Everyone poo-pooed the “old fashioned” idea of having a dining room separate from the kitchen in and knocked down walls to create the open-concept kitchen/entertaining space … only to come back around to make a second kitchen to hide the mess! Guys, that’s why the kitchen was separate from the dining room in the first place 😂😂

Well no it was mostly because of the noise and the smells. You don't make interior thinking ppl won't clean up their crap, you're supposed to do that. This is just rich ppl shenanigans not what 'everyone' is doing

I can't say I'd be interested in having a small, second kitchen. But a massive pantry with open shelves with a secondary freezer and small washer/dryer combo for kitchen towels/washclothes would be amazing. I don't actually need a large kitchen for cooking but I need a lot of storage.

I’ve had a scullery in my last house and won’t add it again despite also having five kids 😊 What I will have is an extra large pantry that stores all our appliances, pantry and house hold supplies. All the shopping getting put away in one location is a huge convenience.

Finally, someone with exactly my thoughts on marble. And bloucé, don't get me started. I actually have a vintage bouclé jacket that I adore and have had forever (found it at Goodwill 20 years ago). It speaks to a quality and timelessness that the modern bouclé peices lack.

I hate marble. Nightmare to live with it, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. It is also a death trap in stairs or entryways, especially if it gets wet. It is great for gravestones tho, lol. Limewash on the other hand, if done correctly and in a house located in an area that fits it, can be absolutely marvelous. Keep it up Viv, love your videos and I always check for your updates :)

Marble shouldn't be used for flooring in a bathroom as it's very slippy when wet. Maybe in countries like Italy where it doesn't rain very often it's fine but no. Not on floors. I also have a thing about real stone such as granite being used in kitchens and bathrooms as a fashion thing. It's taken millions of years for this stuff to be made so should be given a bit more respect. How many people will still have marble, granite or other stones in their homes in the way described above in 20 years time?
@greyscalesx

@@mypointofview1111 it doesn't rain often in Italy ??? Safe to say you've never stepped foot on the old continent lol. Also it's not supposed to rain inside the house where it's used ? Marble is not used as flooring anywhere but places where ppl want to show off money. Meaning modern America and old castles in Europe from nobles or royalty who had servants and vassals. And those strairs and floorings ALWAYS had massive rugs to prevent slipping and usage. It's not done in modern rich ppl of America bc they want to show the marble off and might not think rugs belong in a bathroom? There are special rugs for that. Ceiling to floor marble especially in bathrooms are a death trap

The thing with the hidden kitchen which is mostly done wrong, is the scaling. The "show" kitchen should be much smaller, and really only have coffee machine/kettle, toaster, and perhaps a microwave and small under-counter fridge. An area of countertop for serving meals is the only other thing you need, and that can be quite small. The hidden kitchen is where you do EVERYTHING but make coffee and toast. I've seen it done this way, and it looks much better. There's no excess, and it's considerably cheaper than having two full kitchens.

TV (or any screen in the bedroom for that matter) is considered a big no-no not just in the design world, but also in healthcare (I’m a doctor and planning on getting a PhD in neuroscience focusing on sleep disorders). It is a well documented fact that TVs and phones should be kept away from bed, since the blue light can interfere with your circadian rhythm and severely affect your sleep. In my experience it’s one of the main contributors to sleep irregularities that are constantly on the rise. So please watch your TV in the living room and when you feel sleepy go to bed. Also, I would advise everyone to avoid screens at least one hour before bed (I know, it’s a hard thing to follow, even for me personally). But it should be considered if you’re having sleeping issues.

I agree Iggy but as a subscriber says below tech companies are making blue protection devices. I don't how effective they are, and how much more expensive they are. Personally, I think bedrooms should be device free. I use it for reading the so many excellent books that are available, and then falling asleep.

My husband has Narcolepsy with Cataplexy, and following the no-blue-light-screens for an hour before he takes his nighttime meds and is ready to pass out is a sanctified ritual in our house. We both have paperwhite kindles we use in bed to read before lights out and it has done WONDERS for our health. Huge 🙌high five for sleep science!

