Disturbing PSAs are so much more effective than the cheesy ones that try to be "hip" for the kiddies. The best way to get a message across is to show just how real and serious the danger of the issue is

people see disturbing PSAs as bad because they scare kids, but its true that they are so much more effective than "hip" ones. "Hip" PSAs make a lot of kids WANT to do such or not take it seriously. As a kid, I was shown something about how you shouldn't let anyone touch your private parts, but it was barely taken seriously by all the kids and I remember me and other kids making fun of the mascot and making fun of or talking about why they would tell us about it. We didn't take seriously or understand what they were telling us. When I was older and found out about sexual abuse, even at around the age of 10, I understood what they meant and started to take it so much more serious, and know that I'm so much older than that, I understand how damaging making the lesson silly and fun really was. I understand you can't explain it that much when a kid is like 6, but... I seriously wish they would have talked more about it when we were older. I haven't asked or looked too far into it, but... I do suspect some things have happened to other kids my age, just based on their current behaviour and conversations from when we were really young.

Blame Moral Guardians for that, who'd prefer that their "precious little angels" don't lose their purity, even in the face of learning how life gets harder. It was never about "Too young, or too old..." These people are just narcissists who wanted to gain sympathy for what are otherwise poor parental choices. That kind of mentality breeds a collective opinion which results in children growing up so numb to reality, that they need to rely on whining for welfare only because they don't want to do anything else with their lives. And they don't even bother looking for a future because they aren't convinced otherwise by anybody. That in and of itself needs it's own PSA...

The PSA with Sally, the one about child abuse, was really moving. It really put you in her shoes and how I'm sure every abused child feels and sees the world. Being controlled by the abuser even when they aren't around and no one able to see it. It's just so heartbreaking. Yeah, these kinds of things are disturbing, but they show reality, and they're not sugar coating what actually happens or can happen. There needs to be more like this these days.

When I was 3 years old, I burned our whole house to the ground, playing with matches and throwing them into the fireplace. I remember once I saw I couldn’t get the flames back out, I ran to my mom’s room and just hid under the covers, scared out of my mind. If it wasn’t for our drug addict neighbor, walking around looking for drugs and kicking our door down, me and my mom probably would’ve died that night. Some great choices here. One that always stuck with me was a PSA about speeding, maybe early 2000s. It started with a little girl’s body all broken and still against a tree. Then it played in reverse as she is dragged into the road and her limbs click back into place and she comes back to life. The voiceover said something like “hit me at 40, and there’s a (something) percent chance I’ll die, hit me at 30 and there’s a (something) percent chance I’ll live”. It was horrible, but very effective.

I remember the police coming around to our school for a talk on internet safety. They played a short video on the dangers of online communication with strangers. A boy and a girl are talking to each other over messenger or something, sending photos to each other, as if to prove they are who they say they are. Flash forward to when they plan to meet each other at a local park, the camera shows a brief clip of the boy and girl looking for each other, quickly replaced by two older, generally creepy looking men, eyeing each other as if they know what the other was doing. The video really stuck with me, mainly because I had expected it to be the run of the mill child meets predator, not predator meets predator

I lost the second cousin to a house fire. He was living with his parents late 20s early thirties. His parents were out of town with the oldest daughter getting treatment for terminal cancer. An electrical short inside the wall caught the house on fire. They don't know if he didn't hear the smoke alarms or what but by the time he realized the house is on fire both stories are fully inflamed. hIs nephew that live next door who was a teenager seen it and ran toward the house. It was his mom that was gone for cancer treatment. He couldn't get through the back door because the fire was to big. He ran to the front door knowing it's always unlocked. When you got to the front door he couldn't get it open it took on his body weight into it. When you finally got it open my second cousin and his uncle was dead at the front door. Died of smoke inhalation with his hand on the door knob. He did CPR on him for about 40 minutes before help got there but there was no chance. We were not home that night as we were camping and my mom comes to camp the next morning and tells us what happened. We pack everything up and go home. And we spend the next 4 months great aunt and uncle digging through the rubble to find anything that was salvageable. 2 months after this their daughter daughter cancer. So how far is all too real for me. I have working smoke detectors CO2 detectors and fire extinguishers in my house. I don't want to have to go through that again and I don't want to have to put anyone through that again. This happened about 17 years ago and I still tear up talking about it.

