Atheism makes both harder, because, despite of releasing us from oppression, it also strips us of things such as hope, meaning, etc. And I say this as an atheist. A sad atheist. edit: I think I meant "repression" when I wrote "oppression", but I'll leave it like that.

This video is the reason my girlfriend and I are dating right now. At 1:47 I heard what he had to say and I quickly paused the video and asked the girl out that I really liked and she said she felt the same way about me. She was hoping I'd ask her out. 2 days after I asked her out a guy at her work asked her out, she smiled and replied "sorry but im already dating". Thank you so much for saving our relationship, she really does mean the world to me. This video changed my life :)

A lack of ultimate purpose does not imply a lack of proximate purpose. Besides, if you just continue existing forever after death, what is the purpose in that? At some point, you'd have accomplished anything that you wanted to. Remember, this is literally eternity. The prospect of ceaseless existence sounds horrifying. Would it be nice if maybe we had a few hundred years to live instead of a few decades? Maybe. But living forever doesn't even appeal to me, I don't know why anyone would even want that.
@K3wlG33k
@K3wlG33k 10 жыл бұрын
Neither do I. Even though, I can understand why one would be inclined to such an idea, initially. However, people can be way too short-sighted that they just overlook the long-term consequences. Just because they only know what _they_ want, they easily ignore the future outcomes of their choices/beliefs.
@prototypeatheist
@prototypeatheist 10 жыл бұрын
K3wlG33k Agreed. Even when I was a Christian, I never bothered to amalgamate all of my knowledge with what I claimed to believe to be true religiously. It never even occurred to me to reconcile the secular with the religious. It isn't surprising that people can believe in things which they haven't fully considered.
@AEL-codeNchill
@AEL-codeNchill 10 жыл бұрын
Because usually we (humans) don't understand the meaning of eternal , we didn't evolve to understand big numbers so when you tell people that have no math background "you're going to live for eternity" they usually think that they're going to live for a long time that's why they buy to religious nonsense.
@TylerDurdentyler2020
@TylerDurdentyler2020 10 жыл бұрын
Can you imagine having to worship a blood thirst killer from the old testament? Religious people say they do not know the mind of god (and their fairy tale book says yes and no and contradicts it self on this matter) and then they say no one knows who enters the heavens or not. On this case, I guess if Bin Laden was considered not guilt, they would be happy to live with him for eternity in heaven.
@prototypeatheist
@prototypeatheist 10 жыл бұрын
Tyler Durden Indeed, most Abrahamic theists will claim that belief in Jesus as the messiah is the only requirement for entry into heaven, and the Bible supports this claim, regardless of how illogical it is that non-belief is the only unforgivable act. But then, oftentimes, when you ask them to defend such a stance, they indeed will claim that they don't know the mind of God and that they are not the judges. Well, in that case, I'm not too worried about being an atheist.

I was raised to believe that we either go to Heaven or Hell, but now I realize there is no afterlife. Heck, one of the only reasons I stayed in the Christian faith long after I became disgruntled with it was because of my unreasonable belief that I would go to Hell for not believing. Damn, that's a good way to keep people in line
@missk1697
@missk1697 2 жыл бұрын
Well, as a nihilistic agonistic, i have to say you can't really "realize" there is no afterlife, since it is not an established fact. Sure, one can say it is most likely based on current knowledge, but not a certainty.

But how is knowing that after you die there is nothing not comforting? As soon as you're dead, there is just nothing, you don't feel anything, you're not aware of anything. It's not like you're deaf & blind all the sudden, floating around in an endless space. There's just... nothing.

Steyn it terrifies me at least. If I had the choice to live forever, I would take it. Because to me, life itself is the ultimate "heaven". You take the good of the mystical "heaven" and the bad of "hell" and you get life. There is nothing in your life that time can't heal. I would be willing to stay until the eventual heat death of the universe.

I'm fucking terrified of death man. Not like panicking and losing control over myself, but when I think about it theoretically and realizing that I'm not going to know what will happen to my family and friends in the future and where will the human race go... Also not knowing where will technology go and how will it affect our lives, what will become of artificial intelligence and all of that sci-fi things. Basically the idea of me not knowing new things and stopping to learn freaks me out, it's pretty selfish but genuinely this is what instinctively jumps to my mind- that I'm not going to be around and that I'm not going to know everything. This is why I like to fantasize about a superphysical computer that will calculate the future (and past) by deterministic principles of the universe, or in a more practical way I'm seriously considering to contribute to the development of a technology that can upload the human mind into a computer (so we'll be immortal).

