@betatalk357 Awesome analysis and I like the way you think. Well done. But we have to remember that Dino Velvet is not only an artist but is (just as importantly a business man) to sell his "art" and make money. When (Investigator) Tom and his "associate", Max, arrive at Velvet's 'office'... We see Dino on the phone apparently discussing business with another associate so we can deduce that Dino is a fairly busy man with his art-business and has a fan-base... so it's not like it is completely out of the ordinary for someone to want one of Dino's films. Or, to put it another way... Porno / S&M / Bondage / Fetish fans come from all walks of life and as Max explained a few minutes prior, Dino will do commissions for the right price... nothing illegal... but borderline. If Dino is doing nothing illegal (and we will assume that he is not) than he knows that he has nothing to worry about. Unless, of course... Dino is making a snuff film and will do all he can (and/or use only what is absolutely necessary) to document the snuff-murder in order to get away with it. As far his phone call with Eddie Poole... we can tell by his tone of voice and the way that he talks down to and dismisses Eddie that Dino again feels he has nothing to worry about and/or thinks little more of Eddie than an occasional business associate. Of course, while all this taking place... the rich-man's lawyer, Longdale, is trailing Welles because as we learn, both Longdale and his deceased client, Mr. Christiansen, were the conspirators & ring-leaders behind the snuff-film (as well as that of Mary-anne's murder). But my biggest question is once the snuff film had been uncovered by Christiansen's widow... why didn't the lawyer just find a way of getting rid of and destroying the film when she wasn't looking... or... contact all of those involved (Eddie, Dino & "Machine") and inform them ahead of time that an investigator was hired and would soon be looking for them and asking strange questions?? Getting back to Eddie... he again has only what is little more than a passing business relationship with Dino and when pressed by Welles about who "Machine" is, Eddie states that he (Machine) is Dino's boy and both shows up & leaves wearing his mask. So... the two closest "friends" out of this mixed bag of lowlifes would be Dino and "Machine" as they are the first two who are at the 'movie-set' when Welles arrives and it is Machine he rushes to Dino's aide when he is shot in the neck by Longdale.
@VredesStall
@VredesStall 4 жыл бұрын
@betatalk357 Another good analysis.... but here is my rebuttal. ** "Dino was running the whole show". Indeed... Dino Velvet "ran the show" as far making the film from behind the camera was concerned. However, it was the deceased steel-baron, Christiansen, who was the catalyst behind the snuff-film in the first place. Or, as Tom Welles during is rendezvous with Longdale: Christiansen could not locate one... so he paid his lawyer to find (that is, make) one for him. Since Longdale was not exactly an expert on porn (and especially snuff films) it probably didnt take him long or a whole lot homework to find a shoe-in to the porno-world down in seedy Los Angeles with Eddie Poole. Eddie saw a chance at quick, easy money and took it... Not unlike how Max California was a "friend of a friend" of 'Frenchy'... Eddie was a "freind of a friend" of Dino's... who also knew a 'friend' who was just right for the job for a snuff film (ie, "Machine"). ** "Longdale probably already called Dino" **. Longdale did indeed call Dino... but this was AFTER Tom and Max had had their meeting with Dino under the guise of commissioning a "Dino-Velvet Original" (that is... Tom was trying to set them up to see the murderer "Machine" in person). Dino confirms this when he tells Welles that he didn't know what to make of him at first but that an old acquaintance (ie, Longdale) re-appeared to explain the whole thing to him... so when Welles arrived at the "set-location" they were already light-years ahead of him and knew he was investigating who made the snuff-film and wanted it back from him immediately. ** "Eddie would've called Longdale directly" **. Not so sure about that, as Longdale would have likely changed and/or used different phone numbers as per his dealings with a scumbag like Eddie (and perhaps the same goes with Dino). Afterall, Dino knew he short-changed all of them and (more importantly) knew what they were all capable of and didnt want to have to deal with them any longer or anymore than what was absolutely necessary. Or, being that he is a lawyer, he likely knew how to locate them on his terms without them locating him... because like you said, Longdale did not want to risk embarrasment... or worse. And like you had said in your previous comment.... since Tom Welles knew that Longdale had double-crossed and was lying to him the entire time, he had no hesitations whatsoever about ratting him out to Dino and Eddie about how Longdale had short-changed the two of them... which was a clever thing to do at that very tense moment as it got their attention off of him for just a few moments. I've always wondered what they had planned on doing with Tom once they got the film back from him. Yes, they could have destroyed it and sent him on his way... but... since they killed Max right in front of him and since Tom knew that they were all responsible for Maryanne's murder they probably would have had no choice but to kill him because Welles "knew too much". ** "As for Longdale, it'd implicate himself if he stole the snuff film" **. ????? Well, he KNEW full-well that he was already implicated in Mary-anne's murder... which is why I don't understand why he didn't have the film destroyed and/or at least try to convinced Mrs. Christiansen to destroy it so that they could all save face. Now that I think on it... he probably did try to talk her into destroy it... but Mrs. Christiansen being the kind descent woman she is, decided that she wanted to get to the bottom of this atrocity once and for all... and Longdale did as she wished because he didn't want to lose his gravy-train with her when she could have easily fired him if he didnt play ball or do as she told him. Now that I think on that more... perhaps to stay in good graces with Mrs. Christiansen and not bite the hand that feeds him Longdale likely cooked up some story to her that he would keep an eye on Investigator Welles to ensure that she got her money's worth and that he did his job as a convenient excuse to keep an eye on Welles to see just how far he would get and/or as a means of protecting her family's reputation (which, he actually was... but his as well... especially since he and his deceased client were ultimately responsible for a snuff-film and a girl's murder). Furthermore, Welles makes it clear that he would only be working directly with her and that her relationship with her attorney Longdale was her own... so since both Mrs. Christiansen and (by extention) Welles were determined to investigate this matter and leave no stone unturned... all Longdale could do was hope that Welles would either fail and/or give up (which almost did happen a number of times along the way). ** "If caught, he'd have to implicate the deceased Mr. Christiansen, thereby embarrassing Mrs. Christiansen" **. Mrs. Christiansen was already well away of this... which is why she had decided to use a private investigator in lieu of going to the police (in other words, to "keep it in the family" in the event she learned of some nightmare that she was dreading to be true... which, unfortunately... was the case). ** "Dino and "Machine" being close friends - good eye - I didn't pick up on it myself. I wouldn't say they're close friends, since "Machine" arrives and leaves wearing the mask" **. When Welles ambushes and beats up Eddie, he demands to know where "Machine" lives. Eddie pleads that he doesn't know and that he's Dino's boy and that he always wears a mask. This is probably the only time I believe anything that Eddie says. -- Considering that the story of "8mm" takes place in 1998-1999 and that the events of the snuff-film and Maryanne's murder take place about six years earlier (around 1992 or 1993)... AND... -- ...that the film used to make the snuff-film was discontinued about a year or so before Maryanne's killing (likely an intentional foresight & precaution on Dino's part to better prevent it being traced back to him)... ...this would imply that Dino and "Machine" have known of each other for quite a while and well-before they made the snuff-film and continued their relationship in the years since considering that "Machine" has appeared in Dino's subsequent works since then... (ie, in Dino's "Devil in the Dungeon" video when Welles spots and identifies 'Machine' for the second time and speculates that both Dino and "Machine" know of each other on some level). In summary... if Dino and "Machine" knew of each other prior to 1992-1993 and have worked together since then, than it stands to reason that they know of each other quite well, perhaps are close friends (especially when considering the circumstances)... and maybe Dino even knows "Machines" mother... or... perhaps the two may even be related.

