I study a different style so there are some aspects of the kata that I didn't understand. That being said, I really enjoyed the video. His cuts are really on plane! Great practitioner of his style!

I have no idea what this means, but it seems interesting.
Thanks for posting. Do you know which year this was?

I'm going to say 2003 since he won the competition that year, but I'm not entirely sure if that's correct (and because people attend multiple years). I'll check back through the video, as there are dates listed. I'll confirm.

So far the info we know: 1) he was 59 when the video was shot. 2) He is 76 this year. A little bit of math might give us the answer :)

It certainly requires a well-developed bodily sense to be able to use live blades with little to no chance of injury. If one loses attention even for a moment, serious injury could result, and I've seen examples of that.

Total nonsense .... this art has been turned into theatre. This is not a real martial art. It's a tea ceremony.

You'd be mistaken in thinking what you see here is an art that lacks usefulness. You will not see the full capability of this art on KZbin. I have seen senior teachers that could move with perfect control at any speed and with a perfect command of spacing between themselves and their opponent. What you see in this video is a very tiny window into a very deep martial art.

There’s no more samurai or a need to cut a person in half lol, so most Japanese martial arts evolved more into a way of meditation i think, also it’s good exercise but mainly it’s to keep the tradition alive.