I have had problems sleeping since I was a baby. I managed to quit sleeping pills after being hooked for a decade, by introducing a habit of watching (non triggering) tv series in bed, so any time a sleep expert, be they decorated with PhDs or self-proclaimed, tries to tell me this is bad, I zone out. If this is your conviction, you do not understand people and how unique they are. Yes I get it, we use too many screens before bed and the blue light is bad, but so are racing thoughts, so is the anxiety that comes with a life-time of sleeping issues and that flares up the second one puts their head on their pillow. If you can introduce a non-invasive mechanism that alleviates these fears, go for it. Do not listen to people who tell you it's bad for you because studies show that 'bla bla'. You are an individual, for you as an individual, watching TV may well be an option, even if it may not be the best option for most people. It's an option for some. If you're attuned to the neurodivergent community, you will find that this population subgroup especially, responds well to using TV as a sleep aide. It has transformed my sleep. Also, I have considered switching to reading novels but I find this too engaging. You cannot zone out of a book. Again, if you find reading more relaxing, or if you can learn to find it so, get rid of the screen. But if you don't. It's okay. Whatever gets you through the night (without harm).

I had a chuckle at the scullery kitchen😂. I’m Italian and we called that kitchen the summer kitchen and it was usually in the basement with quick access to the back yard, and next to the room where my dad and grandfather and uncles made the “Guinea red” and the grappa! I think it was the Italian man’s way keeping the wives, aunts and Nona’s cool while she slaved in the kitchen in the summer months.

I thought the scullery kitchen looked wasteful and excessive, but finding dedicated space for certain things can be nice. If you have someone making coffee or toasting bagels every day, then having a place where all of that lives could be convenient. My house doesn't have a massive walk-in pantry like that, but we do have one of those makeshift phone/office areas (just counterspace, really) at the end of the kitchen. That has become the drink station. The coffee maker, coffee mugs, wine glasses, wine racks, corkscrews, coffees, and teas all live in that one spot. Shoving something like that into a pantry wouldn't be all bad, but I'd think ergonomics would become an issue. That second big room may look nice, but it would become a pain in the @$$ due to things due to things being stored in two rooms. I want to make a toasted sandwich or something. Bread and the toaster are in the Downton Abbey kitchen. Hey, use that awesome deli cheese! It's in the main fridge! Oh, and put potato chips or some nonsense on it. Those are in the pantry. Use the fresh tomatoes! They're on the counter in the main kitchen! Use a paper plate. Those are in the servant kitchen. Crap, we're out of plastic knives to spread the condiments! Walk 30 km back out to the silverware drawer in the main kitchen and get a knife! I'd like a glass of juice. That's in the main fridge. No, don't use the good glasses. Go into the type of kitchen that doubled as an infirmary for soldiers with musket and bayonet wounds and get one of those plastic cups!

This is exactly what I hate about it too. An area in the kitchen that is used as the drinking station just adds personality, accessibility and warmth into the Kitchen. A little pantry where you can store some items that dont fit in the cabinets is just fine. But just wasting materials as well as whatever else to have something out of sight in a room where it is needed to be easily accessed and meant to be lived in, just makes you a robot to the consuming of nonsens economy

Cleaning nightmare; Lime wash: looks great on outdoor brick and that's all; Marble bathroom: looks cold and slippery, just what you want after getting out of the shower; Hidden pantry: YES!! The hidden pantries you mentioned is fairly common in Asian countries, especially if they have the space. Where I'm from, we call it a "dirty kitchen" or "auxiliary kitchen". It's usually used to do the 'heavy" cooking, as a lot of Asian foods have strong aroma (even with a strong exhaust), and you don't want that extending throughout the house. The "clean kitchen" is the one exposed to the rest of the house, and you would just do lighter cooking and baking here. And you would do the messier stuff in the "dirty kitchen".

First there was that misbegotten kitchen trend that decreed that there should be no visible sign of its being a place in which you cook. Now apparently we have to have a second kitchen where the signs of cooking can be hidden. Cooking between two rooms sounds like a logistical nightmare. If you're a real cook, the functional plan has to be one kitchen with everything in it and easily accessible, even (horrors!) visible.

