9 Benefits of Leaving Your Religion
Hemant Mehta (www.friendlyatheist.com, / hemant , / friendlyatheist )

...
When I was younger and I realized that my religious beliefs were probably wrong, I still hesitated for a while before admitting to myself I was an atheist. I remember falling asleep one night without praying, kind of scared, waking up and realizing nothing was wrong with me. No scars.
I am so glad now that I left my faith. I don't believe my parent's religion was oppressive or as dogmatic as other religions are today, but becoming an atheist really made things better for me.
My friend Neil actually wrote a great article about the benefits of leaving faith -- in his case, Christianity -- and you can read it here. He gave me permission to talk about some of his ideas in this video -- as my Facebook followers offered additional ideas, too.
So what are the benefits of leaving your faith?
1) There's no conflict anymore.
I don't think it's possible to reconcile science and religion. When those two go head-to-head, science always wins. No scientific theory has ever been replaced by a religious belief.
But think about the conflicts religious people have to deal with:
Do you believe what's written in Genesis or all the evidence in support of the Big Bang and evolution?
2) You can embrace science instead of fearing it
So many religions have their own creation myths, and many of those directly contradict what scientists have learned over the past few centuries.
3) You can accept people you used to judge harshly
Various religions teach that homosexuality is a sin. Or that LGBT people are somehow deviant or broken. Or that single people aren't whole. Or that couples who choose not to have children haven't fulfilled their purpose.
4) You can give credit where it's due
When a doctor saves the life of a patient, or an actor wins an award, or a football player scores a touchdown, how often do we hear them give thanks to God? God didn't do that! You did! You worked hard. You put in all the hours. You're the one who made the sacrifices. You deserve a pat on the back.
When you're an atheist, you can give the credit where it's due -- to the experts, to the people who worked hard, and to yourself, when it's appropriate.
5) You get your Sunday mornings back
This isn't a joke. For people who work on weekdays and only have a couple days to unwind, getting some time to sleep in, or go out for breakfast, or enjoy a hobby you really love is incredible! It makes you less stressed out and healthier, too.
For so many people, going to church is a chore. They do it because they feel obligated to, not because they really want to be there.
It turns out there are much better ways to spend your time. Go volunteer. Go spend more time with your family. Go read a book.
Congratulations -- you just found several more hours in your day.
6) Better sex
It's true. You don't have to feel guilty all the time if you're not married. You don't have to be afraid of exploring your fantasies even if you are.
You don't have to feel guilty about using birth control. Or getting tested. Or having multiple partners if that's what you want.
When you're an atheist, you're in control. You get to decide what you do. God doesn't tell you when and how and with whom you have sex.
7) More realistic expectations about life and death
I think it's an important realization that there's no afterlife awaiting you. There's only this life. That means you better make the most of it.
8) It makes you more moral
I'm not saying atheists are always good or religious people are always bad. We know that's not that case.
9) You get richer
No, really, you're not giving a tithe out of obligation. That's a lot of extra money you might have over the course of a year. I hope you put it to good use. Give it to a worthwhile charity, or just buy yourself something nice. You deserve it.

I fucking hate it when people thank God for saving a patient instead of the doctor (sometimes the doctor accepts these things, which makes the doctor an idiot), but if the doctor fails to save the patient they blame the doctor. I would get extremely insulted if I were to save someone's life and then be told that some unproven supernatural being saved the guy's life.

Two benefits I've experienced: 1. I am considerably less self-loathing. Christianity/Catholicism teaches us that we're filthy and can never be good enough unless we submit to the lord. 2. Instead of praying for help for a mental illness, I went out and got real help from a doctor.

Number 4 is my favorite. I personally can't stand when a doctor saves a life and people thank god. Or they even go as far as to say that God put himself into the hands of the doctor so he could save the life. No. It's the people who spent many years learning how to save the person. The people who spend every waking hour dedicated to saving lives. They're the ones who should be thanked and praised. When you thank god, it's makes the work the doctor did seem unimportant. When my daughter got sick, I thanked the nurses who worked around the clock to make her better. They're the real heroes.