The one that always stuck in my head was also a seatbelt one. A mother taking her teenage kids to school. Narrator says “like most victims, Julie knew her killer.” She realised she is is being followed by a white van and and keeps checking the RVM. As the van turns off she sighs with relief taking her eyes off the road for a second and then crashed into a parked car. Her son was sitting behind her without his seatbelt on and crushed her to death. 30+ years and it’s always stuck with me.

I remember there would a PSA about the dangers of drink-driving. These people would go into a pub, have a few drinks, then go to the bathroom. Suddenly, a loud tire screech can be heard and a mannequin head on a cable would swing at the bathroom mirror on the other side (it was double-sided) and leave fake blood everywhere. I also remember the infamous one with someone wearing a creepy rabbit costume and another person wearing stockings over his head. This was to show how children see people who are drunk, especially if they are parents since it could lead to abuse and domestic violence.

I haven't watched this video completely yet but there was one anti drunk driving psa that had a kid playing in in his yard and his dad is all happy, then theres a man all drinking /playing football with his mates and he gets into a car....then shows the car coming over onto the kids yard. The kids family comes out in shock and the dad run, weeping hysterically clutching his sons body. I mean damn that one, the kids dont bounce back, and the drunk at a family party who swings the kid around by his hand and slams him into the wall..... those were scary.

We had a drunk-driving psa in my country that I remember quite well. It was in a text message format where like a couple friends are talking, and they're out drinking, and they have to get somewhere by car and one is like "Johhny can drive us there :)" "Wait hasn't Johnny been drinking too?" "Yeah but he drives good even if he drinks" "Oh ok cool :)" Then suddenly you're in a morgue, and there are body bags lined up, with the names of the people in the groupchat. Then the narrator is like "Most victims know the person who will kill them. Do you know your killer?"

PSAs always find their way to children, which I am extremly glad for. TLDR; My dad quit smoking due to a PSA I saw as a kid. My Dad smoked when I was really little, I might have been 3-4 at the time and a PSA came on. It was about smoking, a woman was shown on screen with holes in her cheek and throat, and talked about what smoking did to her using a text to speech. I cried and told my dad I didn't want that to happen to him. My dad started the process of quitting smoking and hasn't touched one in a long time. I am 13 y/o now and I still remember that PSA to this day

After some more questions I found out his “best friend” was a 28yo man that he met in a child/teen Sonic The Hedgehog forum. And yes, the man knew how old he was. Yea. So I called him mom immediately and we shut that down IMMEDIATELY. What does a 28 yo man have in common with a 9yo that he isn’t related to? NOTHING GOOD.

I've been binging so many lists of scary and disturbing PSAs. It's interesting the variety that exist around the world, how they approach specific subjects, and how dark they wish to get. Most often the ones that show the effects or aftermath of the subject--drugs, alcohol, abuse, careless behavior--in their most confronting or visceral form are the ones people remember most. I constantly have some odd safe driving PSA in the back of my mind every time I'm in my car, triple checking everything the best I can for the sake of myself and others, so maybe the scare tactic is an effective tool.

For we must all appear before “the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10) We will be judged for every deed we do whether is be good or bad. This isn’t something to worry about even if our bad deeds out weigh our good. Because none are good before God, all have sinned against Him and cursed His name, but He in His tender loving mercy hath given us His Son as our ransom. When Jesus was dying all of Gods wrath and judgement was poured out onto Him even though He was sinless. He was sacrificed and tortured on our behalf though we are sinful and carnal. Christ payed our sin debt with His perfect sinless blood so we may escape judgment and have everlasting life. But this great gift is only for those who accept it and accept Him ❤️

It would always show dismembered little children with burnt faces, crying in regret, or screaming in pain while their bodies being soaked in their own blood and more extreme gore. I forgot why it's been 'mellowed down' throughout the years. I think parents were complaining that it was too traumatizing, I forgot. I was always too scared to go near things like those anyway, so I was always trying my best to keep myself safe, but still a concerning memory from my childhood I suppose.