Hi! Thanks for the video! I must admit that some of the new complex builds have sculleries. (South Africa) Guess it's a thing here. Our kitchen for instance is tiny with no window or kitchen sink.. but the scullery has a window, double sink and dishwasher. There's even a place for our small chest freezer. Our scullery also serves as an entry way from the garage. It's really interesting how different countries do their kitchen design.

In my area a scullery kitchen would be called a canning kitchen. A canning kitchen is a brilliant way of being able to process food for long term storage, whether that's from hunting, slaughter, or garden/orchard harvest. The wonderful functionality of a canning kitchen is that it allows you to preserve your foods while leaving the regular kitchen available for regular meals. Basically, you don't have to spend an hour or two cleaning up in the middle of processing storage before you can make dinner. Having a second kitchen is wonderful for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and family dinners too. A regular kitchen is sufficient for the immediate family. But when having siblings with spouses and children over, the extra space is needed. It's not about keeping the regular kitchen spotless for show. It's about needing more space, etc for more people. BOTH kitchens are used. I guess it comes down to a question of need and culture. I'm sure a single city-slicker bachelor who prefers living in a condo and meeting friends at restaurants wouldn't need a canning kitchen. (But I bet he'd appreciate being able to hide his mess when having a date over😉)
@be5952
@be5952 Жыл бұрын
You make some really good points. I've never thought about the benefits of a second kitchen, apart from what was called a *_"summer kitchen"_* at my grandparents' farm. It was where the milk/cream separator operated and where they cooked in the heat of summer so as to not heat up the house. "Summer kitchens" were also a separate building, just next to the house, further separating smells, heat and noise from the house, I presume.

I wonder how we managed to prepare big meals for the at least 14 people counting three generations family in the pretty small farm kitchen with corner dining space of my grandparents. There was very little furniture with work space and a lot of preparation was done sitting at the table. Also no existing livin room in use. The kitchen was the living room without a couch, sitting at the table the only option to sit. Fridge and freezer standing in other rooms and a small pantry adding on to the kitchen utility. You would probably count that as half kitchen, yet a lot of tasty food was prepared and eaten there and visitors served there as well. It was awesome! Also, my grandmother did the canning when the rest of the family was at work and school. Even with big gardens and lots of fruit trees, it was a very old farm, no excessive canning was done. She also made her own sausages, smoked meat and so on. Even preparing a whole pig for going from home slaughter to in the freezer never took more than a few hours. And the place was constantly cleaned and tidied up, surely three times a day. Nothing was left to stand there. I guess it is like with income. It does not matter how much bigger it grows, people can always use it all up.

I agree with you that it's perfectly fine to have a tv in your bedroom (not the kids' rooms, though). We didn't have a tv in our bedroom until I had surgery and was on bedrest for 12 weeks (SO long). And we've watched movies in bed, especially in the fall/winter so we could cozy up under the blankets and simply click it off when we were done and go directly to sleep - and I love that you can set a timer for it to go off (I've set mine to go off after an hour of inactivity). And boucle - hard pass - too flimsy for daily wear and tear.

I wonder if the hidden kitchen-pantry trend happens maybe because americans like their kitchens and living room in the same space maybe to show off their appliances, whereas europeans for the most part still treat the kitchen more like a service area which is separate from living spaces.. So for those who have their kitchen visible for visitors and guests it makes sense to want to hide any mess... although it would probably be simpler to just do like europeans do and have the kitchen tucked away to begin with XD

The Skullery is so when you have a dinner party, the dirty dishes, and different courses can be staged and out of sight. Keeps the entertaining space tidy. It's not a separate kitchen as there's no stove, etc. Back in the day, it was thought that the stove and sink shouldn't be in the same room so they were separated and it aids the cleanup crew to be out of the way of the cooking crew. It's a great addition to any home if you entertain at all, have holiday parties or dinners, etc. Obvs. if you live alone and never entertain, it's not much of a benefit.

I could see myself really utilizing that extra space in this exact way! Such a good flow of movement! My mom always hosted Thanksgiving and she would have loved to have a back up sink area with all that counter space.

