Me, I weep over the scene in Haderslev towards the end, where the big Danish soldier, which earlier complained he can't function without his morning coffee, they run past an old woman, who is serving coffee for the Danish soldiers, and he gets his coffee. That's my mother right there.

My grandfather told me a story from when he was 12. He was out playing with his friends in the morning when they saw all the soldiers riding bikes. They thought it was a lot of cyclist just riding in the morning. So they started talking to them. Then one soldier pulled out a machine gun and said "be quiet the germans are coming" but it didnt seem to bother them. They Played threw the whole invasion xD

It may look ridiculous today, but bicycle troops back then was actually very cost effective infantry mobility, much cheaper than the horses of World War one, which might bolt as soon as they start shooting. Japan took large parts of China and South East Asia on bicycles. The British expected the Japanese to invade Singapore from the Sea, so all their big guns were aimed seawards. And the Japanese just pedalled up on their arse and took the city.

The Swiss Army kept bicycle units until the turn of this century. I think the Finns still do. Fast movement on roads, no logistics required, silent, and soldier are able to carry weight other than on their shoulders. It makes all the sense in the world.

for all those people putting down Denmark for "barely fighting" and all that...recall that the Danish Army-the entire army-was barely larger than a single German Division, and their total Air Force totaled some 25 planes. That they resisted at ALL is a sign of courage. The Danish government decided that, to avoid bloodshed in a battle they knew the Danes would lose in the end, not to mention that the German takeover was so quick Denmark didn't even have time of officially declare war, that it would be better to surrender. And In any case, there was resistance to the occupation, and it's worth noting that out of all the occupied countries only Denmark, from King Christian X on down, made an almost national effort to protect its Jews and see them to safety.

Danish government send them out for slauther. They refused the army to prepare for war. Danish government actually dismissed 35.000 danish troops before the invasion. Hitler invaded with 40.000 troops. Denmark had some 7000 left. Makes you wonder.

People need to consider a few things, before they put Denmark down for their efforts. For example in 1940 the size of the entire Danish population was 3.8 million. The German population size in 1939 was 87.3 million.

Meh.

This movie proves how crap they are most hollywood productions as far as WW2 is concerned, I love that in the movies they show that it's not all about winning or killing 500 "Nazis" as if it were a rambo. NO, this movie demonstrates the fear of war, a group of soldiers who do their best not to die and try to fulfill their duty with what little they have, damn, they only had bicycles !!. That's why this movie will always be on my list of recommended, as it reminds me a lot of good movies like Full Metal Jacket, Stalingrad, Remagen Bridge, A Bridge Too Far, etc. Movies that are worth, just for the simple fact of not being propaganda. Sorry if i had a bad english.

You need to understand that mainland Denmark (not including Greenland and the Faroe Islands) is tiny small and flat as a pancake ... also, Denmark had signed a deal to get tanks from England, but was attacked before they arrived ... so no tanks, no armored cars, and only a tiny small WW1 like air defense ... the only real highly reliable modern weapons were the Madsen machine gun (which then later was also used in the war by the Germans themselves). .. Still, 203 dead or wounded Germans plus 12 armored cars and 4 tanks (according to the only known official army report) and 16 killed and 21 wounded Danish soldiers and police border patrol, all listed by name and rank, unlike the German casualties, that were all suppose to be kept secret for propaganda reasons.

Danish government refused to begin preparations for war when asked by the military and instead they send home 35.000 troops. The remaining troops were send out like cattle for slaugther as an symbollic act to let the international community know that Denmark was not allied with Germany. When Danish government surrendered they forgot to tell the troops of southern jutland who fought on for the rest of the day.

Well with a minimal army, very little in the way of heavy weapons, the entire country well within range of dozens of german airfields, and very little in the way of geography to aid in defense, you can't really do that much unless you really really want to see your country turned completely to ashes and are willing to accept a civilian casualty rate well above 20% of the population, and still only have the slimmest of chances of winning.