Becasue to me, they talk more sense and THINK about things, religion, no thinking its there, you dont think for yourself you think by a book written by people 2000 years ago, so enjoy life, dont live it by any standards but your own, THEN you'll find happiness :) whatever happens, happens, no use worrying about it now because you should enjoy life while you still got it.

I'm even fine with being in a comma in a preserving machine for 2000 years, as long as I wake up. When I'll die of course I won't mind (because I'm... dead), or before I was born. But as soon as I became alive and started making memories, there's no turning back. I'm not afraid of being dead, I'm afraid to stop being alive- to stop collecting new experiences.

Reality is just that, wishful thinking and irrational beliefs will not, and will never change reality. The only thing that changes reality is physically doing something, creating a church? Yes, that changes the world around us... But sitting in it and chanting? That accomplishes nothing when it is directed to what would be your god, the reason: Believing in something simply doesn't change anything. If you want to make a positive change in the world, do it yourself... Don't pray and do nothing... Don't tell others that Death is only the beginning when you don't know, and don't discredit a scientific theory as if it's some third grader's book report, the people who went about to prove this have done more in their lifetime than you ever will sitting and praying. I wish people would see things from the other's perspective, I don't hate religion, I hate religious people who refuse to let others hold their own beliefs or disbeliefs and as the OP said here I think we should mention death as another thing that they refuse let us as atheists accept simply because they can't.

A friend of mine once said to me, "chill out man, stop worrying over nothing! You can only die once!" I see his point and your video reiterates that point also. Another great saying I adhere too is; "worry about the things you can change, not the things you can't change." Life is for the living so grab every opportunity and live it to the fullest! The "Pale Blue Dot" is very poignant in its addressing of 'worrisome' issues. Great video!

They CAN believe in color therapy and Fung Sheui and Christmas, then what I was saying is that a lot of people go around saying that "Atheists don't believe in any such thing" and they (those people) call themselves Skeptics when they are not skeptics, but deniers. My point is that I was agreeing with the OP and adding the conversation. Feel free to give it another read through.

As a Funeral Director who is also an Atheist, I applaud you for this explanation. I often talk about 'legacy '. I think that that's the important part. Even at the funerals of young adults, gone too soon, their legacy is palpable. I can learn an awful lot about a family's dynamic and the kinds of things that really matter to the deceased. The things they will be remembered for. It's a really beautiful and humbling experience.

You should make a video about what to say when someone is in trouble without referencing the supernatural. Phrases to replace the Christian "God bless his/her soul", "He's in a better place" "God is watching over you", etc. Things like that.

I think the phrase ''He's in a better place'' is not very misleading. While ''he'' may not exist per se, his suffering doesn't either, so in a way you could say that the person is relieved of their suffering, in a better place.

Well ***** , I could think of a different array of situations in which one would wish to express empathy without the need of referencing the supernatural. That's the key to my query. Expressing empathy. Our English language is full of colloquialisms and idiomatic expressions that have been influenced by the dogmas. I'm an atheist and I still say things like OMG, and "god no!" or "god forbid me" without hesitation. It's just an integral part of our language now. I'm in a family surrounded by Catholics, and when someone dies, I still struggle to empathize and offer condolences while still avoiding references to religious/supernatural phrases.

Thank you man, you really helped me! I am 14 and I live in a super religious family. I am near getting my confirmation and I just can't handle it anymore. For years now, I have pretended to believe in God, because I was afraid if I didn't- my family would hate me- and so would God. I am now recognizing that I (unlike my family), do not believe in God, and I'm okay with that. I honestly feel like I have to come out of the closet- just to admit that I don't believe in God anymore. You really helped me to recognize my true opinion, and even though you probably won't read this, I want to tell you how thankful I am for you. Atheists are not bad people like my Mom says. When people ask," What is the meaning of life?" I know the answer. It is your choice to choose what the meaning of it is. To make your life wonderful, to make other people's lives wonderful, to care for people whose lives turned in a wrong direction and help them out. But one thing is for certain, every life moves humanity in a way, if it is to learn from a mistake so others don't make it, to make people think, or to make something that boosts humanity to a closer point of a certain goal, they all move humanity in some way.

