Seki Sensei’s father was also an Iaido master, and he learned Muso Shiden Ryu from his father when he was 9 years old. I have many friends worldwide who train in this Ryuha, so I thought many people would benefit from videos of Seki Sensei introducing his skills.
So today, Seki sensei, an 8th Dan Iaido master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shiden Ryu, will introduce 6 Kata in parts 1 and 2 of this video. However, please understand that there are many different versions of the Kata of Musō Shiden Ryu, and what we introduce in this video is what Seki Sensei has learned from his father. It is not the absolute way of performing the techniques, and we have no intention of denying other versions.

I greatly appreciate the first kata (Ukigumo), as Seki-sensei demonstrates the difference between "proper" response and an effective response. When Seki-sensei was pivoting on a narrow cross-legged stance ("X-stance"), I saw this was a very dangerous scenario he had to respond to while at a tactical disadvantage, such as a very confined space. In a previous video Seki-sensei showed how to use an off-balance position to generate a powerful response to a sudden attack, nd we see that same principle at work here.

The situations seem to be different from those of eishin ryu. Master Seki’s explanation is very helpful for understanding of each movement of kata.

Thank you Sensei for the technique. All cultures in the world have something valuable and wise to share. I miss Japan, though I am a guyjing one of my greatest honors in life was to visit from North to South. I wish I would have been based there, I believe that martial arts study would have been one of the disciplines of such a beautiful country with wonderful people. Thank you once again for sharing.

I’m also an Eishin-Ryū practitioner and noticed that all of the movements are similar with some slight variations!

That is because is Muso Shinden is a branch ryu that comes from Eishin Ryu. Eishin is considered legitimate koryu. Shinden is more modern.

Stabbing immediately after you draw makes a huge amount of sense, because it is the only time that you know exactly where the tip is so you can be very accurate, especially as the katana is curved.

Correct me if I’m wrong: in tsuredachi Seki-sensei twists his lower body in the opposite direction from the upper body creating torque which he uses to quickly change direction after stabbing and cut the second adversary.

Are the katana being used steel or the the aluminum version used for Iaito?

I believe they are steel, as seki sensei uses his own personal katana for many of the kata shown

Many experienced teachers use real weight swords with such lightness that the sword seems to weigh nothing and in the video clearly says "real sword". And even if the sword was made of aluminum alloys, the 2.6 shaku must have a reinforced construction and have more weight.