Another benefit is the ability to treat situations more rationally, religious people can literally believe anything but as an atheist I always think about other solutions and answers to questions that have nothing to do with fantasy. Also, you feel more sane than everyone else, after all it is crazy to believe things without any reason except that you want to.
@ericvoas9017

Rational thought is a definitive trait of man and is very necessary. However, the accusation that Christianity is fantasy is quite subjective and somewhat offensive to believers. This offensive behavior is contradictory to human reason though considering that human biology considers altruism to be a high priority.

I just became an atheist a few days ago, but I had been slowly letting go of all the basic tenants of Christianity for years. Accepting that I no longer truly believed any of it really lifted a weight off my shoulders. I do like to imagine that there’s an afterlife but the afterlife described in the Bible has caused me doubts since my early childhood. Seriously. I don’t like going to church usually. Why would I want to spend my entire existence after death in a state of praise? And once I learned that our personalities are explained by chemicals and the makeup of our brains, I just couldn’t imagine how we could take our thoughts and feelings with us to heaven.

@@antonionacionreluya8707Because those who go to Heaven choose to do so, and those who go also choose to be in a state of constant worship to the LORD our God. Ultimately if you want to go to Heaven you will have to deny yourself. We must reorientate our will to be God’s will, we must ultimately sacrifice ourselves for God to get to Heaven. The reason those in Heaven want to worship is because they captured their hearts for Christ, they submitted to him, they gave themselves over to him, and it is through their faith that their heart’s desire was made in Christ. Your critique “Why would I want to go to Heaven when I don’t want to worship?” is answered by “Why does what you want matter?” In the end what you want really doesn’t matter, ultimately you can choose to obey the all knowing LORD our God, or you can rebel against him.

craqqer Hey, man. I have noticed a few of your comments lately, especially the one about a good God sending people to Hell for not believing in Jesus. I would like to point that sending people to Hell doesn't conflict with God's image of love. He sends us to Hell because we deserve it. He is so Holy that when we sin we can't be with Him anymore. In fact, we are cursed with sin because of Adam's sin. God is perfect and therefor must punish sin. He doesn't like sending people to Hell, that is why he sent his only Son to be slaughtered in our place. Is that not love? How much do you have to love someone to send your son to die for them? Now, when we believe in this sacrifice and accept it, we can be with God. I hope I cleared this up a little for you, but if not you can email me at andrew.sze@usa.com. You are just confused when it comes to Christian doctrine. Yours for the sake of Explanation, A.B.S.

Andrew Szewczyk Why is Hell the only alternative? This isn't right at all. Two options, either be with God or burn and suffer forever and ever. Torturing someone forever because they didn't believe in you just doesn't seem right. What if you were born in a Muslim country? You would be raised a Muslim and therefore you are automatically going to Hell just because you were born in the wrong place.

What I left behind was a set of irrational beliefs inherited from my mother rather than a full blown religion, but the biggest benefits for me have been things like focusing on the journey and the experience of life rather than the destination. Accepting that my life is irrelevant and insignificant to everything and everyone except myself and those around me was liberating. I can live as I see fit and be accountable only to myself as long as my life decisions don't negatively impact others. Atheism is freeing, it puts both the decision making and the responsibility for those decisions in your own hands. And that caters to me, but I believe it is also exactly what scares many religious people away from the idea of Atheism.

Growing up as a Christian and being raised in a christian household, I can certainly related to #5. Back when I was younger, my parents were involved in the worship team. Which meant going to practice on Thursday evenings and getting up at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning for sound check. It was at point in my life that I thought everyone in the entire world was a christian and went to church on Sunday. How very wrong I was. But then I saw other people not going to church on Sunday. They just got to enjoy their day. And here I was continuing to get up at 6am for my parents sound check at church. I got jealous. Jealous that I was unable to enjoy the day like everyone was able to. While everyone else got to do whatever they wanted, we had to get up at 6am to do our sunday ritual to go worship God.

