In this episode I take an in depth review of 3 of the "superdrums" keyboards from Casio: The MT-500, MT-520, and MT205. I also have a look at the electronic drum sticks and the DP-1 drum pads.

Wow, you blew my mind by sharing that Darrell Abbott was your second cousin. I was and I still am a huge Pantera fan. In fact, I was able to meet the whole band 92 or 93 when I found a backstage pass on the floor at a Pantera concert. Those guys, were extremely friendly and down to earth in person. I still have their autographs. Sorry for the loss of your cousin, his death shocked us all and no doubt we all miss him very much.

I was working in Egypt when I heard about Dimebag Darrell's murder. The Egyptian travel agency representative, a very conservative, three-piece-suit-wearing gentleman in his mid 30s, was a big metal fan, and informed us of the murder. It just goes to show, you never know how many lives your art touches, and the effect you have on people, from whatever world they hail. May he rest in peace.

David, where do you store all your keyboards? I only have two 49 key units, but even so I find them awkward to store since they're so rectangular and would take a ton of space on a shelf. Do you have a loft filled with nothing but keyboards?

Mostly in the attic. I don't like storing them there.. but I'd be swimming in them otherwise. I do put them in protective bags, though.

And I have that digital guitar from the commercial - totally incapable of making that sound it did in the video, that guitar is a DG-1 Digital Guitar - and it's basically a Casio MT series synthesizer in a guitar form factor. Instead of keys it uses six spring-loaded triggers attached to the nylon strings to trigger the note, and note selection is done by a membrane keypad lined up under the frets of a rubber fingerboard. Quite an interesting experience playing one of those.

I got an MT-520 for Christmas in, I want to say 1987 or 88, so I was 6 or 7 years old. When you demonstrated all those sounds in this video, it was like going back in time. I haven't heard those sounds in 30 years but I instantly recognized them. Man, I never thought I'd ever hear those sounds again.

Fun fact: The drum samples on the Super Drums keyboards, and on the later ToneBank keyboards all came from a sample tape that was produced for the RZ-1 sampling drum machine. Loads of cool stuff on there, but it was evident that they recycled an awful lot. The RZ-1 is a neat piece of gear!

My wife and I got a full 88 key digtal Piano (Korg) from the 80's when Her father passed away. We kept it for a while and then ended up selling it to a family who's child was taking piano lessons. so for now I'm back down to just my Yamaha PSR-E403 (which sounds better than the old Korg ever could, but lacks weigted Keys) Some day when I have money and space I will upgrade but for now it is as it is. I always find your channel Interesting. Keep up the good work.

Yo, I have the MT-205 sitting right next to me as I watched this, and I had forgotten that was its model number until I saw it on-screen! This was the keyboard that made me fall in love with Casio, and, when I saw it, I freaked out and spun it around -- and sure enough, after years of owning this thing and making music on it, I had ~no idea~ that it had inputs for drum-pads. Also, yeah, the lack of a line output is the bane of my existence, because the headphone jack is unbelievably noisy. I end up mic'ing up its speakers. Thank you so much for this video!

hahah.. Yeah, I'd like to do some experiments in adding a proper line-out jack onto some of these keyboards that don't have one. It is hard to record from a headphone jack too because it shuts off the internal speakers, so then you need another external sound amplifier.

8:49 - This was my first Keyboard I recorded on, I recorded my own album with this Keyboard.... mine was given to me and I remember the times I spent in my room with it also I brung this with me to school for (90's kids) show and tell, man I was a musically talented kid/teen. I was the Music King at my private school and class! nobody could have touched my expertise in Keyboarding then at a young age. It died cause of battery leakage and I threw it away, I regret that to this day, I always will, there is nothing like this Keyboard in my book.

I have an MT-205 (or 250, I can't remember at the moment). What I discovered is that if you plug a set of earbuds with volume controls in, you can make the instruments trigger with the volume controls on them. Pretty cool.
