As a Belgian, I also want to recommend "vol au vent" aka "koninginnehapje", which is available in every restaurant (in most restaurants, you find it next to the "stoofvlees" stew you mentioned). Chicken, meatballs and mushrooms in a white gravy with a puff pastry biscuit, preferably served with Belgian fries.

Agree with your choices! Another excellent Belgian dish is waterzooi, a creamy stew with vegetables and either chicken or fish. Especially welcome if you are there in cooler months. Yummy.

little secret when it comes to the belgian beef stew, to get the sauce to bind, we usually take one piece of bread, spread some mustard on it and put it in the stew to thicken the sauce.

In Brussels, you should take your frites on the other side of the bourse building in patatak, beter than the other side. And they have homemade fikadel and saus ( like mango basilic or apple curry)

I’m with you. The Liege waffles plain are the best. We did a Noweigian Fjords cruise then 5 days in Belgium. We went because my father in law helped liberate Belgium in WWII. I wish we had more time. We stayed in Brussels and took the train to Bruges and Ghent. I dragged my friend, who is a big Bruce Springsteen fan, with us. Not only was she amazed with Belgium, but we sat down at a cafe’ in Grand Place and three members of the E Street Band were at the next table. Bonus!

The city of Liège, Lüttich in German or Luik in Flemish, is in my opinion THE waffle 🧇 city par excellence! According to what I've been able to gather, the French speaking Belgians invented what Anglosaxons now call "French fries", albeit potatoes come originally from the Highlands of Peru and Bolivia! A classic fast food dish in Belgium is "moules frites", that's in white wine and herbs slightly boiled mussels with delicious fries. Cheers from Rioja in Spain 🙋🏽🍾🥂!

Nik & Allie, My lady and I are retired from our careers, and are now amateur epicurean travelers, and would like to check out those restaurants recommendations. I follow your adventures, and will buy the merino wool. Frankly, I'd heard of marino wool, but wasn't aware of its travel advantages. Thanks, and, yes, i will buy through your channel. 👍👍

You did a decent job but for the audience that wants a bit more authentic besides the stereotypes: Go to Ghent or Antwerp. The Antwerp train station is something else and in its present state a huge combination of modern engineering (The 5 floors of train tracks ) and historical elements dating back to the beginnings of Belgium. They call it the Train Cathedral for a reason! There is the old zoo just next to the station and you can explore the Keizerslei and Meir walking up to the river Scheldt. Try to find the old narrow Vlaeykensgang at the Suikerrui or see the old Voetgangerstunnel crossing the Scheldt on foot or bike. 30ties engineering escalators.. worth the walk to see it! About food: Try something different! Stewed rabbit in brown beer or eel in a herby green sauce! Or Belgian white endives rolled in ham and covered in a cheesy sauce in the oven. For dessert I always recommend an icecream coupe Dame Blanche. In Belgium this will be made with real melted Belgian chocolate. (If you do not eat it in an Italian or chinese or any foreign restaurant 😜

We loved Ghent so much. Based ourselves there for just under a week. On our way from Ghent to Leiden in the Netherlands had a short stop in Antwerp and you are so right. The train station was GORGEOUS and our daughter loved the zoo. Though small, we enjoyed it more than many zoos we've been to. Thanks for your feedback!

Not anymore Ghent is a paradise for veggie lovers. Since, proportionally, our city has more vegan and vegetarian restaurants than say Paris or London, we can call ourselves the veggie capital of Europe.

4:20 That is NOT the way mussels are served ! As you said it they are served in a big pot. "Natuur" with herbs and vegetables only, or with white wine and a few other choices. Beer is less common.
