I came to Manhattan (I lived on 29th and Lexington) in August 2001 from London to spend the rest of the summer working in NYC (I'm Irish and spending a summer in the U.S was almost a rite of passage as a 21 year-old dying to see the world). My very first day of work at an Irish bar and restaurant around 32nd street near Penn Station was on September 11th 2001 at 10.00am. By the time I arrived for my first shift, (I was oblivious to the news until I got there) the whole city was already completely shut-down and consequently the only staff for the entire day was the owner, a chef and me. I met hundreds of people that day who had been working in or near the WTC...the fact that I had to help run a bar and restaurant with 2 other people protected me from really understanding the enormity of what was happening in the moment...I watch these documentaries and videos mainly because I have never been able to fully articulate what that day was like to live through but, somehow I get comfort from listening to the stories of all the survivors because they articulate it exactly...I will never forget a woman I met in the restroom of my work that day...she had seen one of the planes go past her office window in or near the WTC...she was covered in that white sooty/dust stuff but as she was telling me what had happened, she was constantly apologising to me about the soot she was covered in messing up the bathroom. When I think of 9/11, I think of that woman almost always first (I've always wondered how she dealt with it) and others who just walked in off the street shell-shocked and stood looking at the TV from morning to evening. I live back in the UK so rarely meet anyone who has had a similar experience.

I remember the day so well … but for different reasons. I was watching my father die in hospital… he had been sick for a long time and we ached to see him go to a better place. The tv screen in that room was a distraction of the saddest kind from my own personal pain. The collective pain of the victims and their families resonates with me now. Dad died September 28th… May he and all those people rest in eternal peace and Gods love light.❤️🩹

I was ten blocks away in a deli, grabbing a breakfast before heading uptown to my friend’s condo to take care of her cats while she was in London on business. I got off the train at 86 St. to walk the remaining blocks uptown, it was such a nice day. The first plane struck unbeknownst to me while I opened a bag of cat food. Strange, but I never watch TV, but after feeding the cats, I turned it on. I thought it was fake, a realistically bad new movie, but then I realized it wasn’t. I ended up staying there with the cats for the next week, living off the food, never going out. I think I had a breakdown of sorts. I couldn’t even watch more TV. I read my friend’s books, played with her cats, laid on the couch a lot and kept all the curtains closed. I’m just now watching some of the 911 videos. Who did it it? How? Why? I won’t pretend to know. Not at all unlikely it was not as we’ve been told. I quit walking for exercise and eventually moved to Kentucky.

I have seen quite a few videos about 9/11 and the things people did in the vain attempt to live, but the one image that I can never forget from all the material ever shown is of those forced to die by either burning alive or jumping to certain death, and them falling for what feels like an eternity, I will never be able to understand how they made that decision. This is one of the best 9/11 documentaries I have ever seen. I live in Ga and I was 22 or 23 and I was on the phone with a customer I was designing a kitchen (she lived there but had a rental here) and she screamed and said, Amber, omg... a plane just hit one of the towers. I watched Peter Jennings and recorded it for weeks. I think about 9/11 everyday. I don’t know if that is normal and I’m not sure why if affects me the way is does. My mom had recently died and I was newly married. Maybe it is because this was the first tragedy I remember as an adult. All I know is that I will never forget 9/11. It lays heavy on my heart and my mind. It is just still so unbelievable that this happened. How do you even come to terms with this if you live there or know someone there? If I think of it everyday, my god, I cannot even imagine what they go through. Really great documentary 😢💙

Father Mike was a great and loving man but over the years ive heard so many stories about his death. The main one being that he died outside kneeling to give last rites to a recent jumper, Even though that is totally something Father Mike would have done number one as a firefighter he would never have put himself in the position of being hit and killed by other jumper while giving last rites to a person that just jumped, really just think about it folks. Common sense. The absolute 100% true way that Father Mike was killed is that he was in the lobby with all the other chiefs firefighters, first responders etc. inside tower #1 when suddenly they all (the chiefs) heard the loud rumble of tower #2 coming down so as one group with Father Mike following behind the group everything went black but when they finally got light going and a little of the dust cloud thinned a fireman noticed Father Mikes Body at the bottom of one of the escalators with no pulse and not breathing. later they figured out that when they all ran to the area where the escalators were seeking shelter debris from tower #2 blew into where they all were and a big heavy piece of the debris struck Father Mike in the back of his neck killing him pretty much immediately. So no matter what you hear that is the true blue way that he was taken from everyone on that tragic day. I think of and pray for him and the family often he is a hero and will be missed.

I was an operations manager for an auto auction in Houston. Our sale day was Friday so, during the week, we busied ourselves with preparing for the next sale. As an ops manager, you're always out on the facility, I never spent more than an hour or two in my office, usually very briefly in the morning and then late in the evening for a couple of hours to catch up on e-mails. By the time I was told about the attack, both buildings had already fallen. But... we didn't have a TV on the facility, so the information we were getting was all over the place. I was told that it was a single plane, and it had somehow hit both buildings, and they had collapsed instantly. They said that one of the towers had collapsed three quarters of the way, and that the other had collapsed only one quarter of the way. I remember that seeming completely unreal, that it had to be a mistake. I had lived in New York for a year when I was around 20 years-old, and I knew that there was no way that a pilot would have flown that low over Manhattan... it was just impossible. A couple hours later, the president of the Auction went and bought a big 25 inch TV (they were still the big CRTs back then, we didn't have flat screens yet). He hooked it up and tuned in to one of the local channels. Reception wasn't great, but we could see it clearly enough to understand that this was way worse than what we had been told. I didn't get home that night until 7 or 8 PM... I sat up and watched it over and over again... and it still didn't seem real. The next day was the first time I realized there were no planes flying. We were on the flight path for Hobby, and not very far from it, so the planes were always loud when they flew over. All of a sudden it just hit me at how quiet it was. It was eerie hearing that kind of silence in a major city. And you could already feel it... America had changed. We were all changed forever.

