I can't believe this scene is even real. That priest is the best thing to ever happen for gay Eddie. He's not allowing himself to feel joy and that ties in to him dating women because he feels like he has to. He knows how to get the woman, because it's what he's been taught, but he can't bring his heart to figure out how to keep her. Also the metaphors in this episode? Insane. Picking “clean and pure” water over the small joy of fruit juice, the mustache being a disguise bc the lafd doesn't allow beards. Even him saying he's straight is a Chekhov's gun. Eddie could've been skeptical of him for any other reason but he assumed he was being hit on. That was a writer's choice, along with the priest not echoing him and instead saying he's celibate. Lastly, notice how when the priest says Eddie's mustache is handsome, he starts to indulge the priest's advances a bit more because he already did his due diligence of saying he's straight. In his mind, he did what he was supposed to, and what happens after that isn't his business. It's up to God, if you will.

Eddie went to confession earlier in the episode and Father Brian was the priest who listened to Eddie confess. Eddie is used to older and very judgemental priests and didnt get a good look at the guy listening to his confessions, so he was probably shocked to see that it was a younger priest who listened to him. What I liked about this scene is how the priest told Eddie that he was punishing himself. I couldn’t agree more. He has definitely been punishing himself since he lost his wife because he blames himself still that he could have done more to save her life although it was nothing he could have done. It’s the grief!! Then the stuff going on with Christopher, him questioning himself as a father and pretty much feeling like he abandoned him because of him not processing his grief properly as well as internal issues he had going on. So he self-sabotage, messed up things with the women that he dated after his wife passed. I really think that in the coming episodes, he is going to finally embrace being happy, get Christopher back, although the pain of losing her will never go away, be able to accept that it was not his fault that his wife lost her life. I think the next woman he ends up with, it will work out because of the healing that has taken place. He is not going to feel guilty from moving on.
