but for me the CS-01 is much more important. Too bad you didn't cover much the stuff what makes it so great, the square wave with open filter and no use of the EG isn't really what the CS01 is about, it's the PWM with it's dedicated own second LFO, it's the filter and the EG. The mk II version has even better filter with self oscillating. And it's very good also for making percussion and drum sounds... but for that you need the self resonating 24dB mkII filter. I've been planning to do a video about the CS01 mk II because there doesn't seem to be a good one in KZbin... It was my school to sound synthesis, and the foundation of my own current over 25 synth collection...

I have one of these. Best thing is it runs on four AA cells! It is a cool little device, and can make some nice sounds. It's a great 'beginner synth'. The switches and sliders are of good quality. A weird anomaly is that the pitch-bend only goes up! This ties in with its guitar-synth aspiration, as it can only therefore do 'bends' up, as on a typical guitar! Weird decision, and one that limits its expressiveness as a synth. I would not part with it!

Got mine and the predecessor to the drum machine you showed that was even simpler back when they were new in 1982. I did a lot of Home recording with both of those using a echo unit and a chorus unit with them. The breath controller did some very interesting sweet effects when you used it but it really wasn't that useful it was more useful with my dx21. I did use the CSO one on stage with the band and often use the glissando effect on there which was my little cheat that made it seem like I was playing things a lot faster. I've actually recreated Keith Emerson's end solo from lucky man using that little unit. Watching all your videos makes me want to clean it up because it's never had more than just occasional wipes with baby wipes ever since I got it still works after all these years. The original wall that came with it long since died but it works well on six double a batteries.

You can have the line out going to the PA system and you can still have headphones as a monitor. Nobody should be using the internal speaker... it's just good it's cut off when you plug in any real cables. And the headphone out has different amplification than the line out plug. Also the line out is a TR mono jack and the headphones out is a TRS stereo jack (even it has the same signal on both "channels").

The CS01 is one of my favorite synths of all time simply because it's so simple but at the same time sounds so beautiful in its own way. For all of you who have one and don't get it to sound as awesome as you want, run it thru a looping envelope or a gated sequencer (so it "cuts" the sound) and maybe even with a delay or a reverb to make the sound bigger, I use to run it thru my Electribe AE-1 for distortion, delay, "gating" and extra filter. The pulse-with modulation is great for deep bass and leads sounds while the rest is mostly good for more chiptune-style sounds. For added expression you can use the breath-controller input to control the filter and volume, in that way the triangle is great for softer sounds as well. For the rev1 (as the one in the video) there is a pot on the PCB under the cutoff slider where you can change the resonance of the filter - it can sound really aggressive but it is easy to drive it out of control. Some ppl modify the rev1 by wiring one of the breath controller inputs to control reso. It is a small and simple synth but it is possible to get it to sound raw and aggressive and useful for 8-bit style music as well.
@ata000001

The Yamaha proprietary custom "mystery chip" Yamaha YM1015 is the combined key tracker and oscillator of the synth, i.e. the actual device generating the sound of the synthesizer, which then goes thru the filter and EG circuits. The chip died once on my own personal CS01 mkII, but back then it was luckily still possible to order a replacement by an official Yamaha synth service shop.

I was just using my CS-01 last night and it's a great little synth, but aside from collector's value I'd say that buying an arturia microbrute is a better use of $200 or so. I had the microbrute making the EXACT same patches as the CS-01 last night, which really surprised me. The PWM is better on the CS-01, but basically everything else is better on the microbrute. Since I have both, I have to say that they cover the same ground. The microbrute has 2 more oscillators, way better resonance control, is semi-modular, has plenty of ways to sound dirty or clean (yamaha CS-01 is mostly just clean sounding aside from the noise waveform), not to mention that the microbrute has cv/gate, MIDI IN, AND external input, so...it's an easy choice. The CS-01 was a little king for decades, but now there are better options for the same money or less. But if you just have to have a CS-01, be patient. Don't buy one from Japan. CS-01 is worth $200 and the Japanese ones often run $350-600 after shipping. The CS-01 was produced in large numbers, and so they are not very rare. The CS-01 MkII IS rare, and they tend to go for $450 or more. The mark II has a much better filter (24dB versus 12dB on the mark I), resonance slider instead of 2-position hi/low switch, has a black and green paint job, and is overall a much more versatile instrument.

Well, you're right, thanks for pointing that out. I was thinking of mixable waveforms and typed oscillators for some reason. I should have said one oscillator with 3 mixable waveforms and one suboscillator. That said, I think the microbrute oscillator is FAR more versatile than a standard mono synth oscillator due to the mixable waveforms.

