I would love to hear what comes up. Horus sent the Dangels to the farthest corners of the galaxy prior to his full fledged rebellion, because he thought them to be too loyal to have a chance to convice them... on the other hand, LEJ being a borderline traitor would really fit their whole guilt-fetish. Maybe we'll never know, as only the most trusted members of the inner circle know the darkest secrets slumbering within the rock ;)

Well they are loyal through and through. That's why the Fallen are such a pain in the back. When half the Legions turned traitor and the galaxy is in flames, it would be near impossible to defend the legions reputation, especially when their primarch disappeared. And then there is the Brotherhood aspect. If you knew your brother is in trouble, you would try to solve it internally. Ok you would probably use less torture, but the idea is the same.

LEJ in the lore was NOT LOYAL, HE WAS NOT DISLOYAL. He never actually picked a side after he left Guilliman and his Imperium Secudus with Sanguinius in charge. He braved the Ruin Storm because he HAD to go get something, a very special something, after he drove off the Death Guard AND the Iron Hands he refused to attack the Death Guard or Iron Hands on retreat and in fact held his fire even when the Death Guard were making an end run around the peace he brokered. When The Lion had this item in hand it warned him about Caliban. However again, this special item was more powerful than any could guess and it saw the truth. Again, later on a particular Fallen was captured and laughed at the Dark Angels because he stated flatly that HE CAUSED THE TWO SIDES TO FIGHT. That there was no real disloyalty besides a small cadre he controlled and that HE is the one who fired on The Lion's fleet in order to force Luther and the Lion to fight. His goal was to bring BOTH of them down at the behest of Chaos. At the last moment The Lions very special self-aware item saved BOTH of them from the plot and has kept The Lion and tended him all these millennia. Luther being consumed by guilt over believing the lies of Chaos and that traitor in his command is still alive and mad. Mind you, it is likely that the same special item is keeping him alive as he isn't all "chaosed" out just mad. Cypher was a very special person and he isn't a Fallen. Remember that as far as anyone from the period of the Great Crusade is concerned the entire current Imperium is apostate and evil. The Lion's special toy is what keep whisking Cypher about the universe and time, it, after all, is capable of doing this. It could move entire planets if it wanted to. In fact, as far as what is written it's power is absolutely unlimited and it has only ever feared the Lion, no one else, and is otherwise mostly disinterested in the goings on of mortal and fleshy things. In my own mind this "thing" is likely the only example of the "living machine race" that was made by the Old Ones in their war so long ago.

Winters could you please tell in what books is mentioned that Lion played for both sides as you said. All Horus Heresy books I have read never mention that. Luther Lion's adoptive father was corrupted by Chaos and he turned part of the chapter. Battle between them destroyed Caliban but I never found any mention that Lion was influenced by Chaos.

It's actually in a 40k novel by Gav Thorpe. And it isn't stated as fact so much as it was insinuated by a captured member of the Fallen. The whole point was to make it ambiguous, so you could choose to believe it or not.

I am trying to get as much of the HH books as I can but they are hard to come by in my part of ancient Terra. :) I am genuinely interested in HH because all sides were being manipulated and Chaos tried to influence all of them. So who was traitor and who was loyalist was never clear cut. Even the Emperor had an agenda and I am sure had he lived he would probably replace the space marines, like he replaced thunder warriors. Emperors ultimate goal, or the goal we are lead to believe, was to save humanity from Chaos. And he did a lot of really bad things to accomplish that. The story Last Church for me was fantastic. Especially with all the knowledge I had that is not mentioned in that story. GW writers created an fantastic world where a lot of individuals are pushing for their agenda firmly convinced they are true and noble and other are corrupted. But in the end nothing is as it seems. Thanks a lot for the review winters. Although I play the noble and furious descendants of the first Chapter Master Nassir Amit i really enjoyed your review.

If I remember the novel Fallen Angels correctly there where only 10000-12000 Dark Angels stationed on Caliban with Luther, of these Dark Angels we know that around half chose not to support Luther. Accounting for all the different factions that the Dark Angels of Caliban split into, it seems like 4000 is about right. Now again I might be wrong, but that is the impression I got from reading Fallen Angels, which I would consider to be up-to-date lore.

