Ok people..here it goes. I'm on my fourth Corgi (male) his name is Kody. My other 3 Corgis were female. You have to keep in mind Corgis are a HERDING dog! They have energy, they're fast, stubborn, and we have to get past their cuteness for their sake & yours. What do I mean? NO.#1: Recall, Come here Now! With a pleasant voice and their name, & lots of treats & praise. Do not use their name in a negative voice when correcting. Put on collar, attach leash and let them drag the leash around. Fill pockets with treats, pick up leash, call their name, praise them "good boy/girl" , lots of petting . Do this several times a day (start on a weekend when you're home). DO NOT leave leash on unattended. I will emphasize that the "Recall, Come here is the NO. 1 command. Corgis are fast and when focused on a target, they don't hear. I've lost 2 Corgis....one killed by a horse, the other one by a deer she chased and trapped on a ledge. Neither dog would come when called, because I didn't emphasize and train that dog . My male Kody, is very good. Because I took the time to train him. I attached a 18' leash to him, let him run around and I would call him, he responded so quickly, I removed the leash, he follows us around and comes when called. Corgis are very sensitive, take a deep breath before you yell or hit (never hit). I hope this helps.

I owned 2 male Corgi's at the same time, they were a year apart. They both seemed to have a cat like reaction to the command "come". About half the time they would just look at you as if to say "what's my motivation?". They never needed any motivation to put on a show though. Never a dull moment at my house in those days. Enjoy your little guy.

The repetition isn’t negative, it just reduces the value of the word. 😋 Repeating a command multiple times before the behavior occurs teaches the dog that they don’t have to listen immediately, and also does not give them time to think. One of the most common mistakes new owners make!! If you constantly tell your dog to come, they’re not gunna come immediately-they know they don’t have to until the 10th repetition :) I loved this video!! Very informative for adopting a puppy in an apartment

So a little additional info, repeating a word to your dog doesn’t necessarily give the dog a “negative association” with that word. Instead, what happens is the word loses its meaning because it is no longer being connected to an action. It essentially becomes background noise.

The breeder I got my corgi from told me not to use a puppy pad with a corgi bc everything becomes a potty pad , I tried it once when it was really cold for awhile and it was a huge mistake, it took forever to break her of going potty on the bathroom rug, the welcome mat in front of the door etc crate training is fantastic, should always be done from the beginning and tethering her with a leash was a very good training tactic, corgis are notorious for only coming when they want to, don’t be discouraged, they’re a stubborn breed, I give a firm ‘come’ while bending down and pointing on the ground/floor in front of me works, she knows I’m serious

What we were told about repeating words.... He learns he doesnt have to obey when you repeat yourself and don't force the dog to do anything. So "she didn't make me do anything" on the first 5 times she said it so i'll continue to do nothing. We had to same issue w/ "come." If he doesn't listen after two times, show him the treat and get him to come by you. We would not give the treat THAT time, but make him sit, walk away, and "come." Good chance he'll come for the food, then you reward him.

We own a one year old Corgi and a 4 month old Corgi. We had Schipperkes previously. The thing I've found with the breed is that they both poop A LOT! I feed them Hills Science Diet. The vet says this is a good choice and I shouldn't switch. Does anyone else notice their Corgis poop a lot? What brand dog food do you choose?
@erinl90563 жыл бұрын
My dog is a corgi mix and she poops 3X a day. I’ve never had a dog who craps this much. 😱 She’s currently eating Halo dry food, usually fish blends. She gets itchy with poultry so the vet said fish, beef or venison.

Mine used to poop up to 4 times! 2 during the same morning walk and 2 more throughout the day. She’s 1 now and it’s been reduced to 2 in the morning and another in the afternoon. I believe they are poopers! Her vet won’t admit it, but I’ve been scooping them for a year now and my experience tells me all I need to know. Good luck with the next 15 years!

What I miss in this video is the understanding of language difference. What is "come"? What is "no"? If I tell you to come in Japanese or Turkish, there's a pretty big chance that you will not come, because you don't know what the heck I'm saying. You first have to teach the dog your language, by giving them a reason to come to you. Then they will associate the reason to come, with the word come. If there is no reason to come, they will just question why you are making strange noises. So "what is my motivation" is exactly the right question to ask, although your dog probably thinks, here she goes again, with that word I don't understand.

Saying the word multiple times does not create a negative association what it does is it confuses your dog. In the sense that if you said 4 sits before he finally sat down he would think he has to sit only after hearing it 4 times. But when you say a word many times you are just saying it on instinct as in sometimes you would say sit sit sit 5 times sometimes 3 times and the dog would be like what am I supposed to do, how many times will she say that before I am supposed to execute. So always say it once, if they follow great else stop and repeat after a while. Hope that made sense
