Oh man. I love that story. I recently watched the Wish You Were Here documentary again. Great stuff. When I was little the Wall was popular but by the time I started playing guitar David Gilmour was pushed to the side in the guitar mags (the only source of learning stuff at the time) for Vai, MacAlpine, DiMeola, Morse. It was all about playing fast. Finally around 1995 I got my head on straight and realized that Gilmour is the most melodic soloist on the planet (I give a nod to Dickie Betts too, what he does over 3 minutes with 5 notes in the middle of Blue Sky is beautiful). LMAO. Nicely played Lance. If you're serious about being stuck in start I'd be happy to help you get on learning path that won't require a lot of time (15 minutes a day, 4 days a week) and will result in success. The best part is there is no charge. No angle or purchase down the road. There are tons of free lessons out there and I'll give you a blueprint to follow. I've been teaching for 30 years (a lot of people throw that out but I have spent 12 of those years teaching full time) and I can't tell you how many 30, 40, 50, 60 somethings say they wish they took it up when they were younger. Many of those people are excellent guitar players today. Again, if it was just a joke, it was funny! :)

@@8MinuteAxe 8 Minute Axe I know I'm about a month late on this, but I just discovered your channel. If you're still willing, I would love to have a blueprint/path towards learning guitar again. I owned one as a child and taught myself how to copy a few songs, but never even learned the basics, and it just ended up collecting dust for years. I'm getting ready to try picking it up again, and I really don't know where to start, but I could definitely cut 30 minutes out of my day to dedicate to practice.

Kylo I'd be happy to get you started. I'll have more time tomorrow to get you set up on a plan but for now give me the basics. What type of music do you listen to the most (or the one that you're most interested in playing)? 30 minutes is more than enough time to get you moving very quickly. I normally recommend no more than 15 minutes at a time to start with for a couple of reasons. There is going to be a 2 to 3 week period at the beginning where the fingers are going to be a little sore and the bulk of the frustration comes at the beginning. I've taught hundreds (if not thousands) of students over the years and if you can make it past the first couple of weeks you will see massive improvement quickly. Right now Fender is giving away three months of free lessons to the first 100,000 people who respond. I recommend you go there as soon as you see this and see if you can get in. I looked over the lessons and they're very well thought out. You could use those as your main source and you can reach out to me anytime with questions. My email is [e-mail]. Shoot me an email. I was just telling another viewer that I don't even bother commenting on some of my favorite youtubers videos because I would rather be ignored than get a 'thanks man'. I don't mean to knock anyone and yes it's easy when you have less than 1000 subs to respond (the extra traffic lately has me taking an hour a day to respond, time that I enjoy the most) but if I got to the point where it was impossible to respond it would probably mean that I was making money from the channel at which time I could get someone to help me edit these darn videos and free up more time to interact. It definitely is very time consuming to respond to everyone. I'm long winded on top of that. LOL. My channel is still getting about 10 times the views that a 1400 sub channel should get and I know things will go back to reality soon, but I've been logging on twice a day, and spending about an hour each time responding to everyone. The hardest part is that comments that are in thread replies don't pop up in my unanswered queue so I have to manually go through each video and make sure someone didn't send something at the end of a thread. Surely, those will be impossible to respond to if the channel continues to grow. I'm also a believer in karma. I figure if I do the right thing for the right reasons, good things will come. The best part of the recent success is that I can look my 9 year old in the eye and say 'you see what happens when you work hard and do the right thing!'. He watches YT all the time and at first didn't understand how I didn't have 1 million subs. I've kept him in the loop and when I was celebrating getting 5 subs and 50 views in one day he understood better how hard it is now to even get the little success I've had. So I'm in the middle of editing a new video, your comment comes in, and I start laughing so loudly, my fiance asks me what's going on. You're probably the 10th person to point it out and you're so right. Honestly, all of the gigs and sessions over the years did not prepare me one bit for being in front of the camera. This was probably the 5th or 6th video I shot. In the first couple I couldn't even remember my name! And as far as executing the riffs. Jeez. These are riffs I've played effortlessly 1000 times yet I could barely get through them and still had to settle for a couple with choked out notes. I hope you at least enjoyed the comedy at the end where Don Henley kicks the crap out of me! I felt much better doing that. Anyway, I'd like to think I've improved a little. I'm 65 and 4.5 years into my journey learning guitar. I did try as a kid and always had a guitar or two but never really developed my playing. I consider myself a 50+ year beginner moving into intermediate territory. In this short time I have acquired over 20 six string guitars. I am not wealthy, I still work 50 hours a week making decent money. Most of my guitars are a few hundred to a little under a thousand with the exception of two signature strats and a Yamaha acoustic. A mixture of solids, semi, hollow, and acoustics. It has been a process of learning what I like, and it's been extremely fun and enjoyable. Lately, I have decided to thin out the herd as I have found I really love strats and P90s. My two favorite acoustics are a Yamaha AC5R which sounds amazing and is so easy to play and an Epi EJ160E. A couple of weeks ago in my local GC I was exiting the Gibson/Martin room back into the main acoustic room passing the lesser expensive brands when a 12 string caught my eye, a used made in USA Martin, nothing fancy but, oh, did it sound sweet. Anyway, I have barely put it down. Everything sounds so lush and beautiful and when I switch back to a six string I believe my playing has been improving. I have to admit that I have thought more than once about giving up because I thought I would never be able to play the way I wish I could but buying a 12 string has taken me to another level. Buying the 12 string is how I found this channel. Thanks for the great videos!