He also doesn't really sound like a fan meeting someone he admires - too detached, you can tell he doesn't like being there. He should've come up with a better story, like "I am here on the behalf of someone else who wants an original movie from you". The slimy lawyer (spoiler alert) would set him up anyway, but at least this scene would've been more credible. Peter Stormare is stealing the show btw.

@genemaguire I think the "funniest" scene (if you could even call it 'funny')... ...was just after Dino burns the film-footage and Tom Wells breaks down... and starts mocking them for all still being a bunch of "low-time motherf**kers" even after all the 'millions' that they got paid. As it turns out... those three cronies only got about $50,000 to split among them while Longdale pocketed the rest. When they all learn of this, they (Dino, Eddie and 'Machine') all turn their attention away from Tom and back to Longdale. As they're closing in on him, "Machine" picks up a knife and hides it behind his back as he makes his way towards Longdale. Ohhhh.... as if Longdale didn't know what our boy 'Machine' likes to do with a knife. 😈🔪🔪

@edrodriguez4822 I concur. I never was a big fan of Cage as an actor. Tbh... I always thought he was quite overrated. That said, I think he did very well in this movie. Which is saying alot, as I'm not a fan of his.

Not much of a future when their brain and blood ruin their new car's upholstery. Colombian sicarios had lots of toys, sex, and money. But, they died by lead poisoning--in the thousands.