One thing people keep forgetting us that Primaris Marines aren't all Guilliman's new test-tube babies. Some of them are existing marines retro-fitted with the new organs. Slap some of that in your existing Company Veterans, and you've got some nice Hellblasters and Lieutenants

Actually that's been debunked, someone on a live stream got it wrong. You cannot upgrade existing marines to Primaris. This has been categorically stated a number of times now.

grim resolve with plasma weapons will be awesome. You can overcharge and dont have to fear losing a model since you can reroll ones even when no captain etc. is nearby. Dark angels were always plasma heavy, but this will be on a different level :)

A lackluster codex. A few points drops, a few nerfs, overlapping ignore leadership, one good warlord trait, no sacred standards it's all just boring and doesn't excite me to play my army at all. The one thing I'm happy about is the Plasma stratagem and I'll just be loading up as many hellblasters as possible in Azreal's aura and spamming it as many times as I can.

Land speeder storm should never have ravenwing, since scouts cannot be part of the inner circle. Storm raven could go either way, but makes sense as a transport it doesn't have it.

You need to learn your lore champ. The Lion managed to get 3 legions (BA, WS and Puppies) to help the emperor and smoke the Nightlords while Girlyman sat there being jealous o the 1st Legions Drill

+James Taylor. Okay. I am re-reading through the Horus Heresy series from the Black Library right now. I'm back up to Nemesis, which is one of my favourites in the series. Shame about Eristede Kell, the Vindicare. Never expected him to turn up in the way he did in the latest Garro book. He was a fantastic character. I will continue to learn my lore. Great suggestion.

To be fair a lot of that stuff is mentioned later in the series. Lion was tied up with imperium secundus and he, Sanguinius and Guilliman were all hunting Curze and getting screwed by the ruinstorm and they all believed the Emperor already dead. Angels of Caliban and Ruinstorm clears up a lot of the ambiguity surrounding the Dark Angels.

Blood angels comes across as more obviously powerful with supers mash combos, dark angels feel much more tactical and tricksy using saves and rerolls to keep themselves in the game and weaken units over time whilst zipping about taking objectives

Jink is still somewhat underwhelming, inner circle is OK, but why would they advertise that you are able to field 10 man squads with the grim resolve rule and don't lose too many, but inner circle cancels this out? And what does grim resolve give your Deathwing/ravenwing or half of your Greenwing?

Yeap. This kinda was the reason why I dislike the codex (before reading it). Grim Resolve is hardly a proper DA rule, as it's barely any use for DW/RW. Grim Resolve is not much more than a poor mans captain bubble in the first place. Hardly comparable to -1 to hit, or Fall Back and Shoot, or re-rolling charge rolls for example. I was really hoping for the 5+ Overwatch instead. I do enjoy the 'fluffyness' of the stratagems though, but overall this leaves me feeling pretty unsatisfied.

Most likely, since it is a transport, the Stormraven wasnt assigned to the Ravenwing but to the normal Greenwing units. Thats why they wouldnt have the Ravenwing or Jink rules

Well, the Stormraven is also quite heavy. For as far as realism goes in sciencefiction, the thing is probably simply too clunky to do extensive evasive maneuvers with.

Winters, I do not know that much but I think the stratagem The Lion and the Wolf may be fluffy amd kind of good. Get a Deathwing Ancient and a Wulfen with an Apothecary on hand. Both units will survive the fight no matter what and the ancient now has S5, A4, WS2+. Four attack with a lower fist hitting on 3 for unwieldly with S10 D3 damage seems pretty good, even more if you go the Storm Shield & Thunder Hammer route with the flat 3 damage. Especially if you just go and heal that wound on the first round. I can see some use there in the few mixed armies, as you can always offer even a Blood Claw. Or you could do it for a Lone Wolf unit and a Wolf Priest, make him take the Storm Shield and Hammer agains vehicles or claws to shred infantry.

I have always wanted to see something more unique from the Dark Angels. Specifically, the Hexagrammaton structure carrying through from the old legion. Each component of the legion has it's own specialty, as the current wings show. Also, archaeotech. The Rock is a warp-capable planetoid with an extensive hold that dates back to the great crusade, even before. We should see heaps of old tech (something partly addressed with the different models of terminators). And again, the Rock is a warp-capable planetoid, the Dark Angels should have something that represents the sort of battlefield support that would provide!

DA will never get those units. Those units are 1st Company veterans in regular SM Chapters. DA 1st Company is the DW. Your friend can use his Combi-Plasma guys as company veterans. They just don't get the special issue ammo.

Awesome review. Shame the special banners didn't make a comeback but on the whole there are some welcome and potentially very nastee combinations out there. As for the Stormravens not having the Ravenwing keyword, most likely it's cos they have been assigned to the line company's. RW would probably use T-hawks for the extra space. Sounds like my stormeagle to budge up a bit on the shelf and make some room for another angel of death(We could at least use those in 7th ed to ferry some dudes upfield, either that or d-pods or caestus assault rams.)