@vrenak

True that there was not increased defense spending, But the thought was certainly not that the govt. didn't think it be needed, it was a combination of the defeat in 1864 still present in politics (it was until quite recently actually), the crisis of the 30's had taken resources to developing the social system and providing civilian jobs for the masses. And a policy of not provoking the germans by expanding the armed forces. denmark sits in a precarious position north of Germany, and does and did a lot of it's trade with Germany, The British though friendly and another vital trding partner for DK was across the sea and could not be expected to come to DK's defense in time, regardless of how much was invested in the armed forces.

I must say I find all these arguments about danish millitary accomplishments and capabillities interesting considering the fact we haven't been a millitary power since the 1800's...I mean honestly comparing Denmark to Turkey? Of course the Turks are more millitarily active than us they are on the front lines all the time. Of course millitary doesn't make a country not alone anyways that aside though interesting to see all the debate about our shitty little backwater XD

Bahahahaha, the Turks are too scared to even lay a finger on ISIS let alone provide any sort of Military action in the Afghanistan campaign, yet again it was us (I'm British) and the Americans who have to step up, yet the Turks would rather fight their own people the Kurds which they would also rather fight than ISIS.. even tho the Kurds themselves are more westernised (and more civilised) they were very lucky with that Russian fighter jet they shot down, One country you really don't want a war with is Russia.

As a Dane, we owe United Kingdom so much, and so does Europe by the way - when knowing the UK lead by Churchil, was pretty much alone (in early 1940's) to take the lead and resist against the Nazi occupations of European countries. What mindset really believes that you should fight till your death, just because it is, what? Heroic? Valiant? That is just wrong. I do not know where you have been living in your past, but maybe you should start taking value in yourself and others and actually enjoy your life instead of wanting to end it because of some stupid thought about being a hero. This is not a movie we live in you know.

Poland fell in six weeks. And lost upwards of 20% of its pre-1939 population after six years, a third of them Jews. Denmark lost 0.16% of its population by succumbing to being a "model protectorate", and less than 1% of their Jews perished. I do not know what the lesson is from that.

How can you say this? I don't care how many your country lost. But Denmark lost 16 people in that fight. They died! How can you say that the danes are cowards, just because we didn't lost a thousand men? The danes had already been in a horrible war with many lost men (1864). The government tried to protect their country... And that is what you call cowardness?

***** I don't think many Danes wanted to fight. How can you explain SS Wiking otherwise? It didn't really matter to you who won anyway. I am from Turkey.During WW1 In Gallipoli we have lost 250.000 men at the same time in the north eastern front 90.000 frozen to death. Around 200.000 in the middle eastern front. From 1912 to 1922 we have lost over 2 million and shrunk from 5 million square km to 700.000 square km Also in the last 30 years we have lost over 40.000 people at the war against terror. How many movies does it make for you?

+Dalton And do you believe in WW1 newspapers? In WW1 newspapers Wilhelm II reported dead and resurected 8 times in a row. All those newspapers and literature was allied propaganda. Winston Churchill lost launched the greatest navy invasion in the history has ever seen until that time in Gallipoli. We have fought nothing in our hands against the largest invasion fleet at the time and have won. Have you ever seen 500.000 troops rushing to invade your country with the highest tech dreadnoughts at the time? Danes has seen more wars than us? I believe you include bar fights as well because we have been conquering and building empires for the last 2.000 years and this is the smallest and weakest we have ever been. We are nomadic hunters you are settled gatherers My friend I acknoweldge the greatness of your country and culture in every aspect but your fighting skills

+Dalton Don't get me wrong I am not trying to insult Denmark. I am just saying that you don't need to appear something you are not. Scandinavians today have built countries so advanced that every other people could only dream of. Not Scandinavia but I have been to Netherlands twice and each time I said even after 1.000 years we wil never be as mentally advanced as these people. I assume Denmark is much better I respect your capabilities already but war is not your speciality. I have been a soldier and trust me it is not something you can easily get back from it unless you are mentally prepared by your culture