Yet another cool video - I agree with you on everything. The marble: I once worked as a guide in Adolf Loos´s villa from 1932 and he used Italian greyish marble on one wall in the living room - the marble has beautiful pattern by itself and the wall was intentionally left empty except for a large in-built fish tank - it´s was a strong statment I´ll never forget. Such a pity - marble is such a beautiful material, but the way some people (over)use it makes it lose its charm and uniqueness. In this villa, there was the scullery too and that was only to be used by servants (that´s why it was hidden) and sometimes external caterers that brought dishes from outside and needed space to arrange the dishes before they were being served at a big party.

I agree, TV helps falling asleep and a back kitchen Is not very practical when the sink and pantry are not in the same room where you cooks like in my grandmother's old country house. Marble everywhere gives a kind of cemetery look

Historically, genuine limewash, in various formulas, was used to preserve and protect buildings as well as to brighten them and make them easier to clean. It is somewhat antibacterial, anti fungus, etc.

The butler's pantry as a space between the kitchen and the dining room as a place for the dishware and a staging area for serving made more sense to me than a scullery kitchen, but if you want to leave a million appliances (gotta have every gadget) on the counter, doing so in a scullery feels a lot better than in the kitchen.

I would love a large walk in pantry for storage. Would be great to buy bulk etc but find the hidden complete room a gimmick for insta likes. Personally find them ridiculous! Just because you can build something doesn't mean you should 🤣

I love having a dirty kitchen or in your words hidden pantry . When having cleaning services is getting so expensive and a mom and wife who cooks almost everyday , I find the dirty kitchen a life saver ! Not everyday will we have the time and energy too clean post cooking and especially when we are expecting guests and run out of time to clean .I have zillions of reasons to have one and love mine !!! I always thought that was the best upgrade I opted for :-) love ur videos and look forward to watch all of yours .

I don’t mind a large walk-in pantry. If you buy in bulk and always have extra on hand, like me, a pantry is necessary. I also like butler’s pantries; an L-shaped kitchen is my ideal. I love utility-room-like laundry rooms with large, deep sinks. I’d like to avoid a stackable shoved into a tiny space and hidden behind a door if at all possible. I need somewhere to store cleaning supplies, the vacuum, mop, bucket, broom, and to hang clothes to dry. But I’m also a person who wouldn’t hesitate to have a clothesline out back. 😁

TV in the bedroom is the only thing I disagree with. We had one in our room so our kids could watch shows together and we could entertain in the living areas or watch our own movies. It turned out to be such a happy memory for the kids and us. They thought it was so special to get to cozy up in our room. Sometimes we watch shows in there now together many years later for fun like The Gilmore Girls or movies. It is a great memory for us.

The scullery idea can be great if you have the current trend of an open plan kitchen/ living room as it can be stressful trying to keep everywhere tidy especially if there are kids
@CheeseBae

The scullery is basically a reaction to the failures of open kitchen. Open kitchens became popular back in the 80s and 90s when people stopped cooking at home and mostly heated up processed foods. It didn't make sense to have a dining room when all you did was heat TV dinners. Once we started actually cooking again it became clear why we used to hide active kitchens. They're messy!

On the hidden kitchen idea: I heard they are often for the Indian culture to hide the smells of the spices they cook with. Being someone that doesn’t use my main kitchen, I’d prefer a nice butler’s pantry. Loved your no nonsense, get to the point video. This was my first time & I subscribed immediately!

About Butler Pantries I lived in a mansion for a while in the basement and helped with various things upstairs A true Upstairs Downstairs type thing This mansion was designed by well known architect David Adler I recall helping with a couple dinner parties for sort of celebrity guests though I wasn't into celebrities as I didn't really watch tv This was back in the 1980s Even for those sort of big dinners it wasn't that many people The Butler's pantry I think didn't really seem necessary We could have made the salads with poppy seed and raspberry dressing in the regular kitchen That was plenty big enough Mostly the butler pantry seemed a waste of space and a place to hold a lot of clutter though the extra dishwasher was used on those nights

I remember boucle on Coco Channel's classic vintage two piece suits. Yes marble is also a busy pattern that should be used on just one surface and sparingly. I would love a huge pantry but I don't need a hidden second kitchen. When you live with more people and they all want to see something different, you will want to have a TV in the bedroom just for yourself. Trust me I am a 70's baby.