I carried my 6 and 12 strings with me for years with my band. In places too small for me to have 3 guitars on stage I used my 6 string with a chorus pedal to help replicate the 12 string sound on Hotel California.

My first guitar was a lovely black Fender acoustic. A few years later I discovered the 12, but everything available at the time (early 90's) was either fabulously expensive, or complete junk. Until one day, roaming the music store, I picked up a new Korean brand - the name escapes me at the moment - and it was that rare occurrence of a budget guitar where they just got everything right. Playable, good sound, beautiful finish, and I could afford it. I sold the Fender five years later, when I realized I hadn't played it in five years. I don't play much these days, but I still have that 12.

The best part of doing this are all the amazing stories. I love it. I think about all of the trips to the music stores over the years, the one chance I had at buying a Cort double neck (based on the Gibson ES-1275) and passed! The amazing Aria Pro II my buddy got for $150. And you're right. With 12 strings, there's crap and then there's trying to justify spending at least $600 on a very specialized instrument. That's awesome that you got that rare find. I bought an Ibanez a couple of weeks ago. Check out the video (it's complete with another run in with Don Henley. This time I sell my soul to him). MORE CLASSIC 12 STRING RIFFS kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWO6fKCEjrRpi9E. In it I kind of make fun of the borrowed Mitchell, but, I'm returning the Ibanez. Now it's decision time. I'm looking at maybe a Guild for $500 or a used Taylor 150 for $600. I would much rather be buying a Jaguar that I've had my eye on but these 12 string videos have been by far my most popular and honestly I am starting to enjoy playing it much more. Hey man. What a great song. Funny thing. Back in the early 2000s my band opened for David Byrne in NY in front of maybe 1000 people. About three weeks later we opened for the Tom Tom Club (Chris and Tina's band) in New Haven in front of about 500 (200 of which we brought in). I thought to myself, if only they could patch up their differences they could have played in front of 25,000. Band relationships can be tough though. More complicated than family sometimes. Hey Parthiv. I really appreciate that. The channel is about to turn one. At six months I had 250 subs and I would get about 3 comments a week. I committed to myself that if the channel ever popped a little, I would answer 100% of all comments, replies, and emails. I'm closing in on 4k subs and I truly believe it's a result of doing the right thing. I try to give each viewer at least as much time as they're giving me and I pay careful attention not to fall into the 'thanks man' trap. I will write that every once in a while if someone is trolling me or being an ass but I've been very lucky with that too. Only a couple of trolls and everybody has been so cool. If you ever get a chance to see Leo Kottke at a small venue, he makes a 12 sing like no-one else. I first saw him live at a coffee house in Minneapolis around 1969. All he did was play his twelve. No vocals. It was awesome.