2017 and it's still no easier watching these documentaries :( it's like watching it for the first time again whenever I watch something on 9/11. Don't think we will ever come to accept what happened and will only be accepted when the generation who witnessed this happen live are no longer around. We shouldn't have witnessed the horrors on that day and people shouldn't have died the way they did that day :( reading a book just now called "working stiff" written by a pathologist who worked some remains, she IDd one person after finding part of his cheque book imbedded deep in his muscle in his thigh, she IDd another woman thanks to her wedding ring which was on her hand attached to her arm which was..... buried deep in a firemans chest only found thanks to X-rays. The ripple effects from that day are huge :( the victims will never be forgotten, the tragedy may slowly fade away decades from now and certainly the struggle to accept what happened but the people we lost will never ever be forgotten 💞 hope everyone taken that day is resting in peace and I hope everyone who witnessed that day are striving to live the best life ever as tomorrow really isn't a given 💞xx

Well done documentary, I like the storytelling component. It’s a hard subject to begin to capture. Narrowing it to the human components, personal obversations, makes it absorbable. I had a friend lost and a friend saved that day. Impossible to forget living through this. Impossible.

I had a friend who worked in Security. Her name was Patricia Cunha. She had told me that Muslims were taking flying lessons in the US. She didn't even think much of it. Neither did I, because neither of us were expecting these people to do anything wrong. We just thought they wanted to learn how to fly planes. We talked for months. Then we stopped talking abruptly. Pat may have been stationed in New Mexico I think. So after the 9/11 incident, I put 2 & 2 together and realized these middle easterners had been learning to fly so they could participate in 9/11. I'm from Germany and on the 11th of September 2001 I was 3 months away from my 8th birthday. I remember I saw everything live on television and to this day I'm afraid of flying and when I hear the engine of a plane or a helikopter I get scared and think that it's crashing down. And if 9/11 had such a big impact on me, 6050 km away, I can only imagine what the people in New York and in the whole US must have felt like. I have phases of obsessivly watching 9/11 documentaries and I think that subconciously I may be doing this to try and understand what happened that day because as a child you don't. My thoughts are with those who lost their live or a loved one on this day! 🙏 Stay strong!❤

I remember exactly where I was that horrific day!...ending my night shift, around 8:00 AM, Houston Texas time, when the first plane hit!...the word got around fast,...and our security monitors where quickly tuned in to the live news broadcasts,...I rushed home, a mile away, turned on the tv,and watched the tower burning, for a little while,...and then watched as the second plane hit! ...I was already crying!...I knew many people where dieing!....crushed,burning, choking, falling, jumping, and screaming as they thought their last thoughts of their families and loved ones as they died!....and then the towers collapsed!...and I knew many more died then!...I cried for two days after that....I will NEVER forget that day!...R.I.P. You all!...WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

Thank you for watching my film. Your comment was right on. That is an amazing quote from Mike Margiotta. His brother Chuck was a FDNY fireman and died on Sept. 11, 2019. God Bless You!!

@@VoicesofHistory, people underestimate the pain of a brother's death. Couldn't understand why that woman was so tearful until I realised her brother, Mike, had died that day (am I right?). Today my brother would have been 63. He died 8 years ago but his death wasn't as tragic as Mike's. Your documentary was very well done.

9/11 still blows my mind. I had always wanted to go to New York, and finally got the chance when I was 15. Regardless of other people’s disbelief,I have always been a very spiritual person. As excited as I was the whole way there,I cried the whole 3 days in New York. I don’t know how to describe it but I felt like there was this unseen chaos going on. It was just an overwhelming feeling of sadness that took over me,especially when we went to View the New WTC. I’ll never be able to wrap my head around the horror the victims must have experienced,or the pain their families went through. Just hope they can heal and feel some happiness in knowing that their deaths brought the country together together and strengthened it in many ways.

@Loes C, thank you for the courage to write your comment. I was touched by it. As the producer of the film I can relate to what you said. 55:39; "This was history. We have fighting in Ireland and we have fighting in Israel and we have fighting in Lybia and all over, but it's not home. We don't live with that fear of going outside the door and something getting blown up or attacked, and that changed the face of history." This sentence says so much. This is the most American sentence ever I think. Historically, America has been at war with almost everyone while living a comfortable life. They have been casting that fear upon others for centuries. "We don't live with that fear of going outside the door and something getting blown up or attacked." That's right, but people in the countries you are at war with do. Every single day. 9/11 was the most horrific thing to ever happen, but it happens almost every day elsewhere. And we've become numb to that whilst remembering 9/11 almost on daily bases because of all the documentaries and videos. It just sounds so....cold.

Ive never been tgere, but I would like to some day,to meet some of you folks. God bkess you all, i wish tgat there was a way to take away your pain. But only God can do something like that. I know if i came to see the place where it all happened, I would feel your pain even more so. I pray for all if you you,i wish nothing but the best for you all. I still, sometimes have a gard time believe these things really happened. To all of you who are members of FDNY,you are all my heroes, thats how many of us feel. God bless you, from Joliet, illinois.
