The world was forever different after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. 2,977 souls were taken by 19 hijackers using 4 different passenger airliners. Countless police officers and firefighters, active duty and retired, rushed to ground zero to support their fellow Americans.
Six hundred and fifteen miles across the county, a young junior in high school watched as the second plane struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center. That’s when Ryan “Birdman” Parrott left his classroom for the Navy Recruiting Office and committed to serving his country. In 2015, after serving 8 years as a Navy SEAL, exiting the Navy and starting two charities dedicated to supporting Veterans and First Responders, he had the profound honor and privilege to get an inside look at the FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum by some of New York City’s finest.

TheBigHase Well I am originally from NY , born and raised. I do believe the true Americans who live this country and the true New Yorkers have not and never will forget. But I have to disagree or maybe I should state it as the people who hold political seats as Mayor, Governor, and others apparently have as they destroy the very city that many worked so hard to rebuild not only structures but their lives. I don’t agree that all New Yorkers haven’t forgotten or those who may consider themselves New Yorkers, but as we can see, they are not. The minute DeBlasio and Cuomo let those protesters in their city after the deplorable disgraceful remark made by the female leader of Chaz I lost all respect for them as it was apparent to me , they lost all respect for those not only were direct victims of 9-11 but all true Americans. Beyond disgraceful to let them step one foot in that city after that remark. I swear after I heard what she said, if I would have been standing there I would have grabbed her right by her throat and if would have taken an army yo get me off of her that’s how infuriated I was. It took days for me to stop thinking about it so much because it was just so disrespectful, disgraceful, unAmerican and so nonchalant and uncaring. Like she didn’t give a flying flip. Those two just let them in there without any hesitation.

I’m a pharmacist and I work in New York City. I remember the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. We were all in shock. I work in a military hospital, surrounded by Veterans and active duty military personnel. I was not afraid; but just very angry ( and ad a daughter of a Marine, I know how to keep composure). I am so proud of our Veterans, our soldiers, police, firefighters, paramedics. These are the Americans who have the gravitas and courage to hold our nation together in a time of crisis and peacetime. Call me a silly optimist, but in my heart and soul I truly feel that no force of evil can break the spirit and strength of our nation . Semper Fi!

Thank you for this! As a former First Responder who worked on Long Island, although we showed up as soon as we could get there on the 11th; there were already literally THOUSANDS of first responders, construction workers, other medical personnel and other volunteers that were likely just fellow New Yorkers, ignoring the many obvious dangers in and around the pile, trying to find survivors. We were sent to Shea Stadium where we basically camped out for 2 weeks, going into the pile first, the morning of the 13th and every other day after that. The love and camaraderie I saw and experienced first-hand, was like nothing else I had ever experienced in over 20 years in medicine. I had headed up disaster management for medical teams in the South, off and on for years; but obviously, nothing I had been through before even came close to just that first week, that first night, while no one could sleep as we tried to see through the smoke, haze and debris over the river, easily making its way to our post in the parking lot of Shea Stadium. There was so much that happened, some of which I still don’t talk about. The guys in the firehouse we worked with, and a few others on the medical team-we STILL call each other every year. Anytime one of the guys gets sick with another 9-11 connected illness, we all get contacted. We’ve lost 5 from our small firehouse alone. While our medical team was only there for 2 weeks, most of our house was there for over a month, some stayed much longer. They were told it was safe, they knew it wasn’t, but they wouldn’t leave either way. I had an unrelated heart attack a few months after 9/11. When I was wheeled out of the cardiac Cath lab, there were at least 6 guys waiting outside. They never told me how they found out, but I had visitors from firehouses around the area every day I was in the hospital. It shocked me because I had only been working at the firehouse for about 6 weeks when 9/11 happened. I was a newcomer from the Deep South who had actually gone to New York to see specialists about a condition that would end my career. But they “adopted” me, the younger guys called me “mom”. Some still do when they call to check on me. When I left New York that next year, the Chief insisted I give him my kid’s contact numbers. A few years later when they couldn’t reach me on the anniversary because I was, yet again, in the hospital, that afternoon, my room filled with flowers and cards. FDNY, whether in the city or outside, are one very special group of men and women with a dedication to the job and each other, I have never seen anywhere else. In those weeks after 9/11 it felt as if the entire country, regardless of sex, race, socio-economic level, political ideology or ethnicity-we were ALL together, for each other. When this pandemic found its way to the US, I naively thought we would see that again, knowing that a virus doesn’t discriminate, we would band together to fight and win. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and even as we see the 19th anniversary of 9/11 pass; it seems like the divisions grow almost daily, with people predicting that members of the opposite political party will become “bloodthirsty killers” if they win an election, and that this pandemic will end Nov 4. NO ONE will become “killers” after the election, EXCEPT for this virus that doesn’t discriminate for sex, race, ethnicity nor political ideology. It’s an equal opportunity infector and over 200,000 American families are grieving their loved ones lost to this virus. We NEED to pull together. It’s NOT too late. We’ve proved in the past what we, as Americans, are capable of in a crisis; and we MUST do it again.

Thank you for posting this. This year more than ever I worry that our first responders will be overlooked and neglected because of a few bad apples. Shame on us as a nation. What happened to George Floyd was 100% absolutely wrong. Another tragedy is forgetting all the good our first responders do every day.

Thank you, Joanna. We need to come together in this time. Unfortunately, we often forget what makes us a great nation. Men and women of the #FDNY and #NYPD should serve as a reminder of who we can be as a country.

@Joanna Fritz You know what's wrong? A Black 5-year old girl who got killed by Black Street Gangs in Chicago, simultaneously as everyone was rioting over a repeated offender in the name of Floyd. So spare us the selective outrage just because of the MSM. Also, in the instance of Police Officers, yes, there are rotten apples. But fact is that police violence/brutality had been decreasing for years. So, instead open your eyes and mind to all the *sacrifices* your ancestors have made for you to live a life so bountiful and blessed today. The 9/11 responders won't be forgotten by Americans, but they may by said MSM and swampy politicians/bureaucrats who've been sending American sons & daughter overseas. Peace through strength is the answer. The "resolve" of America and unity lies within.

First responders poem No one really knows what you all go through But there are many of us who want to say that we appreciate you Police, first responders, and all branches of the military Your protection and life saving skills are needed and quite necessary No one is perfect, let’s all look in the mirror and know this fact is true But the costliness, and willingness of your service shows for the most part, that it’s not about you And how many of us would have already died if you didn’t do what you do? Oh sure there’s always good and bad in every bunch But it’s interesting who first we call when ever we’re in a crunch I want to take time and say I’m sorry for those who don’t recognize The sacrifices you make daily to save our sometimes ungrateful lives Only God knows the toll it’s taken on you, your well being, and family And how could we ever repay the damage done to your body? It may be hard but you’ll have to try and not listen to what nay sayers say And know there’s Someone greater who makes sure we all receive our due pay For now just know many of us love you and appreciate your service at the end of the day!❤️🇺🇸❤️ Oh and I’d be remiss if I failed to mention Romans 13:1-5 is where we need to direct everyone’s attention.

Hell yes. With all of this "fuck the police" mentality that has been running rampant America needs this message, and to remember that day. I was only 3 years old, so I don't remember anything from that day, however I will always say thank you to the first responders who were there that day and who are there every day to this day. I will always say thank you to those brave men and women who joined the fight to protect America and all her citizens, whether they're grateful for it or not.