Hey winters, thanks for the review. I feel it's a very lacklustre codex, just seems to be a rules push towards making primaris "the most suitable units" for us, which I am totally against fluffwise. Glad they have kept the ravenwing quite interesting but as a player who got into the DA cause of deathwing I'm am consistently left dissappointed. Also massively saddened to see that azzy has been nerfed (there goes my Greenwing gunlines main reason for not getting gubbed) not sure when he's going to be supporting bikes so thanks GW for that...

didn't play 7th edition as the game was so bad by then, 7th was easily the worst edition GW has ever created, hence the reason why they scrapped it so quickly and started from the ground up with 8th. I own every DA codex save 7th edition. This one will be the worst that I own for them. Last weeks codex was a very strong BA codex that felt fluffy and competitive. Then this thing comes out. Relics are bad save 1 or 2 at the most, psychic powers are bad save 1 or 2, warlord traits are bad save 1 or 2. Grim resolve is worthless for 2/3rds of the army (DW and RW). There are a few good strategem, but far too many fluffy and situational strategems. Being a DW player, with some RW elements, i'm very disappointed.

Unless it changed from the index it gives a plus 1 to ld and when a model is slain roll a d6 on a 4+ it lets a model attack either shooting or cc from it.

So Ravenwing get a 4++ jink roll when they advance which is great for the Black Knights with their assault 2 Plasma Talons but not for the Nephilim & Dark Talon with the heavy weapons... And having a Stormraven is good but no Storm Talon/Stormhawk is a shame. Grim Resolve re-roll 1's for shooting if they hadn't moved will benefit Greenwing only but is utterly wasted with Deathwing & Ravenwing... And of course no Lion but we all knew that was going to happen.

Shouldn't come as a surprise that RW come out as the winner...it's always that way. Although a unit of Cataphracti DW Terminators with 4++ sitting on objectives could be useful while the RW are running around shooting everything. DA don't need, and won't get, the Storm Talon/Hawk because they have the Nephilim and Dark Talon. Plus the Dark Talon droped 40 pts!!

+newtpondskipper. Interesting that I came across as biased. I absolutely love the DA fluff and have said on record many times that if I was starting again now - knowing everything that I know - and if I could only pick one army, that would be the Dark Angels. To my mind they have the most intriguing narrative, circles within circles, and the Lion is a boss. In terms of gameplay as well they appeal.

100% DISAPPOINTED seriously though this codex seems pretty BLAH, I was expecting The Lion and maybe some NEW units not just primaris nonsense. The on going joke about DA being chaos HA... HA... haaa... Seriously the whole thing about The Lion being chaos would really ruin most Dark Angel players day... I don't want my favorite chapter to be "chaos" or possibly having The Lion turn out to be chaos. Such a let down *sigh*

Really, did you even see the blood angel codex? that alone should have showed you that you would get no new units except primaris. DA being chaos is just a meme, nothing to get upset about. Ultimately cant really say the book is a let down without even having had a single game with it. It's not like you are ad mech getting screwed with no transports, this codex like all marines will be fine.

Couldn't help but cringe when you said the Lion was playing both sides and half the legion joined Chaos. It seems even big youtubers who should really know better have been taken in by that utter misinformation. No book shows this. Plenty show the direct opposite. Please don't perpetuate such myths.

Lion is the most loyal primarch to have ever lived. He would never even consider joining chaos, or betrayal of any kind. Horus fooled him to the other side of the galaxy, because he knew this. He knew he'd get a sword between his ribs for ever suggesting betrayal to him. a Greater Demon tried to tempt the Lion. He impaled it. Curze was taunting the Lion, that in the future people will doubt his loyalty, because he was too late to save the emperor. He impaled Curze saying 'I don't care, loyalty is it's own reward' Dark Angels are not really manipulative either. They are secretive. OFC!!! If the codex will now start changing the lore, it will go against everything the Dark Angels are and have been, making the codex even more of a disappointment. Dark Angels loyalty being questionable is a really old, really bad joke.

Russ and Lion were/are two sides of the same coin - both extremely emotional, with Russ being open and Lion being introverted. Their clash was essentially because Lion couldn't keep his emotions in check. It's also the main reason he and Guilliman fell out (that and Lion bombed the crap out of Ultramar...). The difference between Bobby G and Russ, is that Russ, being an emotional person could understand El'Johnson, which is why they actually became really close...
