My mother also played this on the piano along with a jazzed up version called, The Bumble Boogie. I couldn't believe how fast she could play. She was a childhood prodigy and a virtuoso. She's been gone quite awhile now. I played saxophone as a kid but not like this kid. Amazing.

Nearly flawless circular breathing in 8th grade? It looks like he triples on alto, bari, and soprano. Put that together with his technical skills and that kid is going to be a monster one day.
@PimpedKoalas
@PimpedKoalas 7 жыл бұрын
Judging by your comment, I think it's safe to assume that you're not a very experienced musician or else you wouldn't have said circular breathing and tripling instruments is easy. I'm not claiming that I'm anything special either, but it's just ridiculous to make such a claim and is most likely a brag. In the very least, you're in no position to put yourself above this student. To get a mature sound on the first saxophone you play, it will take years to develop. Usually well past eighth grade. This student already has a very mature tone at his age, and judging from his playing, I wouldn't doubt that he has a similar devotion to his other two instruments. Most band directors wouldn't have an eighth grader double or triple anyway, since it generally won't sound great and the band isn't great to begin with. Which goes to show that he is most likely very advanced on three instruments while even the best players at that age are usually decent on one. Circular breathing is not an easy skill period. Yes, it comes easier to some, however to get a seamless circular breath (not bending pitch, stopping air flow, pinching mouthpiece) while playing sixteenth notes at that tempo is a very difficult thing to do, and I'd argue that most professionals would try to find ways around it since most people prefer to circular breath on sustained notes. Chromaticism actually has nothing to do with the difficulty of the piece. On a trombone, say, sixteenth notes for something like Carnival of Venice are much more difficult than sixteenth notes for Flight, because chromatic notes are actually physically easier to play in succession for a trombone. But for a saxophone, the chromatic scale does not offer any shortcuts that make it easier to play than other things. So while yes, you are more likely to practice a chromatic scale than the sixteenth note runs in Incantation and Dance, the fact that they are chromatic in no way contributes to a lack of impressiveness because the physical dexterity it takes is mostly all the same. And yes, I understand there are other very talented young musicians. I don't think they take away from the fact that this kid is very good at what he does and will probably continue on to be amazing.

Someone give that kid’s private teacher a bonus check! Breathing techniques like that take excellent teaching to establish this early in his career. Music is one of those things that take a surprising amount of very hands on education. I remember learning flute, piano and classical voice. Flute and voice are more physically demanding than people realize. I did squats. I had to resist getting pushed in the gut. I had to lift the piano. Sing and do breathing exercises while laying on my back. I imagine this kid has had to do some of that too! That is a dedicated student, but also a good teacher behind that student!
