Eighth of January is a great old fiddle tune, also recorded by Jimmy Driftwood as a vocal known as The Battle of New Orleans. I remember first hearing this tune on a Nitty Gritty Dirt band album that my dad used to play all the time. And what better fiddle tune to record on the 8th of January.

The tune, the Eight of January is much older than Bluegrass music. Look for more music like this under the heading "old-time Kentucky Fiddle music."

That's true. 8th of January is a very old folk tune. I'm playing it more in a bluegrass style because of the people I'm playing with. :)

A little trivia, Jimmy Driftwood wrote the words to this tune as a history lesson for his students, he wrote other ones for his class which never got the attention that this one did thanks to Johnny Horton recording it.

Is this the Indoor Midwest Annual Bluegrass Festival at Holiday Inn in Eureka,MO, by Six Flags in January ? Every 1st weekend in January ?

This was actually at the Colorado State fiddle championships in Denver Colorado, the first weekend of the National Western Stock Show. 🙂

No Joke. Every year in Eureka,Missouri,first weekend in January,they have a big indoor Bluegrass Festival. And everyone that picks,plays, jams, everywhere there's a spot there's a few(turns into more) jamming in hallways, Motel Rooms,etc.. That's why I thought this was. Thanks.