Hey Cattracks. When I made this video 9 months ago, I didn't own a 12-string and knew very little about the history of the instrument. I had heard the name Leo Kottke, but didn't know his music. About 4 months ago, this video blew up and I through all of my focus on the 12-string. I'm on my third guitar. I finally settled on a Takamine GJ72. Beautiful guitar, incredibly well made, and a huge, balanced sound. I've extensively researched the history of the instrument. I even did a brief history in my video THE RIFF THAT MADE THE 12-STRING FAMOUS kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJqtoZeFmqpobaM and I've been playing it about 6 hours a day. Viewers have gotten me deep into Leo Kottke, all kinds of corridos, a lot of 70s prog rock (I've even gotten into French Canadian 70s prog band Harmonium). I was actually doing a lot of fingerstyle as this video was starting to gain traction (I had just completed two Tommy Emmanuel courses and was playing a lot of solo country blues) and Leo's music really intrigued me. I've become proficient at 12-string finger picking though I dare say it's a strong suit of mine. I've been working up Vaseline Machine Gun which will most likely be my first Kottke post. I have the picking parts down but I still need to get my slide playing up to snuff. I'm not sure if you caught my video of Travelling Riverside Blues LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED ON A 12-STRING kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2m9hoJqjJZogM0 but you can see that my acoustic slide playing needs a little work, mostly with my attack since Leo effortlessly moves between picking and the slide. If it was all slide or all picking, I'd probably be ok. LOL Anyway, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and for your comment. I'm thinking of doing a video about songs that were originally recorded on a 6 string but would have sounded better on a 12. This one was borrowed from a student and was in rough shape. Every few days I spend a few hours scrolling through to make sure I didn't miss any comments (I try to respond to 100 of comments and emails). Tangerine was a big miss. I'd like to say that it was because I only wanted to do one song by each band but I totally forgot about it and it's one of my favorite Zep tunes. When I was in high school in the 70's, there were 3 guys who formed a band they named All Men Are Brothers. Say it fast and you know their favorite band. One of the played 12 string all the time. I always loved the sound.

Love it! By far the best part of this is all of the great stories and memories that viewers send me or that they stir up. One guy mentioned 'Heartbreak Station' by Cinderella. Totally not my style of music and I never would have come up with it BUT he did remind me of a girl I briefly dated who loved them. I think she liked the band Trickster too. Obviously, the relationship didn't last long. Hey, there's a documentary, I believe made by the BBC (I know it's a British production), on the Allmans that is fantastic. A ton of stuff on the early days and it digs deep. They even discuss Duane and Berry's accidents, the circumstances, and show the street grid and how they eerily died so close and just over a year apart. Great concert footage too. Xlnt compilation! I have a Martin D-1218 that a good friend gave me as the vig for loaning him some cash years ago and this inspires me to fire it up and learn some of these riffs! I would definitely subscribe to a series you could do where u teach us how to play each of those iconic hits - not just the opening riffs - on the 12-string! The 12 string riff that comes to mind to me first is the Byrds' Turn! Turn! Turn!. Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker was a huge part of the sound of the Byrds and he in turn influenced lots of others to pick up the instrument. That Eagles bit was hilarious 😂 I've heard from multiple YTers that the Eagles are notorious blockers.

I have a 25 year old (or so) Alvarez Artist Series twelve string. (All mahogony except for laminated spruce top) It wasn't expensive but the workmanship is beautiful and it is remarkable how well it stays in tune. After months in the case, I can pull it out and play it and its really close. I'll never sell this beauty.

