**READ DESCRIPTION**
Cold Starting the 8V71 in the plow for the first time in a few months, took a few attempts but it did start.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE TELLING ME I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THESE: You are right! The point of hte video is not to sound knowledgeable about detroits as I know next to nothing about these old two stroke beasts. The point of the video is to show how this thing starts after sitting for a long time. Yes I know I said old mechanical diesels with no heating for the engine.....YES I KNOW IT HAS A BLOCK HEATER!!!! What I meant was no intake heater, no glow plugs, and no grid heater. Yes I know if it was plugged in it would have started right up, but that was not an option as this thing sits off in the boonies out of the way of the parking lot. So constructively criticize all you want, but please refrain from profanity.

Guy that plows up my street in the winter has an old 70s or 80s ford truck. Think it has a cummins though. It’s a town truck. It’s been plowing my street ever since. It’s all yellow and has a lot of rust but he says it’s an awesome truck. Has a 10 speed. Pretty capable little dump truck. I rode in it with him once and he let me take it for a drive. I drive trucks also, I work at a towing recovery company. It’s a real mechanical old truck. Fun to drive it it was. No Jake brake on it I think, so it probably had a cummins engine a smaller one. Maybe mid 200hp to early 300hp. I don’t think it had a Jake I don’t remember if it did when I took it for a drive. I never hear Jake brake when he’d go up and down the street so I don’t think it has one. It’s just a plow truck. A real cool lil old plow dump truck looks like this one here in this video it is a ford

When it is 'hunting' on a cold start your idle needs adjusting. Call The Bus Monkey and he will help you. He is awesome. You would have been totally fine letting wam up 7-10 minutes. Totally worth keeping and will out perform all your newer trucks easily 25+ years. Gem there! Detroit Diesels, I have four of them and each solid! 7

I have a Military HEMTT with an 8V92 in it its turbocharged and is rated at 500 HP and of course a 2 stroke! In some of my other trucks I have Cummins both turbo charged and naturally aspirated and a CAT in and old OshKosh ex-Navy snow plow truck and out off the Mercedes, Cummins and CAT engines I own I definitely am the most fond of the Detroit, I love the sound, the power always right there at the top of the list and this is in a truck that is 8 wheel drive and weighs 39,000 pounds EMPTY!

@Rick Delair.... Not sure where you get your information from, but that is NOT true at all. Not all 6-71's were "238 hp" and neither were the 8-71's all "318"hp.... there's was (still is) over 30 different injectors available for the series 71... and that does NOT include custom sets for ultra high-performance engines. Engine output also depended (of course) on outside ambient temperatures, humidity, altitude, cam timing, piston type, max. load rpm settings, intake port design, etc, etc.... in other words, they were Not all "238's or 318's". Also, the "N" only designates Naturally aspirated, Not "4 valves per cylinder". The 2 valve heads became an "optional" arrangement after 1957 and were out of production after April 1965, and in "automotive" applications, the 2 valve heads were only used on city transit buses up until 1962, otherwise, they were used in industrial and smaller marine applications, only.
@josephheston9238
@josephheston9238 3 жыл бұрын
@@Romans--bo7br I thought the N suffix meant that it has needle injectors because a lot of 53s and 71s did not have the N suffix and were naturally aspirated.

Why do they appear to surge as in sucking in air and not enough fuel, or is this just how old 2 strokes work with a supercharger.
@johnstoffel5885
@johnstoffel5885 5 жыл бұрын
The oil in the governor is cold so it surges until the oil warms up and thins out. It's normal operation.
@josephheston9238
@josephheston9238 3 жыл бұрын
First they don't suck in air. The blower pushes the exhaust gases out whilst priming the cylinder with fresh air. This is known as scavenging since there is no intake valve but intake ports. BTW, it's a supercharger on a 4-stroke, but a blower on a 2-stroke, a luxury for the former and a necessity for the latter.
