On August 23, 2024, during Ulchi Freedom Shield 24 at Kunsan Air Base, the 8th Security Force Squadron faced a high-stakes simulated ground attack at a location known as 'Big Coyote'. Initially overwhelmed, the squadron requested aerial support to turn the tide.
The U.S. Marine Corps' Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 165 quickly responded, deploying UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper helicopters for surveillance and support. With this strategic intervention, the 8th Security Force Squadron regained control of 'Big Coyote' and halted the ground assault.
Ulchi Freedom Shield 24 is an annual joint exercise essential for reinforcing the U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Agreement, underscoring the U.S. commitment to the alliance. This exercise also serves as a crucial opportunity for the 8th Security Force Squadron to test and refine their response capabilities, ensuring they are prepared to deploy air power in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s area of responsibility whenever needed.