Then the wife comes in with a frying pan and starts nailing the turkey dude. Lol

I remember in my elementary school an electrician guest speaker told us about the dangers of electricity. He had this 3D model of an electrical zone like from the PSA. The 3D model was wired and he demonstrated a scenario of a child trying to get their kite back. He pushed a button, the child figurine swiveled, and touched a metal plate. A beam of electricity showed through the figurine and sparked at contact. I remember the sound of it, like really loud pops and crackles.

@@Retroboy-qb4li I think the idea was that the difference might not be obvious, but the whole concept was a bit flawed. The only replicas that came close to fitting the decription of being convertible to live rounds were Brocock revolvers, and maybe some kinds of blank-firer. The orgnisation that sponsored that PSA held the belief anything shaped like a firearm could be made to fire real cartridges.

The one about being safe around pylons/ phone lines is what we performed at our school award ceremony. This play is about around 9 children who are playing with a frisbee near a pylon. Scene 1: The child of whom the frisbee belonged to (Pete) is teasing the main character, Terry, or better known as “Humpty Dumpty”. Pete throws the frisbee and, as planned, it gets stuck in the pylon. In a situation like this you would just leave it but Pete insisted on having the frisbee back. He somehow thought he would get it back from a VERY tall pylon. Additionally, he is scared of heights to the point he says “Only trouble is, I’m scared of heights. Can’t stand them. I get nosebleeds just going to the top of the stairs.” Stubbs (Pete’s best friend who suggested for Pete to get it back himself) and the gang point to terry and Stubbs encourages him to go up. Terry hesitates climbing the pylon and, after a few seconds, Stubbs says,”…Perhaps you ain’t our mate, then. Perhaps you don’t like us at all. That means you’re the type of person who’d sneak on us.” Once Terry agrees to get the frisbee, Sammy (Terry’s best friend who is on both Pete’s and Terry’s side) shouts not to go up there because it is dangerous. Though Sammy has Terry’s best intentions at heart, Kathy, another member of the gang, threatens him and asks him if he wanted to go up there instead of Terry but there is just a pause. As Terry starts to climb the pylon, ‘egged’ on by Pete, the gang starts chanting ‘Humpty Dumpty’ over and over until Sammy shouts up to Terry, “Don’t, Terry. Come down.” Stubbs threatens Sammy saying,”Shurrup, Sammy, unless you wanna go up there after him.” As the noise continues and excited children keep giggling, there is a flicker of lights and Terry hangs dead on the pylon. The members of the gang stare up at Terry’s lifeless body in silence. Note from me/Raine: (Sorry if this was long I was using my script to write this and if you want scene 2, which is longer than this, to be summarised in my words then just say so and if I have time I will. If I don’t it isn’t my fault because I’ve had a pretty busy week and it’s only Monday sooooo) Edit: If you want to read /watch the original story then it is called “The Terrible Fate of Humpty Dumpty”.

22:34 that was pretty high quality for the 70s. The way that Y/N (the character that you view the perspective of whose identity is left ambiguous) gets startled and looks towards a doorway when they first hear the kids cries. The heavy breathing. It all feels very well done, very atmospheric. None of that shock “oh no! Suddenly because they didn’t obey this rule or do this thing they’re dead!” Type of PSA nonsense, this is a good memorable PSA because of how well done it was, not because it suddenly assassinated everyone in a room with its message

The one at the end was a perfect example of a bad PSA. It uses shock and sudden death because “they didn’t follow X rule” or “the didn’t do X thing” and ultimately you have no idea what in gods name is going on without the PSA outright telling you. I didn’t even hear them mentioning the gun crime