My cousin died two days before thanksgiving, on my second wedding anniversary. of course I cried because he died young at age 29 but he had a terminal condition that pained him each and everyday. After I cried. I went out and had the best day off my life because I knew if he were around that's what he would have wanted. We had a party after his ceremony to celebrate his life. And when I tell people that it was the most beautiful party I ever went to they look at me like I'm crazy. That celebrating after a funeral isn't something to do. I laugh and just tell them "that's what we do."

I assume he is around 30 and expects to live another 50 years or so, hey, why not cut that to 5? wow! What a motivation! Instead of putting off retirement for another 30 years, you can retire now! And do all those wonderful things for the next 5 years while he is still young! So, is China right? Having just one child is better than having a few? The first child is precious, the next one was well we will keep you, the 3rd a mistake? - kick him out of the house? Life is a Gift - Reincarnation says you get this Gift if you want it - that is the part that he does not understand - God will not force life on us - if you do not want life, that is your choice - you simply cease to exist

I realize that nobody will ever take me seriously due to my name and avatar being Biggie Cheese, but I have to get this out. When I think about death I get scared, nervous, and I shake. I feel a chill down my spine that makes me cold even on a blazing hot day. I fear eternal nothingness, and I don't know why. My mom used to tell me, "Don't be afraid of death, when your dead you'll be too dead to care" I should have listened, but even now when I think back on her telling me this I still don't feel comfort. I don't know why, is it natural to be this afraid of literally nothing. It is so bad that I take medication, I have been taking it for years, it helps a lot, but when I am reminded of death it happens. I get chills, I feel scared, I shake, and sometimes I cry, but that last one is extraordinarily rare. I always envied religious people that don't have doubts, because they are certain that they will live forever with their loved ones. They have the luxury of not seeing our world in it's true form. They don't see all of reality, because they live in fantasy land. A comment on an atheist KZbin channel comes to mind, it said "Believing in god is like believing in unicorns, except unicorns are more realistic.". Nothing but avoiding the topic of death helps me. I have been to therapy, but they only suggested upping my medication, which I have tried. I realize that almost nobody will read this, but I just wanted to get this out. If you read the comment then either reply with your opinions or like it, just so I know that you read ALL of it, thanks! :) Have a great day.

I am absolutely terrified of the idea of life after death, in whatever form. Obviously hell is a horrible idea but to me also reincarnation is. The idea that after I’ll die I’ll start another life without the people I love and that I would have to start over (i.e. I would have to re-educate myself, I would have to find another partner, another job, going through suffering again) is absolutely terrifying and I honestly don’t get how so many people think that life having a definitive end is bad. What bothers me the most is that we actually have some kind of evidence for reincarnation (see Ian Stevenson’s work about children remembering their past lives and their stories actually corresponding to real events)

Things like "I wanna leave the world a better place than I found it" are also meaningless. To find meaning in life, we think of our lives as a narrative- the story of your life. To be meaningful, any story must have a beginning, a middle, and an end. You could easily imagine how a story that had no ending, that just consisted of an eternal sequence of events, would have no meaning. The important thing about death is that it allows each individual life to have meaning.

Death gives life value. When there is a limitless amount of something, it has no value, but when there is a clear limit to something, then it is suddenly of more worth and value. It's like comparing the Mona Lisa to the packaging on an orange juice carton. There is only one, 'true' Mona Lisa painting, and it is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but the packaging gets printed all the time, and is essentially worthless. Eternal life means that every day is a boring dredge because every day has no value, but when you stop and see that life does have an ending, you are much more eager to see life as special because days are numbered.

If a Christian/Muslim were to read that comment, do you think it would convince them? Also, I agree with your "adage". Never-ending existence seems to give as much purpose to life as brevity (both giving none at all). Longevity is ultimately the reason us humans strive. Even Buddhism teaches that everything has an end and nothing is forever. Also, what do you mean by "days are numbered" when speaking of the benefits of finite lifetime?

'Days are numbered' essentially means that the finity of life gives us a reason to treat every day as something to seize and utilise the opportunities you get.

I just want to say, that despite the fact that I accept that my life will end one day and that will be it for my life (after all, I am an atheist), but that fact still scares the shit out of me.

Why do I feel like when people say appreciate what you have and cherish life, it’s hinting that death is a bad thing and that death means you have nothing. I honestly feel like there are things and people I cherish in life, but to me, life is suffering. We may become happy, but we have to go through hell to get there. I feel that I will be at peace when I die and that is why I feel like death isn’t a bad thing, not bc death makes me want to make a bigger effort to live bc of an expiration date