I remember when i was a little boy, I watched a show about big bang and beginning of the universe by Stephen Hawking, in that show he explained why there was no need for God to exist for creation and i was shocked by his explanation. i live in India and at the time i was in 6th grade. At that time i had a lot of respect for Mr. Hawkings but at the same time i felt he was wrong, but i couldn't find a flaw in his argument either. later i came to realise that the best way to check the validity of any claim is to test it scientifically. The idea is so simple but truly amazing. From that moment on i started to doubt my beliefs and i came to know a lot of contradictions in my belief. As i grew up ( 5-6 years later) I started to watch videos on religious debates. soon i started to shift towards Atheism and now i am a convinced Atheist. Thanks to the KZbinrs and scientists i am now a proud atheist. It may seem unfruitful to argue about religion because it may seem that religious will never change, but that is not true. most people like me are very rational beings but we were brainwashed into thinking one way, but given a proper guidance and information people can definitely change their beliefs.

I was raised Christian (Methodist), but I became less interested in religion when I was like six. I used to pray before bed and meals, but my family stopped doing that eventually. They also let me wear normal clothes to church instead of having to dress up. I remember I would feel sick for a while, and I would occasionally pray if I could get better. Not a single prayer helped, and I continued to feel sick often. I soon learned that it was because I was stressed. This was likely due to school and had nothing to do with religion. I still claimed to be Christian up until the summer of 2016. I went to a church conference in Alabama, and I hated it. I may have actually still claimed to be a Christian afterwards, but I know that I was completely atheist by the time I was in eighth grade. I went to a different church conference that my fundamentalist mom forced me to go to. At first I enjoyed it as many of the activities were secular. I remember getting into an argument with my older brother (who is very religious) during that conference over a miracle. To this day, I am atheist and have no reason to be religious ever again. My parents still make me go to church unfortunately.

Like Hemant, It was like the hardest thing to do to not pray before sleeping for the first time. I'm an ex catholic and I would never miss a night without praying, but had to stop doing it anyway coz I realize how tricked I was all along because of this scam called religion. Since then I never had stupid dreams about ghosts, demons, fictional monsters cause of figuring out how improbable they are (they were just all in the fckin mind all along). Damn never felt so free in my life ever since, felt so good I've figured it out myself. No more thought possesions from an imaginary Patriarch in the sky. Science and the Internet had much more sense than these self contradicting, man made ancient, for-the-gullible religions.

it took me a while... when i was young i even tried applying an idea of the multiverse to christianity so that everybodies souls could be tested fairly. People dont understand that you really tried to believe. The idea of heaven was so soothing especially for when dealing with death but the more fact searching i did the more of a scam the whole thing looked... I dont know where the saying comes from but if you want to make an athiest tell them to read the bible. Also being more philosophical when getting older makes you realize its not the destination its the journey and its also not the action but the motivator or drive which makes the person. religion is so so restrictive for personal growth

It resolves the problem of evil. There's no "loving" God mysteriously allowing terrible pain, suffering, and loss while ignoring your pleas for help. Realizing there is no god that could help, we can better deal with tragedy on an emotional level and can be more clear-minded about how to make the situation better.

I agree with all of these that you mentioned and I had been feeling this way for a while. It’s been a struggle to leave this all behind though because I still really hold close to God in my heart and it’s hard for me to believe that life wasn’t created by God. I’ve studied the Bible and I’ve seen some great wisdom but also a lot of atrocities someone told me the other day that the Bible tells the story of God protecting the “seed” so that Christ could come to the earth and save humanity. It made sense to me but when I sat down and thought about it I was like “why did he have to do it that way?” Killing off people groups is genocide and how can a loving God do that just because they don’t believe in him and they’re hindering the growth of the people who do... there’s a lot to think about. They also said to me how Jesus didn’t come to start a new religion but to just bring people back into a relationship with God. A lot of what Jesus said defies religion. His own people killed him if that says anything.... but people do twist and turn things so much and cause a lot of turmoil. I would feel a lot better if I left the faith but there’s still like this odd pressure feeling I get in my heart that makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong

+ViralVelocity read the bible esp. OT. it'll help you leave your faith as i am. And think of this, what kind of father would sacrifice his son/self to himself to save people from his own rage. I was a christian but i really didnt read the bible at that time. But when i gave time to really read it, it opened my mind and then i started thinking and asking questions. i realized you don't need the bible to be moral.