Everyone I've ever known who's owned one has absolutely raved about it. No less than 40 people have lovingly talked about their Alvarez. I'm guessing they have great workmanship and more importantly perhaps, amazing quality control. I just bought an inexpensive jazzstang from CNZ Audio. I'm really impressed. You can tell that someone worked on the frets and the nut post factory. And they wrote me a long, handwritten note, which was a nice touch. The thing has p90s that actually sound like p90s. Best of all, viewers have turned me on to the brilliance of Leo Kottke, Ariel Camacho, and a ton of great rock 12 string songs that I never knew about (like the French Canadian prog rock group Harmonium). @@8MinuteAxe Don't sweat the "delay!" On this platform, I hope no one expects quick (or sometimes even any!) reactions to their comments; I certainly don't. Yeah, Leo Kottke is a favorite of mine ( _Vaseline Machine Gun_ does a real number with slide-guitar technique on a 12! - I never learned that one, but it's an awesome listen). He's one of dozens. I haven't heard of some of the artists you mention; I'll have to check them out! In early Simon & Garfunkel concerts, Paul used to switch, on-stage, between a 6 and a 12 acoustic guitars from one song to the next. _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,_ totally blew me away when I first heard it. Maybe the best use of an acoustic 12-string I can think of. Paul Simon made very effective use of his Guild F-512 on lots of S & G tunes, including _Hazy Shade of Winter,_ and some others that are uncertain in my memory whether or not they used the 12. There was _As Tears Go By,_ _Lady Jane,_ and _Play with Fire,_ by The Rolling Stones. Several Beatles tunes, too. Don't neglect checking out _Walk Right In_ (1962) by the Rooftop Singers - I think that song may have launched the 12-string as a popular sound in pop music. The Seekers' _I'll Never Find Another You_ is another outstanding example from the 60's. Several other tunes of theirs, feature member Keith Potger on his 12-string. I think _Georgy Girl_ was among them - not certain of it. The Mamas and The Papas featured the 12 on some of their hits - the opening few seconds of _California Dreamin'_ really hits it outa the park! Not to mention _Creeque Alley._ Of course, there were lots of tunes by the Byrds featuring an electric 12. _Eight Miles High_ comes to mind. And _I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better_ by Gene Clark of that group. And of course, their rendition of Dylan's _Mr. Tambourine Man._ But this list is getting too long' I'll quit, for now anyway... Fred

I have no problem when they do a copyright claim on a video like mine or a full performance but they even go after lessons. Absolutely. LOL. So, my 12 string guitars have been a saga. I borrowed the one I'm using here. Then this video blew up and I really wanted to work hard on my 12 string playing so I bought one. I'm not sure if you made it to the end of this one where Don Henley kicks the crap out of me but that's a running feud I have now. In the sequel video, I actually get my 12 string by selling my soul to him. It's here if you want to check it out. LOL MORE CLASSIC 12 STRING RIFFS kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWO6fKCEjrRpi9E. The Ibanez actually holds tune pretty well but the key to tuning a 12 string is definitely patience. I've tuned on the fly at 100s of gigs and I was doing that a month ago, had the wrong machine head and POP, high G gone! :) Anyway, I'm returning the Ibanez and I ordered a Takamine GS72. Definitely a major upgrade. I always have my Peterson strobe nearby as I try to get as accurate I can to start that way if it wanders a little, I'm still close. The tuning in this video is horrible, and believe me, I've heard about it. When I received the guitar, it was in sorry shape. I adjusted and tweaked and swapped out strings but I was still forced to tune 1/2 step down and the intonation was terrible. I finally dug it out and filed the nut and sanded the bridge on it and it came out pretty nice. You can check it out here. I just got a Takamine GJ72 and the thing not only stays in tune incredibly well but it also takes a capo well.