I had a CS01 and it is cool if you are really want to understand the analog, substractive synthesis in real and not emulated because it´s reduced to all rudementary functions. But that also means it´s a little bit lame:) Adding an Arduino Midi and soldering some of this babes together would be a great analog machine but maybe a lil bit to expensive because it has a collector status and alternatives are given. I don´t know any more real analog Synthesizer in that easy and good to understand design, even its absolutely obvious and an affordable synthesizer.

Take 16 of those and add aftertouch and ring modulator; you are approaching CS-80 territory. From what I could see, they may be using the same chip set in the CS-01 as they do in each of the 16 CS-80 voice cards. That larger chip I suspect is they key scan controller. As always, thanks for taking the time to do the tear down.
@gavincurtis
@gavincurtis 7 жыл бұрын
Well, after watching this on a real screen instead of a phone.... definitely not the same same chipset. But nice sound. For each voice card the CS-80 uses 1 VCO chip which then goes to the wave generator chip. This is the chip that produces all the waveforms. From there it goes into the first filter chip (low, mid and high pass). Then into the 2nd filter chip which is identical to the first. Then into a primary and secondary pair of pseudo mystery envelope generator chips, one which adds resonance to widen the sound and make it all phat and juicy. From there they audio signal passes through four VCA chips which mix effects from other systems (LFO for example) into the final output. A total of 12 chips per voice card. So I was way off.... but now I have my eye on that big mystery Yamaha chip.... could they have integrated a good portion of the CS-80 voice card into one chip? Need to see where the envelope and filter slider controls on the circuit board go.... CS-01 shopping now.

A small keyboard and a strap... that MIGHT be the predecessor to the actual keytars that many 80's and 90's artists used :3 (And is still used sometimes even today)

The Moog Libertation was released in 1980. There was also the SCI Prophet Remote keyboard controller for the Prophet 5 (not sure what year it was released). But the first "keytar" was called the Syntar by George Mattson who now builds modular synthesizers.

Oh wow :3 I see it but let's say that the Yamaha was the almost closest to a keytar but without the buttons for the other hand that most keytars have so it would be a strapped keyboard but nice data, I highly appreciate it :3

Although not technically designed as a keytar, Edgar Winter added strap pegs to the keyboard controller to his ARP 2600 and played it as a keytar in 1973.

I have a MIDI kit installed in my CS01 which makes it into a great studio tool. Like a very poor man's TB-303 or SH-101. Pulse Width Modulation adds a very fat wet quality to the sound. Love it!

There was a mixer and monitors that went with the complete set when it was originally released. My wife has the black and aqua one now with breath controller. I had the MR-10 years ago, the mods and circuit bent versions rock, if you like that type of thing.

Just for info, the 1/4" jack doesn't make a product a "pro use" product. Even the 1/8" can be used in pro-audio, and the 1/4" can be used in home applications. The difference between pro and "beginner", in instruments particularly, is the build quality and parts.

Yamaha's old PSG based on the GI AY-2-8910 was called the YM2149; maybe there's an analog single-voice version called the 1015?

Cool find! It's like Yamaha dropped a shrinking potion on a Roland SH-101. That PWM is tasty. I hadn't heard of this model, but ironically I have a VST that's an homage to it. It's called the Hahaha CS01.

My understanding is that the 8 Bit Guy has little interest in producing music with modern devices, but I would love to hear what he could come up with, using a DAW like Ableton, Logic or FL Studio in his new Mac and a simple MIDI controller keyboard, like those from M Audio.

My friends and I recorded teenage punk rock songs with the MR10's disco beat and a Tascam 4 track, and got a gig at the Whiskey! The 90s were weird and wonderful, but we had to sell 50 tickets at $7 each on a Tues. :)

The CS01 uses a digital tone generator not an analog VCO. Hence the video game sounding vibe and stepping. The IC you don't recognize is the digital tone generator chip. It's a hybrid synth.

I once had a Yamaha CS-15 that had knobs on the side for using it like a keytar. I never did, but that was still fun/funny to do. I was always afraid it would weight too much for the strap.

Why these keyboard don't make sinewave??? i'm curious.
@AndersEngerJensen
@AndersEngerJensen 7 жыл бұрын
Sine waves are rarely usable since they don't carry much harmonic content. It's easier to get a nicer sine approximation from a triangle with filter and it will allow you to move the sound into something more definable that way. That's why you more often see Square, triangle, saw and pulse width modulation (plus noise) as the base waveforms for oscillators on synths like these.

That wide chip says YM on it and a rare number in the 1000s when most of them are 2000s and 3000s so it must be the sound chip of the keyboard but also a unique rare model of YM too which makes it a unique sounding keyboard to the normal Yamaha.