+ViralVelocity On the flip side, you could read the writings of prominent religious thinkers who started off as atheists. Or you could read the people who have struggled with the Dark Night of the Soul and learn how they dealt with the issues of doubt, and what brought them back into the faith. Whatever you're feeling, you aren't alone, even in your own faith community.

I am sure if there is any god, he would be better than to hate the people who actually think critically with their brains and follow what makes sense rather than following mindlessly. I doubt however, that a god/gods exist.

4:00 This was a big win for me when I was a child. My mother didn't believe in God. She would mention him as a threat to keep us in line when she had to go to work and leave us alone. But I could tell she didn't really believe because she never went to church. Her sister, however, did and, when we went to stay at my aunt's house, we were dragged out of bed every Sunday morning. Groggy, listless, tired and filled with silent resentment at this treatment, I was in no mood to listen to God's word. I could never hear the pastor anyway. His voice was an indistinct mumble and I merely stood when the others did, sat when they sat and warbled off key through the various songs without understanding a word of it. Finally, I put my foot down and simply refused to get dressed come Sunday morning. Like Homer Simpson during his brief period of religious rebellion, I stayed indoors in my night clothes and gloried in the extra sleep. Shortly after that, my siblings followed my example and we all stopped going to church. Sweet.

Honestly, you should also do a video sharing the drawbacks of leaving your religion. I like the positive approach, but some people need to be aware that, just like anything else, there's a yin to the yang. And if people are thinking about leaving their belief, they should be aware of some of the obstacles they may face because of it instead of thinking its all peaches and cream.

For me becoming an atheist was part of an emotional turmoil and realizing that the blood of jewish men doesn’t save you from mental health concerns and in the rational reassurance that following my passions ( in my case mathematics, PreCalculus) will always fullfill me intellectually and that my beliefs will always be correct with reality. Unlike Mormons and Christians who believe in superstitious fairy tale books full of contradictions and lies from guillable mentally ill cultures without empiric evidence, fail to see how their believe in a non existent God is nothing more than a delusion that is harming their own critical thinking and society in general.

But that doesn’t matter because these same people do their very best efforts to make these magical stories a part of their own egos. That’s why when believers are challenged on the validation of their beliefs they always react with a maddening irrational response.

I have a friend who is not part of any organized religion but still considers herself spiritual. I forget how the conversation began, but she knows I am an atheist. Our talk meandered into the afterlife which I don't believe exists. She said "I hope you are right when you die." To which I replied, "I will sleep just fine at night". I went on to talk about how religion expects people to be perfect rather than the best people they can be. They lose sleep over whether or not they will ever be good enough for heaven. I don't.

@@BeyondSkys09 could all that is bad that surrounds us in the world be mere coincidence and chance or was it the product of some sadistic creator? Most every creation (except humans) die a horrific death at the hands of a predator. Earthquakes have killed millions over the eons. Lightning kills people. The ocean kills people. Gravity kills people. Even flowers can kill. If you're going to rhapsodize about your beneficent god, you should first make sure that he deserves it.

Religion is okay just as long as you don't oppress others because their beliefs are different from yours. I'm a Christian but I never really felt like one. As a child I was always factual and hardly scientific about things. I want proof. I don't stand for blind faith. I'm considering leaving and becoming an atheist when I grow up. It doesn't take a religious person to know that murder, dishonesty, adultery, and theft is wrong. I just want to stay neutral about things. People are conflicting because they believe their religion is right and everyone else is wrong. I just wish everyone could respect each other's beliefs. If you're going to comment and tell me to stay being Christian, don't waste your time please. It's my choice, it's my life. I like religion because of its morals and lessons. But I don't feel like staying here. Thanks for reading.
